In plenty of ways, Anakin is a classic tragic hero. He had all of this power and capability to do almost whatever he wanted, he had to experience perhaps the one thing he could not change, he is subsequently terrified of what else he actually can't change, and he fell for an understandable - even relatable - reason when offered a potentially possible (albeit at least near-improbable) way out.

I think that sometimes we overlook the true tragedy of Amazon because we only view him as part of the prequels. The most insight to Anakin Skywalker is more embedded in the Clone Wars series of animation. IMHO the hardest blow to Snaking and a defining moment is when Ashoka Tano is blamed by the Jedi order for a crime she did not commit and her subsequent severing of her ties with the Jedi Order truly struck Anakin to his core , the seed of doubt taking firmer root in his mind. Ashoka meant so much to him and was essential to his development as a Jedi and his subsequent turn. I had always wondered why they did not give Anakin and Ashoka a chance at either a real relationship, or at least a deep friendship that gave Anakin a fighting chance to resist Palpatine's manipulation. And Lucas and now Disney cannot say it "couldn't happen" Think Legends and Darth Malgus and his Twilek lover. Same for Kanaan Jarrus and Hera. Ashoka would have been a phenomenal choice for Anakin as she is strong, intelligent and a great person all around. I personally wasn't happy with Padmae as she just was not a great fit and it's hard to explain.

Yeah. It is pretty weird that the Jedi are surprised by Anakin's entitled attitude, when they were the ones who identified him as the Chosen One in the first place. Not to mention, Anakin was 9 years old when he was given this information. How did they think he was going to react to it? Plus, if they really cared about keeping the Chosen One on their side, they would have done everything to keep him emotionally stable, rather than mold him into their ideal Jedi. For example, they could have freed his mother from slavery and let her live in the Jedi temple. That would have given Anakin some emotional stability, making him less vulnerable to Palpatine's manipulation.

While Anakin becoming a Sith Lord was excessive, his anger towards the Jedi had some justification. They constantly tried to mold him into one of them, when the reality was that he was different. He had already formed attachments and was very outspoken when it came to facing a problem, rather than contemplative and impartial, like the rest of the Council. Why didn’t Yoda or any of the Jedi in the previous Jedi Order ever try to change their ways, and make it more like Luke’s New Jedi Order? @liborohanka5010 Жыл бұрын
It's pretty complicated issues. Emotions and attachments can lead to dark side (and Jedi have some bad experience with their members turning to dark side). There is their philosophy, when they see themselves as extension of force, that follows it's will. (Basically tools). Also, (if I remember right) some light side abilities needs its user to be calm (so they are harder to use in battle) so not letting emotions get in way of your calmness is necessity and they could (mis) interpret it as Force being against emotions. There is probably more, but this is what I can think about now.

It doesn’t mean that murdering the kids was *okay* at all. Not to mention the fact that it wasn’t just about the “greater good” of the galaxy at that point, but Padme, too. Sure, he was told that, he convinced himself that, but in actuality, he was really just terrified. Anakin was a victim of abuse, conditioning/manipulation for subservience, oppression, and neglect with compromised agency his whole life, so I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s ALL his fault he ended up becoming Vader and remained that way for so many years. He also was raised in an environment where the emotional/psychological well-being and lives of both children and adults were treated as expendable “for the greater good” of the Jedi Order and Republic, regardless of their guilt or innocence. Additionally, considering the fact that the clones had already been programmed to kill the Jedi by Palpatine and Yoda and the Council had already screwed themselves over by attempting to commit treason against the head or the Senate on suspicion of him being a Sith without the rest of the Senate chamber’s knowledge, no matter who Anakin chose in that moment in Revenge of the Sith between Palpatine and Mace Windu, the Jedi would still be going down either way. It’s why I always find this fandom so hypocritical in regards to their thoughts on the morality of Anakin/Vader vs the Jedi adults of his time. Yeah, he committed more murder directly of innocents “for the greater good” than them, and the Empire/Sith technically were morally worse than the old Republic/Jedi Order. However, that whole “greater good” mantra for committing and/or enabling atrocities, murder, oppression, war crimes, and other human rights violations against anyone who got in the way of that, regardless of their guilt, innocence, age, creed, or race, is not something Anakin learned to do to be Darth Vader from JUST Sidious. It’s something he learned from Obi-Wan, Yoda, and his other superiors in the Jedi Order/Republic of his time, too. Sure, they weren’t as bad as the Sith/Empire, but ultimately, the adults of the overall old Jedi/Republic had been doing the same thing that Anakin/Vader had finally learned to do by the end of Revenge of the Sith. They all learned to slap on that “greater good” mantra as a band-aid to make themselves feel better about enabling and perpetuating horrible crimes and injustices that they knew were wrong out of fear of the unknown, a desire to hold on to security, a desire to avoid abandonment, and a desire to avoid conflict. The overall old Jedi Order and Republic had become too afraid to take a risk to do the right thing when all the odds seemed to be stacked against them. All the adults of the old Jedi Order/Republic became cowardly, in-denial, and selfish in their desperation and fear of the unknown. Anakin is the only one who gets any heat for it from most of this fandom because he became their enemy, though.

@@Schoolgirl325 Thanks for your well-thought-out and worded response. I agree, on the surface it seems like there's a clear difference between 'good and evil/right and wrong,' but a closer look at the "protagonists" and "antagonists" shows that such 'black and white' terms don't necessarily exist. Under either regime there were those who benefitted and those who suffered; neither stands as a perfect or complete system.

@@DJPach Yeah, there’s also the fact that Anakin Skywalker, at least in public, eventually learns to become much more like the Jedi of his time as Darth Vader after he gets put in that suit. In front of his enemies and his men, he becomes much more cold and emotionally detached as a weapon for Sidious and the Empire in service of their “greater good.” If he ever does show any sort of emotion in front of his enemies and/or men, it’s either anger, impatience, and/or hatred. He’s usually just being very apathetic about it, taking orders for Sidious, and serving their “greater good.” It’s this job that he hates, but convinced he has to do, both by Sidious and himself. Ironically, it’s actually kind of like how Obi Wan, Mace Windu, and the Jedi adults of his time usually reacted when committing murder of their enemies in combat. Little to no signs of hesitation or remorse, getting their job done quickly, don’t ask any questions about the motivations of potential enemies, threats or traitors, just kill them, justify it as “for the greater good,” and then move on. Yeah, occasionally, there would be some remorse and emotional compromise if they genuinely got attached to someone else, such as Obi Wan in regards to Qui Gonn and Anakin, and they weren’t going out of their way to murder anyone who refused to submit to their conquests like Sith,. However, the Jedi definitely didn’t have many problems with creating collateral damage for their “greater good,” and were way more okay with committing bloodshed than they should have been for “peacekeepers of the galaxy” whenever they deemed it necessary.
@Schoolgirl3252 жыл бұрын
@@DJPach It’s also ironic that Yoda was like “fear leads to the dark side.” Yep, it sure does, but you can’t just avoid that fear altogether, deny it’s existence, and/or try to get rid of it by knowingly doing morally wrong things to try to achieve worthy ends more easily and quickly. That’s what happened with Anakin, the overall Republic government, and the overall Jedi Order of his time, too. “Oh, we’re pro democracy and peace, except for when dealing with the outer rims, dangerous mission, or trying to avoid the dark side with our Jedi. Then, we conscript children to train them to be weapons for law enforcement, desensitize them to trauma and violence to be effective weapons, separate them from the outside world, forbid them from having close relationships and keeping in touch with their families, teach them that emotional expression, individuality, and personal freedoms are *wrong altogether,* get involved in war, pressure them into staying, and agree to use the clones as a slave army when asked by the Republic. “Oh, we’re not here to free slaves, and we don’t usually take in older recruits because they’ve known non-institutional love, anger, fear, and personal interests, and desire, which is risky if we train them in our way. However, we’ll free this one older child slave to take in as a Jedi, and train him in the exact same way we always have before because we need this kid as a weapon for war against the Sith, but we’re too afraid to admit our way could be wrong and make reforms. It’s kind of like with Anakin by the end of Revenge of the Sith. They wanted to have it both ways in the quickest and safest possible way, so they ended up becoming everything corrupt they set out to destroy to try to achieve that security in their fear and desperation under pressure because actually *doing* the right things by being honest, sticking up for themselves, and *pushing* for change would have been a lot riskier.

@@blackblack1167 'morals' are just man-made rules and constantly change throughout time. Remember 'slavery' was a regular way of life for thousands of years before things progressed and individuals were given more rights in law. We usually think of 'slavery' from the infamous 'Atlantic Slave Trade', when treatment of Africans by the greedy European slavers was horrendous. But 'Slavery' as a concept, worked in ancient times, when societies considered people of different 'ranks' and 'classes'. It was a guaranteed way for people of weaker families and lower ranks to attain basic security and living needs. They secured essential employment and formed a important layer of society. A slave from a poor family, owned by a very rich master might enjoy a life of relative luxury, tending his gardens or waiting on his large tables overladen with all kinds of luxury food. But slavery gradually became increasingly viewed as being unjust, as society evolved. Systems of law and governance allowed lower ranks of people to attain personal wealth, own land, and have rights and freedoms. It took centuries for things to change the world over. Perhaps that's what Lucas was reflecting also happens in the 'Star Wars' universe. Which is why slavery remains a thing in the backward, less developed corners of the galaxy. Such as on Tatooine.

@@mylesblake2026 to be fair, that's also the Jedi's fault, too because once you become a Jedi, you're no longer a civilian. You're a soldier either on a religious purge of the Sith or a soldier seeking to help the commoners. So, while those children didn't know what they were signing up to, they are still expendable because they're child soldiers, now. In that respect, they signed away their lives the moment they became a Jedi. Considering the way that the ins and outs of the Jedi Order are framed, their lives are no more important than any regular IRL soldier. If they didn't want any kids killed by former members of the Order, then maybe, *just maybe* the Jedi should've reconsidered forcing force-sensitive children to sign up to be Jedi the moment they are born. Although, I do admit that because he killed kids, Anakin's redemption is kinda...well, bullshit. Killing children is an irredeemable act and the fact that Luke redeemed him in spite of the fact that he killed children is downright disrespectful to the memory of those children, at best.

@@DoctorWhoKage I mean, this time period was when the Jedi needed the younglings the most. Well, no one forced Anakin to go and kill younglings. He could've sparred them. @@mylesblake2026 there was a person forcing him to purge the Jedi Temple, though: Palpatine. And he already surrendered to being his Sith apprentice after he stopped Mace Windu from committing a war crime, essentially. What Mace was about to do is essentially the Star Wars equivalent of a US Army general assassinating the US president based on an unfounded accusation against said president. Anyway, I remember hearing in Cinemawins' video on Revenge of the Sith that he did it because Darth Sidious implied that Anakin had to do horrible things to gain dark side power (more than he already had, at least).

@jodofe48793 жыл бұрын
True. Because he still wouldn't be ready. As Obi-Wan tried to tell Anakin several times, being a Jedi master isn't just about power and lightsabers or being crazily skilled with the force. It isn't just a reward you get for doing something for the Order. Being a Jedi master is about being part of a greater whole. It is about achieving a higher spiritual state where you can let go of your fears and attachments to the material world. Anakin, despite his skill with a lightsaber and his power with the force, was also full of fear and emotionally unstable. He most certainly was not yet ready to become a Jedi master.
@Schoolgirl3252 жыл бұрын
To be fair, while Anakin was morally wrong to participate in Palpatine’s crimes against the Jedi Order, either way he chose in that pivotal moment of RotS, the Jedi Order was still going down, and not all because of him. Yoda and Mace Windu had decided to commit treason against the Chancellor of the Senate and the rest of the Council followed their orders because they were too afraid to tell the Senate chamber that they suspected Palpatine was a Sith Lord. Not to mention the fact that Palpatine and Dooku had already programmed all the chips of the clones to execute Order 66, anyway. Either way he chose, the ultimate downfall and genocide of the Jedi Order and the Republic was going to happen in the prequels, and it wasn’t all because of Anakin. Even without him turning on the Order, or Palpatine at that point in Revenge of the Sith, the Jedi Order and Republic were going to go down at that point. The Jedi Council, particularly Yoda, had already shot themselves in the foot by alternating between doing the biddings of a corrupt and hypocritical Republic when it benefitted them and keeping secrets from it altogether when dealing with the Sith. They wanted to have it both ways in the safest possible way, and ended up destroying themselves and contributing to the destruction of the galaxy as a result. Then, why have Anakin fall to the dark side at all? To connect back to his sacrifice in ROTJ of killing Palpatine to save Luke, and to explain why he had such a hard time believing he had or deserved a choice to do better under Palpatine as his attack dog/murder slave in the OT movies until Luke came along. I don’t think the point was that he should be wholly absolved for his crimes because we see that Anakin did have a conscience, a selfish side, and stop trying after going dark too until Luke came along. However, the prequels explain why he became Vader, explain why he learned to see himself as nothing but a compliant tool or weapon to abusive, corrupt, manipulative, and oppressive authority figures. They explain why he could learn to justify doing horrible things with that whole “greater good” mantra to compartmentalize his guilt in his fear and self-loathing under oppressive authority using him for their own ends when all the odds seemed to be against him.

Honestly, it's surprising that there are any Jedi who follow the order's rules, at all. "Let go of everything you're afraid to lose," Yoda says in response to Anakin telling him of his visions of someone he loves losing their life. That sort of rhetoric is bound to screw with people (psychologically), and make them feel that their natural emotions are evil, and need to be suppressed. Might as well tell all the new padawans that they're no longer human, but soulless machines that do only what the masters tell them. This kind of shit is why the Grey Jedi are the only of the 3 "factions" (for lack of a better word) that make any sort of rational sense. The Sith let their emotions rule them, the Jedi attempt to turn theirs off, but the Grey seek balance between the two. How many times, over the course of the 9 movies currently out, do we hear about a need to "bring balance to the force"? Well, balance doesn't mean that the light-side rules everything. That isn't balance...except to a Jedi.
@MrZackavelli Жыл бұрын
1) If Anakin had just followed Yoda's advice and actually let go of his paranoia, he wouldn't have let Palpatine get into his head, he wouldn't have fell to the dark side, and Padme would've been just fine. Basically, if Anakin just listened to Yoda, then Anakin would've had a happily ever after. 2) Balance absolutely *does* mean that the light side rules everything. This is straight out of the mouth of George Lucas. The Sith throw the Force out of balance, thus balance is restored when Anakin destroys Sidious.

Let's also not forget that this really does also extend into the OT. Even after the fall of the Jedi order, Obi and Yoda still conspire to manipulate and deceive Luke into doing their dirty work. Obi insists and goads Luke into coming with him despite his protests. He preys on Luke's grief of the loss of his family to convince him to go with him rather than letting him go his own way. They actively deceive him and try to trick him into patricide rather than coming clean about the situation. When Luke leaves to go after Vader at Cloud City, they give him up for dead and/or falling to the dark side before he's even left the planet. They're actively considering pulling the same stunt with his sister despite the same failures over and over. Luke is the only one that even has the thought of redemption for Vader at all. Even after Luke loses his hand and is recovered by the rest of the group, Obi still refuses to even speak to Luke. He refuses to own up at all to what they did and it's only after all that went sideways then Luke forgiving that he returns to Degobah. Only then do they own up to the deception and Obi pans that "from a certain point of view" line to excuse him outright lying to Luke about it. The betrayals to Anikin run so far past him all the way to the end.

@thewarner21394 жыл бұрын
Obi-Wan didn't get a seat on the council for killing Maul. He was promoted to knight, but didn't get on the council until sometime in between TPM and TCW. As for Anakin, he didn't possess the emotional maturity or humility that a Jedi Master needed. The Council also knew that Anakin wanted the position, but they didn't want to show weakness to Palpatine, who personally requested Anakin's appointment, and was an active suspect in their investigation to find the Sith. They were caught between a rock and a hard place, so they compromised and still got crushed.

@@Charlie94781 yea but you’re telling me there was no manipulating by Dumbledore to make harry his martyr? He knew Harry had to die the WHOLE time and said absolutely nothing! Dumbledore did EVERYTHING to ensure Harry would die at the perfect time.

Its possible quigon did mean to go back and free her during a future mission where the force would just end up on tat.. but he was taken from the universe before it happened. I could see a good way of making anakin feel at ease is sticking his mother on naboo, surely the queen would feel indebted to anakin and his family for his actions and find a nice place for anakin's mother to live free, and though Quigon wouldn't encourage visiting i feel like they'd get updates on how she was doing to keep his mind at ease. Of course we know Quigon would've been the father figure anakin needed had he not passed its possible he wouldn't have missed his mother as much knowing she was free/happy and quigons attention was focused upon him. Its also possible a Dooku who falls from the jedi would meet a more accepting jedi like quigon and discuss what was going to happen.... lots of events would've changed imo.

I remember that TV show "Castle" episode where a mother fakes her daughter's kidnapping (she was actually with her sister), and pays the "ransom" demand to a separate account for herself, all to make her husband look like an unfit parent. She did this because she worked 14-hour days while he worked on paintings that never sold, and his parenting style was to sit their daughter in front of the TV while he was in the other room with the door shut and his ipod on. When asked why she could hate him so much, she told him "You made it easy." That to me sums up how Anakin's turning to the dark side happened so quickly in Episode III.

Just stumbled across this video. It reminds me of an idea I had for a book loosely titled "The Trial of Anakin Skywalker" where after Anakin ascended to becoming one with the Force, there are those who are there who believe him unworthy of such a gift. What follows is a kind of trial where both his mistakes and the Jedi's are aired out. Ironically, Anakin's defense attorney would have been a Sith Lord like Darth Bane or Nihilist, and the argument you just made would have been what decided in his favor that he was worthy.

Mace Windu: "We are the protectors of the peace. Not soldiers." (scoff) Yeah right. Tell that to all the innocent people you killed, especially those who were supposedly 'tainted' by the darkside.

Ahsoka sentence would of broke me too. The fact the JEDI who are all about compromise and peace suddenly go completely 180 would of shown me they are arrogant and refuse to open their eyes to the world around them.
