great advice: "if it sounds good, it is good" (about not worrying the settings numbers)

Hey Michael, just want to say I really enjoy the videos. As a songwriter and home recording artist it's nice to hear someone dialing in guitar tones that are more akin to what I enjoy(not the usual high gain metal stuff that seems to be so prevalent in the modeling world) and getting those tones out of the stomp which I am a big fan of. I'll keep watching. Cheers!

Thanks! Yeah, I agree. There do seem to be more guys talking about modeling and impulse responses when it comes to high gain tones. I think modeling does a great job with those types of tones but it’s not my thing.

@@MichaelWWestbrook I struggle with getting good recorded tones im my apartment. I've tried over and over to mic amps, but I just can't get enough volume out of them to make them sound any better than my hx or native plugin. My Tonemaster deluxe gets pretty convincing even on the .2 watt setting and a 57 mic stuck in front of it. That's about as loud as I can go here. Even .5 watts shakes the walls and floor and that's not even a very dirty tone. So is micing an amp always your first go to for recording? Next year I will be able to mic up amps as we will finally be purchasing a house. Thanks again!
@MichaelWWestbrook4 жыл бұрын
At home my go to is using a Two Notes Captor. I can record amps at my house but I also have a family so the volume doesn’t always work. I’ve been really happy with using Cab IR’s this way. Mic’ing an amp is ideal but you can’t beat the ability to record any time and not have to worry about the volume!

In a live-setting you often have to «tune-in» your presets for that specific stage. Where do you start? Global EQ or in the amp/IR?
@MichaelWWestbrook4 жыл бұрын
If I’m playing a guitar with single coils I would start with my tone knob and/or input impedance. These are the easiest to change on the fly. After that I would change the IR’s if I’m not getting something I’m happy with. It depends on how far I’m off from my desired tone and what needs to change. Is it too bright when I dig in? Am I missing some bottom end or is it muddy? Each change affects everything in a slightly different way that might be more suitable depending on the situation!

How do you hook your Stomp into a DAW like Logic? If I try to run my board into my Apollo interface into Logic it always sounds real gain heavy and there’s a digital almost like slight modulation going on.

Hey Michael good advice, like what you've made and want to download them when I get my Stomp. Would you advise anything different when playing through headphones? Thanks
@MichaelWWestbrook4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! A lot of these tips would apply to headphones for sure! I’d also suggest turning up reverbs a touch and potentially adding a touch of low end/bass. Typically in a band setting you want to limit bass frequencies (and reverb for that matter) to help the overall mix and to avoid muddiness but if you’re playing by yourself you may want a touch more body and space. Does that make sense?
@josephreisz14234 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelWWestbrook Absolutely makes sense, thanks Michael!!!

Thank you for these tips. My question is...no matter what amp cab or amp ir, it still has this boxee sound. It like playing through a small cheap combo. In the global setting I messed with the mids. By turning it all the way down it seems to somewhat helped with that tone. I don’t know what to do. I hear all the videos and it sounds good but when it come to my set up I’m only getting frustrated. Thank you for your time.

There are a lot of variables. Be sure to check out some of my other videos for other tips. The one on amp controls might be helpful for you.

At the opening of the video you are playing a Dual Amp preset. I went to your site, and noticed that it is not in your preset pack or bundle. Is it available somewhere?

It’s in the pack! I think it’s number 3 on the list.

@@MichaelWWestbrook Bought the preset pack, and really like it a lot. I am a noobie with IRs, and of course I messed up and was stuck for a while. I loaded a preset BEFORE loading the IRs, and then when I loaded them, I couldn't get any sound out of the preset until I reloaded it. You live and you learn. Anyway, thanks for the great presets. They will serve as building blocks for some of the stuff I will be using once the quarantine is over..

Is that a Royal T in the neck of your Tele or something else?

Scott Corgan Fralin 5% overwound. A touch hotter and darker than their typical Tele pickup. It helps it balance with my other guitars better

I haven’t had a chance to test them as I’ve been out of town but they will be updated in the next week or two! I’m also hoping to make use of some of the extra blocks to dial them even more.

The presets that come installed have way to much distortion on them so the first thing to do is knock them back to almost minimum.
