Hello, beautiful people! This is all in good fun. Trends are fleeting, but the importance of how your home makes you feel is ever present. This is based off of what I have noticed over time, but nothing is true for everyone and it’s okay to have different opinions 😊. Make your home reflect you! Thanks for watching 💕.

Thank you, beautiful lady. Having a different opinion does not mean a negative judgement of YOUR efforts in making this video, or the people who find benefit in it. It only means there are people who are comfortable and pleased with the home they have created for themselves (such as myself). Sure enjoy your spirit, and pray for much success to you!

I really enjoyed this video and do want to hear your tips. I think it would be incredible if you did more voice overs and showed more examples as you were speaking. It would keep attention but also help us learn what is good scale and what is not. There wasn't a single pic of an appropriate rug size for example. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to share this info!

As a professional in the Drape and window covering field, I will say you do not always want your drape to touch the floor. That's fine for a bedroom or little used area, but in your living space we go for 1/2" off the floor. Otherwise the bottom of the hem picks up dirt, dust and is difficult to clean under.

Ms.Ashley, try Houzz.com, use the search bar to find relevant discussion about your design dilemmas, industry pros often chime in with great advice. Always keep in mind tho, design is self-expression so don't overthink it. Magazine covers are just that, they cover up real life imperfection, so look at pics & watch videos but ultimately YOU CAN do whatever makes you happy, that's what matters. Go with it and don't look back

By breaking the leather sets and putting one or two pieces in each room, you get a cohesive home style where each piece stands and can act as an accent. On the contrary, by placing all together in the living room, ir looks crowded and cheap, and so does the rest of the house. An exception might be white natural leather sofas that can share the room with a second similar piece or a twin. This was your best piece of advice.

I agree that matching sets are a no-no, but having different pieces that are different styles and colours - but still all leather - totally works. I've seen it done and I'm planning to do it myself when I can afford the leather chair I want (I already have the sofa). I hate matching sets of anything, no matter where they're placed (bedroom, kitchen, living room), but design can still include all leather if done intentionally with complementary pieces (and also with other fabrics thrown in for pillows, throws, etc.). Just my two cents.

For those of us who have too short of curtains/draperies, rather than going out to buy new to replace them, think about these tricks of the trade to save yourself some money: (1) Check the width of current hem. There may be enough material to make the curtains/drapes long enough to "kiss" the floor by just letting down the hem and adding either a very skinny hem (hemming tape is my preference) along the bottom of the curtain, or adding plain material to the bottom of the curtain with hemming tape and using that to add "bulk" to the bottom of your new hem. The material will be hidden on the reverse side of the curtain and won't be seen, but I would stick with a lighter neutral color like white or beige. (2) If the panel length is still too short even after you let the hem down as suggested in (1), think about adding a complementary or contrasting color panel at the bottom of your curtain/drape to add the necessary length to "kiss" the floor. Experiment with how deep you would want the band to be and whether you would go with a solid color band from one of the colors picked out of a patterned curtain or, if your panel is one solid color, contrasting it with a patterned but coordinated color additional panel for the hem line. As for the rest, I honestly wouldn't know if you bought something at Ikea or Home Goods or Society Six or wherever and wouldn't care anyway. What I find offensive is trying to PRETEND you're something you not. We're not all decorators, we're not all uber-rich fat cats, we all don't have husbands who make a million or more a year so you can teeter around in 5 inch stilettos all day and get cosmetic surgery every 6 months. And who gives a flying eff anyway how much you paid for your possessions or where you got them from? If you hang around with people who would walk into your house and say oh I see you bought that REALLY CHEAP BED FROM IKEA I'd say EFF OFF - politely, of course - and drop that person from my "friend" list because that person isn't a friend, she or he is just a bitch. Buy what you like and everybody else can go blow.

Loved the video! My own pet peeves are super easy: 1. Fake oriental carpets. If you want a room to look luxurious, buy a hand made wool rug, silk if you can afford it. That’s where wealthy people begin. The fakes are obvious. 2. Fake wood. Nobody is ever fooled, buy honest furniture that isn’t trying to be something it isn’t. PS, this includes the floor! Old real wood furniture is always better than new fake wood furniture. Always. 4. Art prints. Wealthy people have original art on the walls. Frame your kid’s work. Buy something at a student art show. Buy a canvas and make your own version of a painting you love. No fakes! The second the light hits the surface, it’s clear that it’s a print, not a painting. 5. Don’t buy “decor” or “decorator” anything, skip anything mass produced that is found in a department store and made in a country where they don’t pay workers a fair wage - such as Hobby Lobby, and the rest. Finally, I think the Tiny House Community has taught us that it isn’t wise to look down on small homes, they are usually much more expensive per square foot than an ordinary house. “Larger is better” is absolutely an outdated and short sighted mindset, and can lead people to buy houses that are too big, and then they’ve got to somehow furnish the whole thing... which just gets them deeper in debt. It makes much more sense to go for cozy and intimate spaces that lead to deep conversations and connection, then furnish them with a few lovely treasures. I’ve lived in the big house on the golf course, and it was nice but the quality was very low, and the large spaces made me feel isolated and disconnected. I now live in a smart, sexy, small house with handmade rugs, original art, handcrafted furniture, and a Steinway and I LOVE it. In the end we all define wealth differently, so choose what you love in your home, do the work you love, and be with the ones you love - that is true wealth. 💚💜💙

I love oil paintings, landscapes. My home is traditional, we’re seniors. I had an oil painting reproduction made about 15 years ago 24 x 36 and put it in a gorgeous gilt frame. It’s over the fireplace. It’s my pride and joy, the focal point of the room. I’d rather have one good piece of framed art than several inexpensive pieces. I designed the room around that painting. Older folks usually have acquired some expensive furniture pieces, over the years, that can’t be discarded or we just like too much. Your advice is excellent for young people just starting to find their comfort zone.

I have a tobacco-colored leather Chesterfield sofa and I ADORE it. 😍 I’ve paired it with a velvet throw pillow, faux fur throw; in addition: a concrete coffee table, two leather armchairs - different color/store! - with a linen pillow in each, and two gorgeous marble topped chests. 🥰

You can do a smaller rug that you love IF you pair and layer it on another rug but it's challenging. I have seen it done. Also I've seen a smaller rug work when furniture was placed to break up your room and create intimate clusters of furniture.

I'd love to hear her opinion on placing area rugs over carpet. It's a look that makes me cringe (as does layering multiple area rugs), but it seems that many of the designers on KZbin do it.

Great advice. Love the tips on sizing and scaling. As for IKEA, I remember when we maxed out our budget to buy our place here in Paris, all we could afford were a few pieces of IKEA furniture. When a snobbish friend came over the first time, she looked around and said « vous êtes IKEA à mort », i.e. « you’re IKEA unto death. » I’ve never lived it down (nor has she, I always remind her of it!), but it turned me into an inveterate IKEA hacker 😅

I love mirrors! 😂 I'm redoing my apartment with a few curated glam mirror pieces and a sculpture I'm building myself. I know it's not "in" anymore but I'm really into the 80's and want my space to feel like walking back in time, but in a classy way. I've spent a bit of time curating pieces and matching color samples, so hopefully it will look nice!

I recently saw something online about how to camouflage wall mountedTVs. One of the tips I thought was clever is to paint the wall black as a feature wall. You don't notice the big black TV as much an accent wall like that can look very sophisticated if done well.

You should have a look at British interiors guru Abigail Ahern. She breaks a few of your “rules” such as small rugs and over sized lamps. Her spaces are amazing, although not at all minimalistic. She is a self confessed maximalist who uses dark colours and texture. I love her style and my home definitely has some of her influence. I think it is actually about balance and what makes you feel joy but to each their own xxx

I'm a maximalist- and for those of you who are like me, here is my tip that is making your home look cheap: be a maximalist, but have many clear surfaces within your room. For instance, don't cover every tabletop! Make sure you also have places for your eyes to take a rest. Balance! Just like with minimalism... Don't leave everything blank, but instead, make sure there are places where your eye can get lost in the creativity and texture!

I'm a maximalist as well and I agree 100% especially when it comes to walls and wall shelves..buying more and more wall shelves so you can add more decor will end up with cluttered walls that overwhelm a room. Walls need empty spaces. Store and rotate decor out with seasons or change them up periodically.
