In the early 70s myself and friends where having issues with a local MC 'club''. One night when only three of us where left, about 12-15 of them burst through the doors of our local bar. About six of them where on me and just the sheer weight of them was bringing me to the floor, thankfully I kept presence of mind and knew I had to protect my vital organs. I wrapped my fingers in the long hair of one of them and pulled his head into my chest as hard as I could to avoid the boots and protect my head. Luckily the guy was huge and he made a good shield. I got out with only 35 stitches to the head from a tire Iron, one small stab wound and several holes in my legs from various 'tools'. It could have much worse but I think my human shield saved me.

As someone who grew up and still lives in a very dangerous neighborhood, having been jumped many times and been in many street fights ...THIS is the most intelligent and realest video for self defense on KZbin. All of these things mentioned are things people with street smarts do as second nature, i even have many tricks myself, i will give you my favorite: as many people in my area carry knives and i often get knocks at the door late at night from random strangers, if i feel i must answer, i answer with my headlamp switched on as any would be attackers will be blinded as i open the door giving me the chance to determine weather or not they are hostile.

Agreed. I carry one of those blindingly bright flashlights. Step 1: you light 'em up right in the face with the flashlight strobe setting -- I guarantee they will be disoriented. Step 2: I also carry grizzly bear repellent which fires in a thick stream for about 15 feet (the ad claimed 30 feet. THIS is why whenever you get any kind of weapon that shoots, especially guns, know its capabilities and limitations. Test it, get comfortable with it, whatever it is. Don't make the first time you use it the first time you HAVE to use it). Anyway, my motto for using these things is "first ya blind 'em, then ya spray 'em." 😉

Great video! As mentioned below “the present of mind” can be a game changer. I was in Nigeria and cornered by 3 guys with machetes. Coming at me saying “you American, you American we don’t like Americans “! Although I hold a 1st degree black belt I knew it wouldn’t help. So I said “I’m not American I’m a Texan and America took over our country” and we are fighting to take it back. Then showed them my tattoo outlining the state of Texas and continued to BS them about it and all of a sudden we were best friends, comrades in our crusade against our governments. I was practicing tae kwon do and I found someone breaking into my car, I snuck up on them and my main tactic was limiting their mobility if a fight broke out. I confronted the person and it was the lady across the street. I didn't hit her but I scared the crap out of her and let her go. May God bless her for showing me my true level of readiness. I learned as a counterintelligence agent in the USMC to constantly watch everyone and everything. To essentially be hyper alert- not freaking yourself out- but just a common assessment of where you re and who is sharing your space. Before I went in to CI- I was a high op-tempo unit and I learned the break stuff and kill people but it wasn't until I went to a CIT that I learned to see things to avoid a situation or to be ready. I am a big guy, in shape I have been in many violent encounters around the world and now as a civilian, I do my very best to ensure my family and I are 2 steps ahead of the situation when possible. If I can avoid violence I will, if I can't I do my best to bring a level of violence they are not prepared for- to their day. You've made so many outstanding points in your videos, I can't cover them all. Suffice to say if people watch one series it should be this- I can't take the weirdos with their over the top instruction, weird overly complicated moves, bravado - The good doctor does this right. This reminds me a lot of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, Krav Maga where it is practical applications not weirdness. Violence is one solution a solution used if you have failed in doing other things properly. Or someone is just an ass and needs a hole stomped through them.

One other thing to be aware of in a street fight is that it is more likely than not that the first punch from your opponent is going to be on YOUR left. Have you ever noticed whrn you see somebody with a black eye in a picture or in real life the black eye is almost ways the left eye? That's because most guys are right handed and most guys will try to win a fight with a one punch knock out. So of course read his overall body language but guard left gentlemen; that's the side where his first punch is probably going to be. (Especially since most guys don't know how to fight physically, and the sucker-punchers are out of ideas if that first punch doesn't work for them.😉).

Love some of the tips. I had an interesting confrontation last week.. a mugger trying to rip backpack open/off. He was dodgey approaching, and wasn't trying to fight. Kept running off and coming back. Was very different from normal fight.. I took him in headlock and managed to wiggle out (though we went to ground) and then he ran off.. and came back again. Reflecting on it, I should have done more damage to the guy (punches, eye poke) to discourage the attacker from returning, rather than wrestling. In end he ran away with pocket ripped off of rucksack which hd 2 pens in it. I saved phone and computer and e reader I had in main part!

Most of your videos address situational awareness first so well - especially the environmental aspects relative to awareness of trap points, etc. Outstanding as usual but the knife weapon defense/take-away segments are perplexing to me. I was an urban American law enforcement officer for 31 years and have been personally involved in deadly encounters. I bounced at a nightclub in college and have what I would describe as a moderate training background in wrestling and traditional self defense techniques involving most of the main MMA skill-sets. But I would never engage with a person armed with a weapon, especially an edged weapon unless I had no alternative and could not escape - that becomes harder with age. At 61 yrs old, I still train hard but mainly for mobility, flexibility, speed and strength because they decrease more with age but are very important in initial avoidance or if forced to fight. The main point is that effective weapon take-a-ways and edged weapon self defense is a HUGE but very perishable skill-set and takes consistent, realistic training just to be "decent" or have the "ability" as you say. Unfortunately the UK has strict gun laws and citizens cannot effectively arm & protect themselves against knives and other deadly weapons. In America, we have a saying that you do not bring a knife to a gun fight. So fortunate to have our 2nd Amendment! Many Americans are armed with a firearm for protection. It takes far less training than developing and maintaining effectiveness at weapon take-a-ways and is an easy skill-set to learn and maintain with age. Unfortunately the UK doesn't allow for that. By far most of our violent, urban gun crime is not committed by lawful gun owners - rather it's committed by felons who are illegally in possession of firearms and not being seriously held accountable.

Earn decent money. Live in a nice neighbourhood. Don't associate with aggressive, ignorant people. Don't go out at night to places where there are bars and clubs. Avoid bad areas. Run away if you can instead of fighting. If you get a bad feeling about a person or place, get out of there. In my experience, I have only had problems with confrontations and violence, on weekend nights in town centres, in bad areas, or when I'm around idiots. I avoid all of that now, and keep myself to myself. Life is peaceful that way. If you're defending yourself physically, often, you need to ask yourself why you're getting into those situations so much. It's not normal.

I never care what people think of me, I always try to get away from a bad situation and tell them whatever they want to hear but my rule is noone talking crazy will ever get within arms reach. I will back up once but if they try to get close enough to hit then it's better to give than receive. I will bury my thumbs in their eyes and don't care if they ever see again because I know I tried to deescalate. I used to love to fight but too old for that stuff and too many people depend on me. That means I can't afford to lose.

Great advice, you nailed it when you have mentioned look at the signs. I would say usually , there are signs before an attack. The intimidation clue is perfect.. The ego is a perfect example, a major play in this would be trying to get a response from you. Glaring Insults Squaring up to you Chest bumping Finger pointing Pushing This is pure provavation to get you to react and fuel their aggression, this will result in them serving their ego if you don't respond, or if they are more intent on getting physical. Fuel their ego for an attack. The question is, when do you decide to attack or ignore and walk away? It maybe interesting to do a show on this if you haven't already done so? Unfortunately, I personally can not run away. Not forgetting, at times, nerves can get the better of you and you may freeze, training helps, but by no means a guarantee.

for me to preempt a violent attack, split seconds before is watch for movement of eyes and shoulders. Very important to gain distance as soon as you see signs.

In my opinion the back against the wall most important your going from a 360 range of danger to a 180 range its saved my life. And moving without showing you see who you attend to attack the easiest hole to open to escape. Cardio Cardio Cardio.

The name of the game is to always know your surroundings. Know your exits know your beginning to know your ends. If I enter a house the first thing I want to know is how to get out of the house in the case of an emergency. There are three different exits you can use number one. The front door in the back door and the side door are considered one possibilities. What is your second possibilities the windows. What is your third and most possibility is get to somewhere where you can feel the most safest and stay there. Think about what I'm saying because you can save your life if you know how to get out of a dangerous situation.

@@fightscience What you said about funnelling was interesting sir, i have noticed i did this when some guys clearly wanted trouble, there is a narrow corridor to the entrance of this bar and i instinctively moved towards it when they attempted to surround me. I have a question though do you think it's ever possible to deal with a group? Thanks.
@fightscience
@fightscience 2 жыл бұрын
@@mashleyred2180 sounds like you did the right thing. To be honest the chances of surviving a group attack are low. That's why you have to increase your mobility while limiting their approach to you. That way you have some chance of dealing with one person at a time while trying to escape safely. Of course running works, but you don't want them to chase and catch you. So delay them as much as possible. Just my humble opinion, having been in this situation many times.

I practice situational awareness. I try and utilize my gifts or areas I'm better at. I also keep a good knife or 2 as well as a firearm, mace, wasp spray, a socket that fits my hand perfectly for a fist pack. I'm not saying I carry all these items together. It's just some of my equalizers. I'm 6,4 and my weight varies from 228 to 248 or so.... most people would/will jump me w multiple attackers because of my size and confidence I carry myself w. I've never been a bully... I've had martial arts and dirty boxing, remedial wrestling, and pretty good submission training. My father was 3rd degree blackbelt, cop, bouncer, and was on the SWAT team. Being able to scan the area to look for weapons or as you said choke/funnel points. Mindset is key. Everything happens fast. Like super fast. Anything to win if your life is in danger. This gentleman's channel is spot on. If anything I become overly viscous that stems from childhood abuse. My cardio is really bad. If your untrained you will forget to breathe and strictly head hunt on your opponent. Thumbs and or fingers in eyes work extremely effective if you are committed to winning bad enough. I'm not trying to sound tough or cool but if you practice and attack w all u have???Your likely to find success. Kick them on the ground. Don't set out to kill. But if you must fight? Hit first. Hit hard. Don't let up. And always have two weapons. Even if it's a small knife and mace. God Bless and hopefully you won't end up here.

Mobility - and that's why the UK is so lucky being the first country in the world to officially recognise parkour/freerunning as a sport, cause it means money from the ministry for various classes, all age groups, with professional instructors, essentially an amazing opportunity to learn parkour basics, skills/techniques, even conditioning & all the other good stuff and it also means this option is accessible to the general public on a big scale, which is something other countries simply do not have - so please, if you're reading this comment and you haven't learned it yet, reach out to people from Parkour UK, Parkour Generations, ADAPT Certification programs, etc. and they will help you & guide you which option to choose best for you or somebody you can recommend this option to!

I so wish you were near where I live in the states!! I’ve tried to find someone like you for years! I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and blue belt in Japanese jujitsu. Jujitsu is the only thing that will remotely help in a street fight! I wish I knew then what I know now I’d not have taken Tae Kwon Do as with the exception of a few moves it’s useless! I’ve been in law enforcement for over 20 years and am always looking for someone like you, but can’t seem to find them. The closest I’ve come is Krav Maga but even with that there is no one near where I live… I’d take any suggestions if you have them?

In the mid 1980's finishing Medical Lab at University, preparing for exam with three girls (friends) I had my girl friend, everyone in the lab program knew that, I almost killed 2 or maybe 3 attackers. The chemistry lab had 2 doors both at the front, and 1 of the 3 girls ex-boy friend and a current class mate an Iranian who was jealous (I guess) came in with two friends all three were over 6' 200 + pounds, I was at the time 5'8" 175 give or take. When they entered they took away any manner of egress and after the trash talking, I told the Iranian, "dude I come here to get my degree and improve my life and that is it. A little more trash talk and they left. My 3 friends who happen to be girls, asked me "Hector where you scared?" I said only a little. Among other things we were practicing "thin layer chromatography drug screen" the quench (used to stop and fix the reaction prior to reading the results was reagent grade HYDROCHLORIC ACID and there was a good size beaker under a hood where the testing equipment and supplies were kept. As soon as I realized the circumstances I moved a few feet to the hood and my hand was resting on the outer ledge of the hood very near the beaker. If these morons would have attacked at least 1 more than likely 2 or 3 would have had extremely corrosive HCL acid in their face. If they breathed and some of that acid got in their breathing passage more than likely they would have died, at the very least the were going to be out of the fight in seconds and have something to remember me by for life. Despite being 23 Year old very fit and practicing Karate I was in a severe deficit of force against 3 big dudes, and so legally in USA I would have been justified, it would have interrupted my schooling and would have been a fluster cluck. So verbal Judo and a little luck got me out of a big mess. I know the Iranian, found out just how much danger he was in, the way women talked and gossip, needless to say he stayed the hell away form me threw the remainder of the year till graduation. The brain is one of the most powerful weapons, being aware of what is around you and the possible uses, can save your bacon.

Nice. I think one can string advice in your videos together to have a standard response for most encounters. Obviously better to adapt, but for a lot of people like me a standard operating procedure that is well drilled is probably best. I have done this in the past and it worked pretty well. Not amazing, but well enough and both times (in London as a slightly naïve NZer) the assailant was shocked that I had actually done something decisive. I was decisive because it was drilled and pre-programed for if I couldn't avoid a situation (no decision processes running in my brain to get muddled by adrenaline). Also, having done a lot of outdoor sports there is real value in not deciding wwhat you are going to do, but telling yourself it might happen and you know what to do, you have practiced it). Here is an attempt to string together your lessons: Mobility, yes though practicing awareness of surroundings (this video and others you have done). Watch for the group of attackers (your video and the one on sucker punches) Stand slightly off to side with hands up and chin down (your video ) . Don't enter into the argument (personally I just say nothing, not a word, and it works pretty well- I don't believe it comes off as weak) Beware the sucker punch. Then solar plexus punch (well drilled) if you see shoulders twitch. I would add to that move a built-in mini side step to take your head off line from a sucker punch. Then a well drilled stand up routine (on your video, foot behind rear hand and close arm guard) ) if you go down. Well drilled - I do it as part of my HIIT routine. It's a great move, especially if it happens before you know it.

I'm not sure if the sparring here is considered to be Randori but I noticed when you were fighting the guy with the knife and you took him down that you didn't use any knee strikes to the body which would be highly effective against that kind of ground combat.
