Steven Universe is a popular American animated series that was the first cartoon to be created solely by a woman for Cartoon Network.
The woman in question, Maryland's own Rebecca Sugar, based the lead character - a half-alien boy who lives with the Crystal Gems (magical, humanoid aliens named Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst) in the fictional town of Beach City - on her younger brother Steven, who just so happens to be an artist on the series. The show follows the titular character's adventures as he and his friends attempt to protect the world.
The show is, of course, aimed mainly at kids, so it's largely inoffensive, but that didn't stop certain parts of the world (the Middle East, the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe, for example) from censoring certain aspects of it - and that's what this video's all about.
Some of the things in the show that have been changed around the world include; dialogue in the show has been altered to be less offensive, signage in the show has been altered to be less offensive, the violence in the show has been watered-down considerably, anything deemed to be homosexual has been edited out (yes, really, in 2018!), and some scenes have been cut short (with some entire episodes not getting aired).

@@emilyyant8347 Idk about that, I feel like they changed it unnecessarily. When Steven asks what Ruby and Sapphire are doing, in the original version Lapis answers "flirting" but in the Swedish dub she says "dillar" or "villar" (it's a bit difficult to hear) and that basically means "dawdling" or "being distracted". It's really odd because the Swedish translation of the word "flirting" is very similar to the English word so they could easily have Lapis say "flirting" in Swedish too. And when Ruby and Sapphire are talking in the original, Ruby tells Sapphire to focus, and Sapphire answers "I'm trying, but all I wanna look at is you", and Ruby replies "Don't worry, you can look at me when you're running for home". The first sentence in the Swedish dub, when Ruby has asked Sapphire to focus, Sapphire says "Jag försöker, jag har problem med koncentrationen" (I'm trying, I'm having problems concentrating) and Ruby answers "Ingen fara, fokusera på segern när du springer runt" (Don't worry, focus on winning when you run). I feel like they could have easily made a version of the dub where Ruby and Sapphire's relationship wasn't erased. Why add the extra bit about Sapphire not being able to concentrate when she just as easily could have said "All I wanna look at is you" in Swedish? And why make it about Sapphire focusing on winning when the sentence was about how she could look at Ruby while running? I get that maybe they had to change that sentence slightly since baseball isn't a popular sport in Sweden, and Swedish kids might not understand what "running for home" means, but they could have changed it to "Don't worry, you can look at me when you run" and the meaning wouldn't have been lost

That’s why it’s called an indirect kiss. An indirect kiss is when someone drinks or eats something and then another person places their mouth on the same exact spot. In this case, Steven drank the juice box from a straw and Connie drank the juice box from the same straw as well.

Okay, just thought I might say this, because I see a lot of people going off about this. Gems do not have genders, is correct, and wrong at the same time. The GEM, the actual ROCK that is the source of their power, does not have a gender. Its an inanimate object. HOWEVER, the FORM that they take, does. Why else would they go by female pronouns? Why would Steven call Rose mom? Why would they have female builds, clothing, and voices? There is a difference from the gem itself and the physical form, y’all.

When I introduced Steven universe to my 7 year old sister (who was 6 at the time) she LOVED the show. We both enjoy watching it together, and sadly we can't watch the other series because Netflix hasn't added the others. But, anyway she knew straight away Ruby was a girl since garnet was a girl, she got confused why there was two girls kissing in jailbreak, but I explained to her girls can like eachother too and, she seemed fine with that.

I can't speak on behalf on the LGBT community but personally a child with a set of parents is better than a child with no parents at all. It also makes sense to censor things depending on the culture. The age of consent is lower in other countries, so shows brought to the US will likely have those romantic and intimate scenes cut or edited (despite it being perfectly fine in the country of origin). Or the buddhist sign that is easily mistaken for a swastika. Many Asian films and cartoons have them, but they usually get cut in the US despite being completely innocent. Even simpler things. A korean cartoon about Korean history has the main character eating dog (back when lots of people did it). That would never fly in the US. It isnt necessarily wrong, but the audience would see it as bad. I think that it isnt so much the networks being bigots, so much as them knowing that certain things will have them being harassed by angry parents who just to conclusions about messages being taught. That being said, I think things would be better if we didnt edit anything. Lots of editing is useless anyway like avoiding showing fight contact or bleeping curse words (we all know what theyre saying anyway).
