I'm definitely the manuals guy but with ADHD. I have to have the instructions right in front of my face and I'll read them five times minimum, then take it apart and do it again because I missed something.

I'm definitely not the manuals guy per se but if you pull out that manual you can read that you cannot just pull that King Air off of 135 flights and fly it only part 91 because you don't have time to do the inspection right now. It needs an inspection and it ain't 'posta fly until it gets it...
@brycebuildsit Жыл бұрын
Trust me, as a GA guy, I know lots of little operators who try to get out of inspections. It baffles me sometimes.

Then there's the guy who can't carry a tune but sings along with the radio, lol. And the guy that EVERYthing is filtered through what he experienced at his last job. We called one guy 'YMCA' because he was constantly saying, "Well, in the Navy..."

I'm sure there are still a few places you might run into that. But on the whole, A&P's are incredible people. They are kind, Helpful and very respectful. We are a brotherhood, we will give each other a hard time and joke but when it gets down to it most of us will give someone the shirt off are back. Yes there are bad apples but there are in every large group

@@brycebuildsit not just that, but refusing to allow Owner Manufactured parts and other fixes. I had a nice long chat with the FAA at Oshkosh about this very issue. I didn't name names, but if A&Ps don't start doing their jobs I will share names with the FAA. I got approval from one of the top FAA officials regarding fixing my airplane using owner manufactured parts. Parts I had correctly learned the FAA will not issue an STC for, and he verified that. Th FAA confirmed I understood the regulations correctly on and told me to do what I intended to do. And being a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer myself, I am fully capable of not only designing the parts, but fabricating them, and providing any necessary documentation (minor or major alterations). I build planes, I design planes, and I will get my older plane fixed. And I won't let incompetent A&Ps stop me, especially with the FAA's approval. I'm tired of A&Ps acting like they know everything, but when faced with Owner Manufactured parts, suddenly the truth is revealed, that they know nothing next to an actual engineer, and are afraid to sign off work because they don't actually know as much as they claim as they try to lord over others. But they are perfectly ok with putting junkyard parts that are 60+yrs old onto my airplane KNOWING it is going to fail since it's pre-fatigued (aluminum). And then charge me 10x what it would cost me to make an IDENTICAL one brand new, for a JUNK part. Never mind I can show the original, part, the new part, and documentation, and answer any questions. The law allows it, they need to do their jobs, otherwise I don't ever what to hear another mechanic tell me how much more qualified they are than me ever again. I'm tired of mechanics acting like they are god's gift to humanity.
@brycebuildsit Жыл бұрын
@SoloRenegade I hear you, I think allot of mechanics are scared to take liability for anything. But ultimately that's what being an IA is taking responsibility for the aircraft. I have had personal experience with owner produced parts. What I will say is that the FSDO for my region is very strict on it but they have worked with the owner and I to make something.
@SoloRenegade Жыл бұрын
@@brycebuildsit the A&Ps in my area said they were told they can't do it, I talked to one of the top guys at the FAA and he asked me who told him that. He said the law wasn't changed, and to go ahead and fix my airplane with Owner Manufactured parts per Federal LAW. An A&P doesn't need FSDO approval to sign off on minor alteration Owner Manufactured parts that he or I was aware of. It's the mechanic's responsibility, not the FSDO. Is the FSDO staffed by A&Ps? Is the FSDO fixing my airplane? The FSDO cannot change nor overrule Federal Law. Does the A&P assume responsibility when they put junk parts on my airplane? No. when it fails, they charge me more money. Why are A&Ps fearful of new parts that are so easy to make children do it in school? Are children more professional and skilled than A&Ps?
@brycebuildsit Жыл бұрын
@SoloRenegade the honest answer is that as soon as there is an issue, the FSDO will turn around and strip the A&P of his certificate or send him to weeks of retraining. I literally had it happen to me once we had to install a new detent lock on a fuel selector. The part was not available for purchase new or used, so I contacted the FAA and the owner and I made a new one. 1 year later a new IA on the aircraft called the FSDO and told them we made an un-airworthy repair. Literally, the only thing that saved my bacon was I found the email I had from my PMI that said, "You have no other option other than to make one IAW with and listed the FAR." And get this, the FSDO inspector standing in front of me still wanted to give me a hard time about it. I am on your side here but my fight is that there needs to be more consistency across FSDO's. Even my FSDO knows that Mechanics will go to out of state FSDO's to get Field approval for mods because ours won't. My local FSDO is also known for pulling people's A&P's for the most nominal reasons, I know a guy who had to go to 3 weeks of retraining because they suspended his cert. Why you ask he topped off the fluid in a compass......
