Is your home stuck in the past? Does it look like you're still living in the 90s? If you even had to THINK about your answer to either of these questions, this video is for you. In today's video I cover 5 trendy home decor and furniture items that date you. These home decor and furniture items were all very trendy and popular at one point in time, but they just aren't in anymore! However, just because items aren't popular anymore doesn't mean we want or need to get rid of them, so I also cover some ways to integrate and modernize your existing furniture.
Do you have any of these furniture items? How have you revamped them for 2021? Let me know down below!

If you do really like fake fruit, one thing I did for my mom since she couldn’t let it go, I found blown glass fruit that was more of an artistic focal point for her kitchen. Girl loves her modern glam so it fit so well in a glass bowl and didn’t look cheap or outdated. Just another idea :)

I just bought a recliner for Christmas but it’s pretty modern sleek I love it. I’m going to move it to my bedroom though, it’s just not the vibe I want for my living room. My kitchen is a galley style and over the sink is a wooden trim but with a scalloped country edge . I wanted to just rip it off but I rent. I think now I’m going to cover it with a valance a cute modern black valance. Yeah I’m glad for your comments. You make me really look at my house in a different light.

I didn’t have the money to replace it, so I brought the whole set outside and sanded it down. It looks amazing! The wood underneath is this beautiful wheat color! I couldn’t be happier with it. Listening to you talk about the sleigh bed made me realize that the reason I am having so much difficulty figuring out how to decorate is because 95% of the furniture in our house was hand me downs from someone else. Even the furniture we bought ourselves was second hand and purchased purely for function and not looks. Our house is a mismatch of furniture from different design styles that are not the kind I would choose if I could afford to buy all new furniture.

Maybe, dont throw everything out and I know its tempting to do that. Are there any pieces of the furniture in the house you do like? Had a similar issue, so I kind of replaced pieces when I had the money and slowly the house is beginning to reflect us rather than other peoples tastes, or the outdated tastes I did have. It's taken six years bit by bit but if you know what you do like, then try and build the rooms up slowly. Sometimes you will have to save to get several pieces for one room at once but honestly, I know it sounds silly but my old furniture use to upset me. Anyway you dont have to listen to me but maybe start with smallest room in the house, save for a few bits of furniture, whatever you can afford and swap it out, then sell or junk the old stuff. If its someones precious heirloom and you hate it, give it to someone else in the family.

My parents got me a white sleigh bed in middle school. It has white roses carved into the different pieces for accent, and the bed's headboard has a trellis. I think the set still looks really good, especially because it is a white color with a daintier style. My aunt currently uses it for my grandmother's room, and I think we'll be keeping it in the family. Because of the white color, you can add some bold wall paper or paint without it being too overwhelming. American Signature is such a great brand.

I just found your channel after other interior-design channels. I REALLY appreciate that your advice keeps in mind that everybody has their own unique tastes and you encourage it. You're not saying, "get rid of this thing you might love, it's bad," but instead are offering a variety of possible solutions. It feels respectful to the viewer, shows your creativity, and also is pretty realistic because I think a lot of people have things they love and don't want to be told to get rid of it, but want to just get advice on how to make it fit. I had to pass on the other channels I came across because their design advice was WAY too opinionated and specific to themselves, which at best, comes off as uncreative, and at worst, comes off as pretentious. I don't think design should be rigid in that sense. I think design should be looked at as fluid that everybody can use to say something about who they are as an individual AND be functional to themselves. So good videos!

And there are things that are currently trending that we’ll be (or I am) scratching our heads over. Don’t hate me, but crystals/geodes, pampas grass, faux rustic pottery, beads in bowls, the Tom Ford book, chunky chains as coffee table decor will all be of this era.

Let me just say I found this channel a few weeks ago and I’m obsessed!!! Found the channel just in time getting the keys to my new home today and I’m listening to all the advice of everything you say. I do have a sleigh bed that my daughter will get for the time being however it’s gray and easier to decorate around but I agree that brown on the beds are so outdated!!

I guess a lot of us forgot why we bought the things we did years ago. Following a trend, in expensive or cheap, moving from place to place, little or no design know how, etc. So a look back over the reasons we still have the things from the past is logical not snobbish. And how to update them is beyond thrifty.

Thanks so much for this! We're going to HAVE to buy recliners when we buy, because 2 bad backs already exist and I'm looking at some surgeries too, at least one of which recommends sleeping in a recliner for the first week or so cause lying flat won't work. But we have a nice clean traditional aesthetic (very Arts and Crafts), and working out how to style them so that I have something I'm comfortable with both visually and physically has worried me. I now have a way forward, and even have a particular reclining sofa I like online! Now I just have to go see it and sit on it to be sure. Thanks so very, very much for helping me with this.

Yes, I agree about the recliners. I always found them very anti-social. The person sitting on it always tends to fall asleep, leaving everyone else have to creep around and try to squeeze past.

I grew up thinking a rug was something that cost thousands of dollars. My mom was good at flea markets. Every time she'd get a big rug at an estate sale, she'd have Atiyeh Bros come clean it .They'd usually offer her about a few grand for the ones she'd brought home! That was back in the '70's and '80's.

I have to also shout out re your willingness to compromise, that is, decorating those recliners. I get that they are not easy to work around, some downright ugly, but the fact is that my significant other has a vote and deserves what makes him happy too. If I wanted it my way, no matter what, I'd live alone. Luckily there are more options these days in recliners, but you found some compromises like throws, etc and blending tips. Many thanks!

Sharon, my mother decorated back in the late 60's with olive, gold, and rust and I did not like it at all! When hubby and I remodeled our home in 2006-9, guess what colors I ended up choosing....yep, the dreaded three listed above...lol. Mom had loved the Colonial Style, while I changed from Contemporary to British Colonial. I would have never guessed I'd EVER choose that style, but my husband had won a sales contest at work, the prizes being a very expensive chair and a half, and a gorgeous bed (partial sleigh). I ended up pouring through decorating books, and ended up loving the look. I'm working on refining it slowly but surely...some of it looks rather hodge-podge.

The purpose of valances used to be about hiding ugly traverse rods for pinch-pleat draperies and pinch-pleat sheers or to hide the hardware and ropes for puff draperies. Now that rods are so much nicer, there is no need to hide them. Also, as post WWII houses became mass-produced and the trim around the windows became very plain or rough, it became necessary to hide the trim. I have seen too many windows trimmed out with cheap baseboard wood. As now, it was always a common mistake to hang the hardware and valances too low and block the light or the view. Fortunately, we now have lots of choices of nice looking rods or shades if you want to show off the architectural trim. Just like adding crown molding around the ceiling, investing in upgrading the architectural trim that frames windows may be a better style choice than investing in fabrics and hardware to conceal a plain or rough looking architectural trim. If you upgrade the window trim, remember to also upgrade the trim around doors and cased openings. It's like putting a nice frame around a piece of art. I love all your videos - always thoughtful and practical and classy. Keep telling it like it is! ❤
