Back in the day when film cameras used mechanical light meters - yes mechanical - and there were no internal electronics, the "bunny ear" tabs on the Nikon lens would connect to a prong sticking out of the camera body and would allow a mechanical link to the camera body when you changed aperture by turning the aperture dial. You could then still use the built in mechanical light meter even with different apertures.
@mattih2 жыл бұрын
This all sounds wild to me 😂
@shedluvphotography90062 жыл бұрын
@@mattih it was pretty wild. A selenium photo diode drove a mechanical dial that you could see in the viewfinder for exposure. You had to rotate the lens through the full aperture range when mounting on the camera to calibrate the light meter. The AI stood for auto indexing (meaning the camera knew what the aperture was set to). An electrical connection telling the camera what the aperture was set to didn't come out until the late 70s (AI lenses).

I just adapted three Minolta lenses that I purchased in the early 80s, a 28 2.8, 50 1.8 and a 70-200 4. They all work great on my A7S3 and 5DMK4. Fun to play with and a great look.
@xperrosinsangrex2 жыл бұрын
The only thing is that in the Canon, there will be decrease in quality since the adapter needs an infinity correction element, so light will not hit the sensor directly. That's why I got a mirrorless (Sony A7II) in the first place, to use with all my manual focus lenses through adapters.

i have heard of the helios and Jupiter, good lenses, I only have a Canon FD 50mm 1.8 but I love it. I use it on a GH5 with speedbooster+ adapter+ a 2x tele-crop and a ND filter. Then it is one glass on the speed-booster, 1 on the adapter for EF to FD, then 2 glass on the converter, then 2 pieces on the lens+ a nd-filter. Imagine how that is not accurate. Been shoting quite a bit on the nikkor AI-S lenses, I built myself a set of the 24mm f2, 35mm f1,4, 50 f1.4, 85mm f1.4 aswell as the most recent addition to the set, a 16mm fisheye. Shootin on them is really great! I can strongly recomend picking a series of lenses and the picking up a nice set, so that you can actually change focal length without affecting character too much...

Nikon AI means "Automatic Indexing" which is the link between lens aperture and body. This way, the camera knew which aperture you have set on the lens via the AI toggle link and could put a proper exposure time for you.
