It's one thing for Anakin's (or Luke's) brain to learn to control a mechanical hand or arm that has replaced a pre-existing limb... or even for Anakin to learn to control multiple replacement limbs in fairly short order (having had some prior experience adapting to them). But for a brain to learn how to control limbs that it never had before, or to maneuver them in ways that the old ones could not (like rapidly rotating one's wrists 360 degrees hundreds of times) seems several orders of magnitude more difficult. Something tells me Grievous had some cybernetic brain augmentation when he got his new body.

I really don't mind the Midichlorians. They actually make sense in a pseudo-science way and they're essentially the Force version of mitochondria. The problem comes with the idea Qui-Gon got caught up in - A high Midi count MUST equal an equally high power level and so an equally high destiny. But just like with anything, those who train and work hard (Obi-Wan) can beat those with natural talent who skirt by doing just enough (Anakin) while those who have massive of natural talent and the work ethic of someone who doesn't can reach practically any level they want (Legends Luke)

One thing that does bother me about this discussion is how a lot of people demonise talent as a bad thing and even treat talented people as winners only because of talent and nothing else. But it seems that talented people have to work (some work harder than others). I don't know if you know or not but there have been those kids who get degrees at less than 10 years and l've often thought of the kind of pressure they must have to go through. Are they doing what they want or are they forced to live someone else's dream and everyone just expects them to pass and assume they don't work hard because their "talented". On the other hand some talented people become lazy and other less talented people surpass them through hard work and raise themselves to greater heights and surpass the lazy. All in all it seems to have to do with pride as the top treat the bottoms as trash and the bottom hate the ones at the top. I also think talent is a product of hardwork instead of the "hardwork beats talent when talent doesn't work hard". Like, why must they fight? Why can't they work together? So it is a bit of a two sides of the same coin type of deal. Side note: l do think natural aptitude would be a better word than talent. And through hard work and passion our natural aptitude can improve and reach success. I also realised just how close l am to saying the sith code but this post is already long enough.

@@thirdplanet4471 Thank you and I pretty much agree with everything you've said. For me, there is always a little "it" that natural aptitude provides that pure hard work and drive doesn't. Maybe it's instinctively known how much force to put before a throw, maybe it's having the instincts to know when to zig instead of zagging. Whatever "it" is, it allows people the chance to reach the very pinnacle of what they're good at. But only if they put the effort and hard work in to do everything else. In really simple terms, Anakin was that kid at 11 who had the body of a 16-year-old and so could physically outperform the others. He never had to worry about finesse with the Force because he could brute force it. But that really only takes you so far. I'm always reminded of a story I heard about a highly talented Basketball player at LSU (don't ask me the names, I've never remember them even though I always remembered the story). His teammates all knew that he was the best on the team and could easily make it into the top levels of the NBA but he had a nickname among the squad - "Just Enough." He'd show up and do just enough for training, never any more. He'd work hard but only just enough to get on the team. Players with less natural 'talent' than him became much better and went on to have solid careers while he drifted through life. He never did what he had to to make the spark that put him above his peers actually mean something. Instead, he used it as a reason not to work as hard as they did for the results they all wanted.

Uhhhhh Plo Koon was one of the most powerful masters on the council, and definitely upper echelon historically. Much higher than Jedi Knight level. You also need to make a distinction between force potential and force sensitivity. An individual like Kenobi was considered to have a lower than average count for an elite Jedi, but had an extremely honed sensitivity.

Let me explain Midichlorians in it's basics. Get ready for Star Wars Health Class 101. You have Midichlorians. We all do. Midichlorians are what essentially make the Force what it is. Ben Kenobi told us so. It's an energy field surrounding all living creatures. It's not a super power some gifted few have. The higher the Midichlorians the EASIER the Force is to use. So anybody can use the force in some way. It's just much much much easier for a Jedi like Luke Skywalker to do so and use more of the Force than say Chewbacca. And if you still hate them... It's fucking *FICTION* all of it.

This "argument" is very weak and basically boils down to: It doesn't exist therefore you have no right to care about it and it's applications to said fictional world. You're not defending the midichlorians in any way by saying this, all that you're stating is: Stop caring about fiction and don't attempt any form of criticism for the sole reason that it is part of a fictional universe. If i am understanding your 101 Class correctly. Nobody should have an opinion about something fictional if they don't like it? So, it is okay to like something fictional but you have an issue if someone doesn't like it? It is hard to argue/debate against feelings and emotions. This is why discourse to ascertain why people feel they way they do about things is a more productive endeavor. One can gain a perspective that they wouldn't have before, had they just dismissed the other's thoughts/feelings/opinions. For example: For those who grew up with only episodes 4-6, there were 22 years before the concept of midichlorians came around. This is a long time to fill in the gaps of a franchise that notoriously left things vague up to that point (on many subjects). 22 years to fill in the gaps as one's imagination allowed (or see legends universe). This created an investment into the thoughts and ideas one came up with or with the general idea already given of the Force being more of a mystical energy field of ambiguous nature. Then presumably, for many, the midichlorian revelation was a letdown and in a sense a rewrite/undoing. I don't see this as being a big thing, in general, for those who grew up with episodes 1-6 as they got the whole pie from the beginning. They probably didn't have the mental investment into that part of things since it was already explained. It is all about perspective.

The point of art, whether it is movies, music, paintings, etc is to illicit an emotional response, i.e. form an opinion of said media and take from it what you will. Many fictional things inspire people in great ways and give them strength in difficult times. You can't discount fiction when it becomes part of a society. Lightsabers are, with the only known exception being Darth Bane's lightsaber, extremely heavy. A lightsaber hilt can weigh anywhere between 3-5kg (6-11 lbs) according to George Lucas, around the weight of a standard medieval two-handed blade. A lightsaber shoto is the one-handed variant, which you see Ahsoka, Yoda and Ventress use, weighing roughly half as much and allowing the user to dual wield. The reason you don't see everyone in the Star Wars universe using a lightsaber, or possessing one for close quarters combat, is because lightsabers require a degree of Force sensitivity to wield effectively. Making it the weapon of Jedi and Sith respectively. All the weight is in the hilt, it has no point of balance beyond the hilt, making it impossible for the user to know where the blade is (increasing risk of injury), requiring extremely strong wrists to manoeuvre AND years if not decades of practice in a singular or various fighting style or Form. This is the reason Padawans often train deflecting blaster bolts while blindfolded isn't just to encourage them to use the Force and know the trajectory of the bolts, but to also encourage them to use the Force to 'feel' the plasma blade emitted.

Medieval swords aren't that heavy for the most part. Only the largest swords ever created are even close to that 12 pound mark,(but still not that heavy) and those are not meant for dueling or even hand to hand combat so much as breaking pike blocks, taking out horses legs and just creating a zone of death nobody wants to enter. 4 pounds is about the max for an every day carr y medieval sword. A lot of really large heavy swords are ceremonial wall hangers. Go try and swing a 10 pound bar around and you'll find out how difficult it is. Even when perfectly balanced.

A "standard" two handed medieval sword would weight between 1 to 1.5kg. Even the heaviest two handed sword of the 16th century, the Zweihänder, weighted between 2 to 4kg, and measured 140 to 210cm.

And just because the blade is weightless, that does not mean that you can't feel a force acted upon you when the blade hits you. If you fill a balloon with helium, that balloon is weightless, but you can still feel a force acting upon you if someone pushes that balloon into you. A big enough balloon can exert a force strong enough to lift you off the ground, and you would certainly feel it if it ran into you - despite it being weightless. You're trying too hard to apply our technology to the world of Star Wars, and it's inaccurate to do that. We don't know how exactly the lightsaber works. All we know is that it's beyond our technological capability. Just because you saw a youtuber make a big blow torch and call it a "lightsaber" because it looks like a lightsaber, that doesn't mean that's how a lightsaber would work in Star Wars. What we know about a lightsaber comes from what we see the lightsaber do, not from physics. You can't apply physics to an imaginary object in a world that defies our laws of physics. We see that the lightsabers very clearly do not just pass through each other, so we know that they blades would not pass through each other. We don't have to speculate about that.

Nah, Dooku would be in the 17,000 to 18,000 range. He was the Jedi Order's greatest prodigy until Anakin (the "Anakin before Anakin" as it were) He is just constantly underrated because Maul and Vader fanboys (plus dubious writing decisions in the prequels, regarding the treatment of Dooku's character) overshadow the praise (if any) Dooku tends to get in general. The only Jedi who could be considered on par with Dooku (until Anakin - and even then Dooku demonstrably kicked his ass about a dozen times in the Clone Wars before the gap closed and Dooku was beaten fully, even when he'd often have Obi Wan helping him) were Mace Windu and Yoda (cos, Yoda, nuff said) But the thing is, Dooku could be said to hold his own very well with Yoda. Dooku was Yoda's penultimate direct padawan before Cin Drallig (that is, prior to Luke Skywalker) Dooku was the star of the Jedi Order without even trying to be that hard, and tonnes of Jedi respected him, from Jocasta Nu to Ki Adi Mundi. He was one of their absolute finest in centuries if not millennia. Again, he is just badly underrated because he isn't as flashy or a raging, salivating freak when he is a Sith. He's a smooth operator and a master of lightsaber combat. I would accept that Dooku overcomes some of his own midichlorian limitations (compared to Yoda or Anakin) but I'd say he was absolutely on par with Mace Windu. In fact, Yoda couldn't have asked for two more equally balanced compatriots in the Jedi Order - Windu VS Dooku would be absolutely spectacular (and not the one sided stomp some seem to think it is; Dooku would _not_ play into Windu's fighting style and in a one on one Dooku's energy conservation and careful precision footwork and bladework, going up against the raw kinetic power of Windu and his far more aggressive and acutely ferocious style, would be fascinating) Yes, Dooku will struggle (in his advanced years) to generate the kinetic energy to meet Windu's frenzy, yet Dooku's own style is rather ideal to diffuse the main aim of Vaapad. Makashi can misdirect and redirect the entire fight onto the practitioner's terms, and _no_ practitioner was ever quite as good at Makashi as Dooku was. Just as Yoda exemplifies and embodies Ataru, just as Obi Wan came to be the consumate champion of Soresu, just as Anakin dominated in Djem So and just as Windu cornered the field on Vaapad, Makashi was Dooku's thing. Only Soresu would be better suited to handling the strategy of Vaapad, in terms of not giving the Vaapad user what he wanted (stonewalling it, Kenobi style) But due to the more dynamic attributes of Vaapad offensively, it would be harder for the Soresu master to counterattack with so much energy devoted to defence. Tiring the Vaapad user out would be the goal. But if this is Mace Windu we're talking about, good luck with that. Dooku VS Windu would be such a sight to behold. Dooku was the only other Jedi in the Order who beat Windu in sparring sessions, besides Yoda (now yes, Windu was far younger then, but so was Dooku) Neither would be spring chickens when rematching in the scenario where they fight in the Clone Wars. In a way, Dooku and Windu are in the same ''echelon'' or ''tier''. Dooku knows Windu's fighting qualities very well, and would not underestimate him or let him take advantage. They are absolutely on each other's level and absolutely masters of their preferred forms. Obi Wan constantly got picked apart by Dooku, though ironically I think Obi Wan would perform better VS Mace Windu. Mace would probably get the win via sheer overwhelming power, yet Obi Wan could deal with Windu's bladework for a prolonged time. Sidious arguably didn't ''lose'' to Windu, he was throwing the fight because he was counting on Anakin to witness and participate in the murder to fully implicate him and make him turn to the dark side. He was using his own life as bait. Windu failed as a Jedi the moment he tried to strike Sidious down anyway. He let his own passion for the Republic, blind him from the danger stood right next to him. Sidious knew that and preyed on it, betting his own life that Anakin would step in (to save Padme, more than himself) But that didn't matter. As soon as he "had him" that was that. No going back from Darth Vader (or so he thought) Dooku and Windu, in my opinion, are on par with Vader post-Mustafar in power and ability. Vader (mutilated and maimed) was always roughly 8/10 Palpatine's power after that. It makes Obi Wan's victory all the more telling, and impressive, because Vader's none mutilated full biomass potential, was meant to be literally twice Palpatine's if he kept on going. "Darth Vader will become more powerful than either of us!" - Sidious to Yoda, Episode III. What I find crazy about Sidious saying that, is how it basically confirms he was willing to risk making an apprentice go beyond himself (Sidious is strange in having a line up of apprentices and not seeming to conventionally follow the Rule of Two, outright intending to kill off Dooku it seems from the start) So, him of all people saying with assertive, smug pride, that Vader would go well beyond either himself or Yoda, to Yoda's face, is him openly admitting to Yoda it might kill him (Yoda knows what the Sith get up to and how they betray each other) For Sidious to even allow that chance of happening, makes it seem like he would rather die for the Sith Order than pass up on the chance of adding Anakin to it's ranks. It shows that even Palpatine put something before his own life, in my opinion. By even risking training Vader, knowing what might happen to himself, he at least had to think about the possibility of Vader killing him like he did to Plagueis. Sure, Sidious probably just wanted to try and control and manipulate Vader to make sure he survived, but if that went wrong he wouldn't be able to stop Vader and he must have known that full well. So it does imply that even Sidious was considering allowing himself to die for the greater good of the Sith. What happened to Vader was therefore bittersweet to him because he just resumed using someone less powerful than himself, but all the time he was using Vader as an Imperial enforcer, he was openly disappointed with him. It's why he was so eager to replace him with Luke (a carbon copy almost of Anakin in power, if not with the raw potential to go beyond) Makes you wonder about Sidious. Oh wait, sorry, how silly, REY is stronger than everyone and is the bestest force user everrr -.- something something ''diads'' something something emo Ren something something they fly now?

i love the concept of the midi-chlorians, don't know why people hate it so much, it does not take away the mystical aspects of the force, but adds to it, because it's not how much of it you have, it's how you use it. Anakin has a huge amount because he was a creation of the force itself to counter the growing darkness of Plagueis and Sidious, it always goes for balance, so, when light or dark go too far it acts to balance things again, that's why both Jedi and Sith are wrong, specially the Jedi, that talk about balance, but only go for light. The answer is the middle, it's ok to feel emotions, just don't let them drive your actions, you don't have to be an emotionless monk nor a psycopath, just live your life and use the force as another tool in your arsenal.

I think the idea of midichlorians is a lot better than the “anyone can be a Jedi” trope that The Last Jedi tried to push. That’s not the way the world works. Some people are born more smart or talented than others, but it depends on what you do with what you’re given. There’s heroes in the Star Wars universe without high midichlorians that still did great things and others like Anakin that had talent that he wasted. “Do the best you can with what you’re given” is a much more empowering and realistic message than “You can be anything you want to be”

Cuttlefish I do understand the criticism of the sort of eugenic idea that the Jedi’s superiority is inherited rather than earned. Although, in the days of the republic, the Jedi weren’t allowed to reproduce and there were still many new force sensitive children. I can see how the sequels could be perceived as nepotistic since they made Rey a Palpatine, but there was really no other way to explain her being so powerful with no training. It’s just the Star Wars universe. We may scoff at nepotism in our own world, but it’s easier for the audience to understand relationships when people are related. Like I feel like it made Rey more part of the story, which is centered around Skywalker and Palpatine, since she just appeared out of the blue and was the central character (with ZERO character flaws apparently but that’s another story🙄).

So I've always imagined the ability to control the force to be made of two things, your attunement to the force (Medichlorian count) which is like, natural talent, and then experience. Almost any jedi who would work hard enough could be able to do almost anything, for example. Obi-Wan Kenobi would be an example of that. He dedicated his life to facing Sith Lords and destroying huge amount of battle droids easily. His mastery of soresu was unparalleled amongst the jedi of his time, which would make him one of the best duelist. I like to believe that according to this fact, he could beat Dooku in a duel, or close to, at the end of the clone wars. The only reason he got bested was because Anakin sucks at team work.

I have watched that movie 6 times and zoned out each time when in the theater I noticed the floor needed cleaning covered in crushed popcorn and soda. In the house I noticed that the ewok needed brushing the little thing kept hitting me with a copstick he thinks is a spear soooo cute how dumb he is, when I finally got the last knot out of him I noticed the credits were finishing :/ Most recent time trying to watch it I noticed my carpet needed cleaning so I hoovered and washined it. ALL other times trying to watch it I think I must have fallen asleep as I do not remember much of it other than it annoying me.

Respect to mentioning Finn as a cut above the average sentient being in terms of Force-sensitivity, comfortably having about double the average count. After all, he was paraded on the cover of episode VII with a lightsaber yet is never overtly demonstrated as force-sensitive in any meaningful way in the sequel trilogy. Methinks JJ wanted to covertly throw a few bones Boyega's way in compensation for being sold short (particularly by Rian Johnson). Finn did more than fight well with a near-weightless weapon on first use. His knowledge of the workings of the First Order, and even more mysteriously, the Final Order, seriously outstrip his rank, duties, and his experience on active duty with the former entity, and are totally unexplainable regarding the latter entity. He suspiciously differentiated the presence vs absence of hidden emplacements on a ship class he was entirely unfamiliar with. If he isn't Force-sensitive, his behavior suggests innate genius-level spatial intelligence and mechanical intuition, potentially exceeding human history's top engineers in terms of his intuitions regarding the built environment, even giving Anakin's repair skills some competition! Being in the construction business I wish I had those "powers", regarding what's hidden behind some of these old walls, to instantaneously asses the scope of a renovation project!

I always interpreted the midichlorian count to be the opposite of conventional wisdom. Instead of it being the midichlorian count that determines your Force potential, I always thought it better to mean that your potential was your potential, and the midichlorians would be attracted to you in numbers commensurate with that potential.

I have wondered for a while, what happened to all of those in the service cores when order 66 came down? They would have been far more far flung, and integrated with the people of various worlds, than most of the Jedi. Also, while most of them would have been of lower power, surely there were some with higher counts that chose (or were called by the force) to enter one of the service cores, and did not seek to become full Jedi. They would have been little combat threat to the Sith, but they could have preserved a lot of knowledge from the order, and also they would represent force-sensitive gene lines from which more powerful sensitives could be born.

i always found the concept of midiclorians to be awsome, and i never understood why so much people hate them, for me, they are like the power levels in DBZ, something nice to see in the characters. i always liked statistics, besides, midiclorians dont determine how good a jedi you are, just your potential of learning.

@Logan Waltz they are not bacteria... specialy because bacterias tend to be bigger or the same size as cells (since they are themselfs, cells) midiclorians live inside the cells. here is the thing tough, before midiclorians, the force was mithical, the idea was that anyone can be a jedi, as long as the force decides that "they are worth it" this is a beautiful concept of course, but midiclorians do not take this concept away, as a matter of fact, they state it as a fact... we all have midiclorians, all of us... some of us have more than others, but they are inside everyone. the best way to explain "god" is by science... the laws of nature, god (in this case, the force) would create a set of rules in which the universe would exist, gravity, relativity... and, add to that... midiclorians... just because something is scientific, doesnt mean one cannot give a spritual meaning to it, specialy because Star Wars was always about a perfect mix between technology and spirituality.

The topic of midichlorians is quite interesting when we think about the dogmatic views of the Jedi. On the one hand, they recruit younglings with the highest midicholorian count, but on the other hand, they prohibit members from founding families and getting children. Luke and Leia established that a high midichlorian count can be passed from parents to children. Those three premisses are leading to a drain on the raw galactic midichlorian count over the cause of the "Golden Age" of the Jedi (from ~1000 BBC until Order 66) and generally through the millenia the Jedi Order existed. And this leads to an interesting conclusion: Is the destruction of the Jedi Order actually a good thing for the Force? In the short run, a lot of midichlorians are being destroyed due to the deaths of the most numerous inhabitors of them, but in the long run, the number of midichlorians in the general population is rising. Holding that thought, was Palpatine basically the Chosen One for the Dark Side, chosen by the Force to end the drain on midichlorians perpetrated by the Jedi? And while thinking about that, here is another interesting thing: The theme of the Force actually being protective of itself is also a part of some legends stories, most notably of the Yuuzhan Vong story arc: After committing great atrocities against all living things in their galaxy, the Yuuzhan Vong were "expelled" from the Force. They killed all and everything in their galaxy, being responsible for the destruction of a great many midichlorians. And unlike in "our" galaxy, attempts by the Force to counteract that destruction with Chosen Ones failed, so the Force left the Yuuzhan Vong as a last resort to protect itself. My take on the entire topic of force-potential being passed down the generations is, that many people are mistaking it as the only way midichlorians are being created. I'd rather say that it is "a" way, but that midichlorians are also just appearing randomly in people.

I view midichlorians as beings the ‘feed’ off the force energy of a living being. Of course, since the force is an outside source, it can’t be completely drained (I think). I believe mastery matters a lot in these cases. Anakin had pure and clear advantage of midichlorians, but Obi Wan matched with him not just in dueling skills, but even when they tried to force push eachother away. Thats more than just what form of lightsaber combat he used, its like arm wrestling. They were both able to give same power output

Well Anakin had the 501st with him, and though he did kill a lot of jedi, there couldn't have been that many in the temple (At this point it was the climax of the Clone Wars, so most jedi would be off-world or just returning from their missions). The jedi that did remain were likely to be less skilled ones, since most of the jedi council were killed or were off world, and of the remaining jedi a lot of them must have been padawans and younglings.
