The self-titled debut album from Montrose. Grossly underappreciated at the time. Widely recognized today as one of the greatest rock albums. Launched the career of Sammy Hagar. A definite must have.

I’ve never thought of a record that has a top ten single as being under rated.

I tend to think of singles and albums as apples and oranges. There are plenty of LPs with top 10 singles that are overrated, so it makes sense that there would be some underrated as well. Certainly in the soul arena, that tends to be consistent. Thanks for stopping by, VR! 🤘😁 Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦

Goats Head Soup is my favorite Stones album. Ashes Are Burning was a big FM radio hit back in the day.

Great choices as usual (although I have not heard them all). Really pleased to see some Renaissance appreciation. Big fan here, Correction ,Annie Haslam is the vocalist and Betty Thatcher is the lyricist. Annie Haslam I believe is doing a a farewell tour this year. She is an amazing vocalist. My top five 1.Paul Butterfield - Better Days : not the red hot blues of the Butterfield Blues Band but solid blues with guitar whiz Amos Garret on board. 2. Brian Auger's Oblivion Express Closer To It! Smokin latin,jazz rock. Great covers of "Compared To What and Inner City Blues.Outstanding originals too. This is a desert island pick .Definitely check this one out if you have never heard it 3.Greg Allman Laid Back- sad bluesy album recorded in the wake of brother Duanes's death. "Queen of Hearts" is my favorite. 4. Cold Blood Thriller - funky funky album with great lead vocals from the vastly overlooked Lydia Pense. 5. Bonnie Raitt Give It Up - I love early Raitt . Bonnie really shines on her mix of blues,folk and rock.

Sharks, First Water from 1973 with Andy Fraser, Chris Spedding and Snips on vocals is highly underrated. It flew under the radar at the time but it's a great album from start to finish.

Thanks. Ashes are Burning is my favorite Renaissance album! I like: Deodato- Prelude, Brian Auger- Closer to It, Sutherland Brothers and Quiver- Lifeboat(American version), Kayak- See See the Sun and Spooky Tooth- Witness. I first thought of Mahavishnu Orchestra- Birds of Fire but I guess it’s not underrated!

The singer on Ashes are burning is Annie Haslam who trained as an opera singer. The Free guitarist was W.G. Snuffy Walden not Watson.. He is on the first Stray Dog album also from 1973 which probably rocks harder than the Free album, really underrated..

@@vinylrecordplayer Thanks! It's a good CC with some funky stuff like Midnight Special and the title track. Great guitar work throughout and it still has that classic southern soul sound. Also, I'll be checking out the Willie Hutch on your say so. Not someone I'm familiar with, so looking forward to it,

@@vinylrecordplayer Def true. She has a KUDU best of for those not looking to deep dive. It trails off a little at the end as the disco influence seeps in, but otherwise it's very good.

Goats Head is for me the Stones still close to their peak. I think some of the songs seem a little under-developed - Dancing with Mr D in particular. It has the makings of something great but doesn't get there for me. But 100 years, Hide Your Love, Coming Down, Star Star, Winter and Angie are all great I think. And I like Heartbreaker and Silver Train. Even Can You Hear the Music has grown on me through the years - I really like it's vibe. I think it's also worth mentioning that they recorded Criss Cross Man, Waiting on a Friends and Tops all during the Goats Head Sessions. Fast Talking, Slow Walking might also have been done then as well. In contrast, what are the notable outtakes from It's Only Rock n Roll? I think IORR is the band's first mediocre album and is them out of gas vis a vis songwriting. Even the title track was a Ronnie Wood song, correct? The only thing that sparkles on that album is Fingerprint file.

I'm in agreement with almost everything here. Point is that so many people talk as if Exile was it for the quality Stones. Totally agree with you on It's Only Rock N' Roll, though. Never really liked that one, and outside of the amazingness Some Girls, the rest of their discography pales in comparison to this era.
@grahamgreene779
@grahamgreene779 2 күн бұрын
@@vinylrecordplayer yeah we are pretty much on the same page, except I would say "Some Girls' era. Specifically, the sessions that made up Some Girls and Emotional Rescue (an album i really like but know is not nearly as good as SG). The Some Girls era led to those 2 albums + much of Tattoo You which I think is pretty excellent and the 2nd disc on the Some Girls deluxe, which for me is far and away the best bonus material they have ever released - It's essentially a lost album with killer tracks like 'Claudine,' 'So Young,' 'Do You Think I Really Care,' 'I love you Too Much,' 'Keep up Blues,' etc. And also I really love Black and Blue which is anomalous in their discography in a few ways, but I think it's so solid, even if it's more a collection of killer grooves than songs.
