I clicked on the video because your skills are absolutely amazing! And I too draw upside all the time. Not portraits, but my Gnomes and everything else. It is such an underrated technique!

I’ve saved this for months and didn’t watch it until just now. Turns out, I’m going to need this knowledge this week! Thank you!

Very helpful, thanks you! I struggle with adding too many colors, trying to color match, and then it ends up looking like a mess without harmony.

I think you touched on what I struggle with, not making the second layer to dark and how much water to use. I am just sketching portraits right now or using one color. But it is a challenge. Beautiful portraits

Very useful video. I have always loved doing portraits and am now working on one of my grandson. What colors to use on skin are the most challenging to me and also the jaw line

This is an incredibly timely video! I’m on 3rd attempt of my two youngest grands. Your tips are going to be so helpful as you touched on exactly what I needed to hear. Watching her eyes emerge is particularly helpful and building the layers is what I need to practice. Thank you!

Hey, I just wanted to comment and say I love your tutorials, especially your kids' water color channel. I love following those tutorials with my nephews and how creative they are. I can't wait for more of those! I'm commenting here since I can't leave comments on that channel. I also love these tutorials too-- there's always something interesting to try!

Thanks so much for making this video because I REALLY needed ALL the tips you’ve imparted. I’ve been trying to paint my grandson but I’m ALWAYS unhappy with the results. My biggest problem is getting his skin color right. I’m going to keep trying as sooner or later, I WILL do a portrait I’m happy with so I’m not giving up. The tips you’ve given are priceless to me and I’m going to give them a try. Thanks again! ❤️👍😁

Wow Emily, your portraits are fantastic. In last 2 months after many land/sea scapes, animals etc I finally tried the human face, after 5 poor attempts I managed a good representative one! Theyre very hard! Thankyou for your tips. I'll keep on trying to improve!

Totally unbelievable. Everything looks so smooth. Your blending is amazing. You spoke about letting things dry completely. Is that the secret? I get water lines all the time. Also your ability to sketch free hand is amazing. I know first hand that the ability to get the proportions correct is crucial so I got one of those measuring dividers. ( forgot the real name) it a way to enlarge and measure but it is really complicated for me. ( measurements that is ) lastly. How do you keep your paper flat. Tape? Thank you, Marianne

This video tutorial was wonderfully helpful Emily! 🥰💕 I am still struggling with the drawing skills of my portraits, along with the soft & hard edges of my paintings. I am definitely learning to enjoy taking a long slow time with my paintings despite what subjects they are. I am also realizing that trying to match the exact colors of the reference material is not necessary. These paintings are all so wonderful! Thanks for sharing this valuable information with us! Enjoy your week ahead! ✏️🎨💕

I’ve been wanting to try portraits for while but I’m quite intimidated by the thought of trying to get the skin colour right. Your advice to not try too hard to match the skin tones exactly will remove some of the fear I think. I love your portraits ❤

Hey Emily, I have this problem atm that when taping my page down I find the paint still leaks through and ruins the nice border. Do you have any solutions on how to prevent or fix this? Love your paintings and your art I am forever inspired by your realistic animals and people!!
