Vertical Farms Run by AI and Robots To Solve the Land Crisis
One of the oldest and most fundamental professions in the world is agriculture and farming and looking back, humanity has come a long way over the millennia in how we farm and grow crops with the evolution of various technologies. Over time, as the world population continues to grow and land becomes more scarce, people have realized the need to get creative and become more efficient in farming.
With the population of the world being the largest it has ever been, the responsibility to feed this ever-growing population is getting harder and harder which is why experts think that vertical farming is the future.
Vertical farms are indoors and can be placed anywhere, making them crucial in a time where farmable land is on decline.

Clearing of forest for farming land is is bad. 475 trees cut down every second (because population is also increasing). The area which could go for giant trees, not just for OXYGEN but also for WILDLIFE is going for small plants. The long term cost of land farming is VERY high. Building up costs but we are ALREADY building so much and so high. For farming we need little vertical space.

"12,000 years ago there were no farms" Are you talking about the age of Gobekli Tepe in modern day Turkey? We may have had much older farms in human history than that. More than 20,000 years ago humans were already engaged in farming near the Sea of Galilee with a type of cereal or grain, and used flint sickles to harvest the crop. Before that, we can only speculate, but even elephants will cultivate their forests. Why wouldn't humans from before 20,000 years ago? Gobekli Tepe is currently the oldest known stone structure we've found, made just after the end of the last ice age. it was a gathering place for multiple tribes. 9,600 BC, "pre-pottery Neolithic". The person who recognized the significance of this site, Klaus Schmidt, died in 2014 unfortunately, but the discovery of that flint sickle at Galilee (in 2017??) happened after his death.

There are many factors that effect prices. Energy and labor for one, differ through out geographical location. And while it might make sense to sell produce in baron areas for a higher prices, your costs will also differ depending on your market, effecting the feasibility of a farm in that area. A lot of these systems are designed specifically for projects although they have some idea what the base cost will be. Unfortunately, you usually have to deal with a sales team as some specifics will change the price as the project depends on what you want to grow and the market in your area.

While its possible reduce costs by using machines instead of humans, it is important to consider the full environmental impact of these choices. Some options to consider in order to mitigate the environmental impact of machine use might include using more energy-efficient machines, sourcing materials and components in a more sustainable manner, and implementing strategies to reduce waste and pollution. It is also important to consider the overall balance between the costs and benefits of using machines versus humans, including not just financial costs but also social and environmental costs and impacts.

As great as this is, providing profits for a company, waiting for it to penetrate the market worldwide, is very infuriating. I really wished such technologies were open-sourced, shared, with advances and reduction in cost being instantly available worldwide. And the other barrier, profits, should also not be there. Nationalized companies use the profits for government programs, but without necessiting a federal entity in there, the best would be a deferred loan to purchase the metal and tools, being reimbursed by the sell of the food produced locally, sustaining the few jobs necessary, but lowering the price of the produce once the capital is payed off. It can be a local neighboorhood project, or a municipal thing, but the less it's a company, the more it's a social project, the better it is (as the commodification of food, a basic human need, is pretty fucked up). Anyway, automatization and AI tend to bring the cost (and profits) down for Capitalists anyway, as there is less people to exploit in the chain. Might as well make the endeavor collaborative anyway, instead of the current startup silos in constant competition for market penetration and tech advance, winning sometimes by financement fuckery instead of innovation gradient. The main reason this slow spread is infuriating me (compared to the open-source model), is the fact that low-income countries, those that lack the most access to good crop lands, those that need this tech the most, are likely not going to see it coming to them until after it's been trivialized in higher-income countries, and thus the upfront initial cost and the expertise needed has been lowered significantly. It's also the countries most impacted by climate change, most at risk when the next hurricane or drought happens, most in need of water-saving tech, most in need to isolate food production in a building, that need the most to transition from a subsistance-farming model. The same kind of logic that prevents drug companies from investing in low-cost drugs to cure easily treatable diseases wrecking low-income population: because it's not profitable. Profits in inelastic markets (for basic survival needs such as food, health care, housing, etc.), are morally reprehensible, and it's high time we see it that way. The competition we see now is great for innovation, but it does not have to be encased in the current capitalist framework. But it's a chicken and egg scenario. It's not those companies job to replace Capitalism, and they are doing great things, it's just so sad to imagine how much faster and better this would be if it was a collaboration across the field, instead of isolated companies re-creating the wheel every time. Most of these companies boast that they did a lot of research for taste, smell, etc. Ok, share that, it's data that would be really helpful to everyone. But no, it would give an edge to their competition.

Climate Change is a leftist shithole globalist hoax. Capitalism is the only way the western world survives. Venezuela went from the most prosperous South American nation in the 20th Century to a socialist shithole starving the population via leftist inflationary spending. They got more oil than any other nation on the planet. Refugees out the ass. Their governments are as bad as Obama-Biden-Harris. Anyone who opposes capitalism is begging for World War 3. I agree with you 100% on open-source, because ESG corporatism has fractured off of capitalism to become it's own political terrorist campaign of the radical left. I think Wall Street should be napalmed like communists 60 years ago. Open source is competition, that is good, that is my definition of capitalism. When you get regulation, big government, taxation, financial institutions, & ESG involved you can guarantee whatever the little guy's vision of vertical farming will get squashed for elitist douchebag tyranny. Necessity use to be the driver of innovation. Want local-urban farming? OK, what kind of vegetable production of is going to be required to pay off the land, building, hydroponic infrastructure, employee, electrical & the 3 levels of taxation? The start up costs are astronomical. I made a makeshift indoor apartment garden & it cost a fortune. Government can't do anything better than the private sector. Are we going to throw some AOC union jobs at the "problem"?? Let's get some City Democrats involved... Forget it, Gavin Newsome will be on a diesel John Deere in Nebraska next Tuesday.

A billion dollar high-tech facilities to grow 50 cents salads.. This what happen when engineers want to grow food.. Just let the farmers do their work.. The issue of food security is the supply of staple food: grains like wheat & rice, and livestock feed like corn & soybeans.. not salads and tomatoes which everyone can grow at their own backyard..

Interesting opening statement: 12 thousand years ago. So how many of the billionaires have these systems set up or being set up in their bunkers? Well, I wish them luck. Maybe some of them will survive. Hopefully the grandchildren will grow better ethics one day.

AI can provide farmers with real-time insights from their fields, allowing them to identify areas that need irrigation, fertilization, or pesticide treatment. Also, innovative farming practices like vertical agriculture may help increase food production while minimizing the use of resources. 6:09 [Intellias]

Lots of flashy words but try feeding more than 100 people with that unnecessary complex and expensive system. Conventional farming need dirt, sun and water and we already got it all. No need to invent the wheel again unless someone is expecting a nuclear winter... In which case I doubt there's aluminum profiles, electricity and automation systems available.

Could this system be applied to the cultivation and harvesting of pear tomatoes? Could someone tell me what would be the cost (and the space needed to mount it, how many square meters) to apply this system to grow 3,000 tomato plants?

This is a trillion dollar industry. I am in negotiations with investors that are ready to switch to indoor AI farms in 11 countries. Of which 3 countries have already launched pilot. Water scarcity is real. Unfortunately, human soil farming is not possible where aquifers are dried up.
