I'm an advanced minimalist and don't have much left to declutter, so I've been tempted to get rid of necessities. I fortunately just reread the book "Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending", and found a quote to refocus my priorities: "How you use your time is more deeply connected with your sense of self than material possessions." Whoa.

The minimalist mum said something that I found really helpful “if it’s not a definite yes, then it’s a no” I think this is great not only for decluttering what you already own, but also when buying something new. Also having a box all the time that is a donation box, so once you have decided to declutter something it is dealt with there and then, no going back over it and second guessing yourself!

My favorite question when in doubt with stuff is: "if this got lost/burnt in a fire/stolen, would I buy it again? if no, let it go. you don't really need it.

I recently donated my washing machine, refrigerator and Television since they were continously consuming electricity. Now I feel so happy to wash my clothes and eat fresh food.

Congratulations on being television-free. I haven't had a television in years and I don't miss it at all. I especially don't miss the news, which was overall negative. You mentioned getting rid of your washing machine. I'm trying to reduce my dependence on electricity in order to live off the grid one day, so eventually that needs to go as well. I've been looking into the Scrubba wash bag as an alternative. What do you use, if I may ask?

@rowan orre I looked up the brand and it definitely looks interesting. However, right now I would prefer something portable.

Something I committed to this year was that I could only buy new stuff (generally pieces to refine my minimalist capsule wardrobe) if I could cover the costs through selling my existing stuff (that I wanted to declutter). Usually that mean selling 3-6 things to purchase the one item. So I haven't used any of my regular income to buy stuff in 2021. Only the money I've made from the possessions I've decluttered. Most I sold on Facebook Marketplace - a mix of decor, clothing, kitchen stuff, exercise equipment, etc...

Love your personality and advice. I have a long way to go in my minimalism journey, but I appreciate the time it takes. It allows me to truly know what I do and do not need. If I decluttered mindlessly without actually thinking about what I’m doing or where my stuff will be going when I’m done with it, I feel like I wouldn’t appreciate the minimalist lifestyle as much.

Minimalism is not a competition. I see a lot of creators really "bragging" about how little they own.

I actually see more and more ‘minimalist’ creators make a case for ‘minimalism is whatever you think it is’. You can own a huge house, 2 cars and a closet full of clothes as long as you feel you need them, that kind of thing. I thing there is a middle way. Where we don’t derive ego boosts from showing off how little we own, but where we do push ourselves to be critical of how much we consume. Let’s not forget that the majority of KZbin is people showing off how MUCH they have (Louis Vuitton hauls, etc, etc)…

Thanks for the reminder that I don't always have to get rid of the things right away and can first try living without them for a while to test it... Was just recently decluttering my wardrobe and I am so unhappy about the amount of t-shirts I own, but simultaniously I really like all of them... or so I think. I might hide a couple and see what happens. PS: Love your videos, they are such a breath of fresh air. So calming, yet inspiring and thought provoking.

This is truly a spectacular video! So very thoughtful. I appreciate your channel, and the deeper topics you bring up about the minimalism lifestyle. One of the things that has helped me and helps me, is paying attention to what I actually use on a daily basis. When I find things that I keep passing over time and again, it goes on my clutter radar, even if I really like the item. I find joy and gratitude in the things that serve me and are useful, which helps me to let go easily of things that are not being used. When I began this journey, I went through a time of I might need this or that, and felt it was hard to let go of items. However, overtime, I feel like my discriminating faculties with stuff has gotten better and easier, and I enjoy the outcome of better flow and space.
