I found it very difficult to make patch pockets that are perfectly shaped until I started cutting the pocket finished size out of lightweight cardboard. I use the temples as an ironing aid and pressed the fabric around the cardboard to form pockets that are exactly matched. So rewarding!u

My favorite pants pattern was from the ‘80s or ‘90s. The slack’s waist was formed using folds and folding over the fabric at the waist. It was the perfect way to fit the waist. Either make fold which made pleats deeper or shallower to exactly fit your waist, then fold it over at your exact waist height. No worries about cutting and sewing side seams, waistbands, or having the crotch depth wrong.

The cargo styles look great as well.❤

Pattern matching is easier than it looks. Before I went away to college, I made a plaid wool wardrobe of a cape, beret, jumper, blazer, pants, and a pleated skirt with 27 pieces! For matching pockets, etc, lay the pocket pattern over the pants back piece where the pocket placement is marked then trace the lines on the pattern paper and move it to the new fabric to cut out by putting the lines right over the new fabric lines.
@sosewmad7 ай бұрын
Wow that sounds amazing, thank you for the top tips x

I saw a picture of the tweed run in the paper but, sadly, you weren't on it, Cara. It looked like a great event. Like you and your Esti pants, I've made five pairs of the True Bias Lander pants. I'm wearing my denim pair right now. I've also made the shorts. I have to use the waistband from a different pattern though. The Lander waistband is rectangular and it gapes at the back on me. I use a curved one. Other than that, it's an excellent pattern and fits me really well.
@sosewmad7 ай бұрын
Thank you for looking out for me that’s very kind we had the best day ever. Do you know I need to try the lander pants the pattern that I have, but I’ve never tried but I love the idea of a curved waistband because I think I did have an issue with the waistband on that so thank you for the top tip and it’s lovely to hear from you.

To get back pockets to look perfect, I cut a template out of cardboard then iron the fabric around the template so they match exactly.

I have a Style Arc pattern that I really like. I think it is called Barry or something like that. It is such a simple pattern, tapered legs, shaped pockets and elasticated waist. I have made this various times in linen for the summer and they are ridiculously comfortable. Recently, just for a change, I made the Papercut Palisade trousers. I was a bit worried because the pockets looked amazing but complicated. However, I followed the instructions to the letter and they worked a treat. I am just about to buy some soft pink linen and make them again.

Hi Cara, your enthusiasm shines out of the screen, thanks so much for your vlogs, can I just ask, can you make the tremplin trousers from linen?
@sosewmad7 ай бұрын
I think you could, but with the level of detail in the pockets and pleats this would be lost with the natural crease that linen has, best to choose something that will be a bit more stable
@katep23827 ай бұрын
Great video, thanks very much , very helpful. The Bramber trousers took me through most of the winter in corduroy. It's the zip fly that puts me off anything more complicated, but I think I'm going to have to try!😅

Hi there, it’s lovely to hear from you in the video. I do talk about the different weights of fabric trouser weight fabric anything from 180 to 300 g/m² is really good trouser weight so a linen or a denim or a stretch denim or a cotton twill. These are all great fabrics. Lots of independent fabric shops for example, beyond the pink door fabric, godmother, would be more than happy to help and decide which fabric would be best good luck with your search and trouser making

@sosewmad7 ай бұрын
Thank you, I don’t, I must be lucky, but in all honesty you just don’t know until you try. The Tilly and the buttons patterns and closet core patterns both have excellent fit adjustment advice as does the pattern emporium site too, start with patterns from these companies and take it from there

I enjoyed your video… now I am thinking of making some pants. I was wondering about the fabric you are using for the styles that do not have a fitted waist. I think you mentioned one fabric has a it of stretch. Do most fabrics you use for pants tend to have a bit of spandex in them? If you use a twill, does the twill have spandex?
@sosewmad7 ай бұрын
Hi, twill doesn’t tend to have spandex in it and most trousers don’t have any stretch. But a stretch denim a low percentage stretch in it just gives a little wearing ease which is usually very comfortable
