Fabulous Emily I couldn’t do that ,I’m not very good at faces much love Ann uk x
@EmilyOlsonArt4 жыл бұрын
Faces are tricky, perhaps mostly because we go into the project with the high expectation that it MUST look like that person! But with practice it gets much easier, and if you are kind to yourself, you'll enjoy it! Thanks for your kind comments, Ann!

@EmilyOlsonArt4 жыл бұрын
You could decide to do all the details with just watercolor, but I can’t say it would look exactly the same. I enjoy the subtle textures in the skin that are achieved with colored pencil.

Beautiful! How would you change the skin tone for someone who was more fair skinned? Same pigment but lighter wash or different pigment? Thanks!
@EmilyOlsonArt4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the reference photo, but I do use these same color mixes for fair skin, just lighter. :-)

Beautiful. I was just wondering if you drew the portrait freehand?
@EmilyOlsonArt4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! For this one I used transfer paper to get a quick sketch. Time constraints sometimes make this necessary. But I am a firm believer in regularly practicing your drawing skills. :-)

Hi Emily Thank you for this gorgeous work of art. I checked through the real time tutorials you offer when you become a fearless artist member and I couldn't find this one. Is it already in real time on KZbin ?
@EmilyOlsonArt4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! This one is not yet available in real time, but I have a lot of interest in it, so it's definitely in the lineup! I add a new full length tutorial to my membership site about once a week.

I worked on a piece for 2 days now, but I messed up the shadow and now I’m contemplating if I should cover the dark parts by burnishing with color pencil. Does color pencil help hide the extra darkness of watercolor?
@EmilyOlsonArt3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend using pencil to try and fix or lighten areas other than tiny, specific highlights. If you're using cotton paper, you can actually rewet the shadow and lift out some of the paint with a large stiff brush.

Are acrylics better or are Watercolour potraits better?
@EmilyOlsonArt4 жыл бұрын
I do not paint with acrylics, so I can’t speak with any authority on how well they work for portraiture. Of course I am somewhat biased towards watercolor. :-)

@@EmilyOlsonArt The Thing is I just came across your channel And Your work in watercolour is SO. SO. SO. SO. GOOD. YOU'RE A PRO. you're inspiring me to use water colour to paint the birthday portrait i want to make for my aunt. BUT am super scared what if i mess up. Also, can you make a tutorial on how to draw the face we are gonna make a potrait of ?
@EmilyOlsonArt4 жыл бұрын
Nothing to be scared of! I get it though-especially when you want to paint a loved one. It feels like so much pressure! I would start by practicing painting faces that you don’t feel emotionally invested in-and you can even do one or two practice runs on the final painting. You have nothing to lose! I will see about making a video about drawing a face from a reference photo-good idea!

Realistic to me is not being able to tell the difference between a portrait drawing and a photograph. You are very talented, but this is not photo-realistic. It is, however, an amazing drawing. Mine turn out the same way. It looks like the person I'm drawing but still looks like a painting rather than a photo. I know I can just "take a picture" if that's the look I'm going for, but I'd like to see if it's possible to get people to think that something created with watercolor pencils at first glance IS a photo.
