Wait Until Dark was originally a successful Broadway with movie actress Lee Remick. Then it was made into an equally successful movie with Audrey Hepburn. That is why it is so well written.

Man killer recommendations. I have all of them except Stage Fright which “should” arrive tomorrow….fingers crossed lol. All of those are great though and I enjoyed them a ton. Another under the radar Warner Archive worth grabbing is Running on Empty. I really loved that one when I watched it last year.

Hey Ken a.k.a. Mad Dog, I too love WB Archive Collection, I've been adding them lately as Amazon has been putting them on sale here and there. You cant go wrong with WB's A.C. the video and sound quality is always excellent. Has for Hitchcock there many great movies but for now I highly recommend North by Northwest (1959) w/ Cary Grant, it's not a WB archive collection title but it is a WB, I cannot recommend that to you enough.

Another Warner Archive title that just HAD to have in my collection was The Jazz Singer (1927), mostly for its obvious very important historical significance as the first film with synchronized sound (in a couple scenes, but still). That moment where Jolson says "Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain't heard nothin' yet!" was a breakthrough moment in cinematic history, and it must have been amazing for someone back in 1927 to actually hear the words recorded with the film like that.

Warner is sitting on the last Carole Lombard film called Mr and Mrs Smith directed by Hitchcock. It is last major US Hitchcock Release not on Blu-ray. Stage Freight is awesome. The Thing is a great Howard Hawks picture. He made so many excellent movies.

Thanks. Hitchcock let Marlene Dietrich do the lighting for all her scenes. He told the cinematographer "Just let her light her scenes. She probably knows more about it than you do anyway." Cheers.

Does Amazon still do that 4 for $44? Before I started back collecting as I do now, I never really took advantage of those sales because I never knew that one day Warner Archive's website would close its doors and go away as an online provider. But if Amazon still provides that sale, that is fantastic! I would definitely jump on that again if they do.

One of Audrey Hepburn's best films is THE NUN'S STORY, based on a true story, and brilliantly acted by her and Peter Finch, as well as others. A truly spectacular film. As for Hitchcock, you might look at some of the films he made in England in the mid to late thirties, like SABOTAGE or THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH. And a true horror when he went back to England for the first time in many years to shoot FRENZY which has lots of surprises. Jane Wyman was an Oscar Winner for JOHNNY BELINDA, and had a long career at Warner Bros, marrying Ronald Reagan and building a career that went from silly to important. My favorite of hers is as Gregory Peck's hard working wife in THE YEARLING, a true classic.

Thanks for reviewing Stage Fright. I haven't seen that one in probably 15 or 20 years and I'd like to check it out again. If you're looking for more Hitchcock, try Suspicion with Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine -- a young woman suspects her husband is trying to kill her. It's a thriller with some romantic and comedic elements.

The French film, Diabolique inspired Hitchcock to make Psycho. Early Hitchcock to check - Saboteur, shadow of Doubt. Later great Hitchcock, Frenzy, and Family Plot. (Skin Game was not directed by Alfred Hitchcock) 😁

I really wish Warner Bros. would release their double feature of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The pre-code, Fredric March verison (1932) which he won best actor for. The only time an actor won an Oscar for staring in a horror film, until Anthony Hopkins won for "Silence of the Lambs" (if you consider that a horror film and not a thriller). As well as the Spencer Tracy's (1941) verison which were both released on a Warner Bros. label DVD as a double bill, but never received a Blu-Ray edition. They are both great in their own right. The Paramount 1932 pre-code film is awesome just for that fact alone, in addition to the revolutionary camera work that it has. The make-up definitely leans more towards a monster movie, he difinately looks like a primitive Neanderthal man. A make-up that I feel ranks with the original Universal's Frankenstein. It also includes an amazing transformation that was achieved by having the actor wear red make-up under red lighting, then fading the red light exposing the make-up. The black and white film didn't show the make-up under the red lighting until it was faded out, giving it the illusion of occurring in front of the camera with no edits. Unfortunately, this film doesn't get the same love and exposure that the classic Universal monster's get. My theory is that when MGM was releasing their 1941 version of the film, they bought the Paramount version and shelved it in their studio vault so that it wouldn't compete with their film, and as a result it was never shown on television during the 1950's thru the 1970's when most fans of these type of films were left with an indelible impression as youngsters. The MGM film though not as great as the Fredric March's version is still very entertaining and impressive(some actually prefer this version over the March one) The make-up is perhaps a bit more believable, opting for a "evil, sadistic" look. It also has a great surreal dream-like montage that has to be seen to be believed. Although I doubt Warner Bros. will release them on their main label as they had before and as a double bill. I can only hope that one day they with release them separately on Blu-Ray from their Warner Bros. Archive Collection like they did "Mad Love" staring Peter Lorrie and "The Mystery of the Wax Museum" staring Fay Wray (in an early two strip color process, which looks amazing). I can't highly recommand both versions of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" enough, a must see for anyone who appreciates cinema's early horror films, as well as the other two archival films mentioned.

Stagefright: The shot was on purpose - at the time they could not spit the screen to keep a person close and one far away in focus so it's a kind of an overlay.

I sometimes get so tired of explaining this. John Carpenter's 1982 "The Thing" IS NOT a sequel to 1951's "The Thing From Another World". No matter what anyone (including John Carpenter himself) says, the 1951 movie is NOT a remake (or part of a "franchise"). While they both draw upon John W. Campbell's novella, "Who Goes There?", there are few aspects of either film in the other. The only thing they have in common is 1) there is an alien that crashed on Earth, and 2) the story takes place in a cold clime. Even this has an important difference. The '51 film takes place in the Arctic (near the North Pole) while the '82 film is set in Antarctica. No character from either film is in the other. The alien in "Thing From Another World" is vegetable-based and needs blood (animal or human) to reproduce via seed pods (ostensibly to take over the world). The alien in "John Carpenter's "The Thing" assimilates the life forms it comes into contact with (ostensibly to eventually take over the world, other animal life included). In "Thing From Another World" there is a military presence as protagonists as well as a love interest for the ranking officer. Neither are found in "John Carpenter's The Thing". Similarities: 1) An alien crashes on Earth; 2) The film is set in a cold clime; 3) Fire is used as the main weapon against the alien (moving to electricity in "Thing From Another World"). "John Carpenter's The Thing" is more faithful to the source material. But both films are very good, and as you say, should be looked at as separate entities. I think the idea "John Carpenter's The Thing" was a sequel came about because people are lazy and just abbreviated the title from "The Thing From Another World" to simply, "The Thing".

Interesting Audrey Hepburn Fact: a true hero, she was a member of the Dutch Resistance during WWII. Fun Fact out of the way, I have to take issue with your mispronunciation of names, Ken. It’s one thing, understandable even, to mispronounce an unfamiliar name once, but if you’re going to use a name multiple times, make sure you get it correct, otherwise, hearing a name mispronounced several times is closely akin to Chinese Water Torture. That said, just google “pronounce Dietrich (for example),” and you’ll have a proper pronunciation.
