Fire and water: mortal enemies? Not so fast! Here are 5 ways to start a fire, using water.
I figured out how to make fire and water work together. My friends at Volkswagen, who made this video possible, figured out a way to make a German-engineered car, that's a blast to drive, also a smart choice.
Some quick links to a few of the materials I used:
[✓] Pom juice: amzn.to/2cDA78J
[✓] Saran wrap plastic wrap: amzn.to/2cVdDwE
[✓] Sodium metal: amzn.to/2ctSHi5

WARNING:
Under certain conditions, an open flame can grow to an uncontrollable, blazing fire. This may result in serious injury, burns, property damage, forrest fires, grass fires, and even death. Use of video content is at own risk.

Project Inspired By:
My own creative adaptations to previous projects, and the picture frame lens was inspired by www.greenpowerscience.com with their Aqua lens video: • Free Energy solar Gian...
Projects & pictures that inspired this video:
#1: Original idea adaptation after experimenting with water bottles
#2: Original idea adaptation after experimenting with water bottles (I also demonstrated this method with urine in another video: goo.gl/CIUGRl#3: GreenPowerScience • Free Energy solar Gian...
#4: Original idea adaptation from experimenting with water bottles, and looking for a bottle shaped like a sphere. The POM bottles are perfect!
#5: Original idea after experimenting with the reactions between water and sodium metal in a previous video: goo.gl/AhD0lQ
Project History & More Info:
In this video you'll see how to;
- Start a fire using an old light bulb and water
- Get tinder smoldering using plastic wrap and water
- Make a hands free liquid lens with a picture frame and plastic wrap
- Ignite tinder using a water bottle
- Start a blazing fire by reacting water and sodium
I love the idea that simple resources can be utilized to help meet our basic survival needs. Water is about as basic and abundant as it gets. To use it as a liquid lens you just need to find a way to make it round, clear, and hope for a sunny day! Then, your imagination is the only limitation. :)

The problem with this is... Really, this only shows two ways to start a fire with water. 1. Create a lens by using water and a clear substance to focus light on the tinder. 2. Mix water and sodium to cause an explosive exothermic reaction.

IrvineCascade Then what is the problem with the video he shows is water. If you want to learn how to start fire different ways their are other videos. He is just showing what you can use with water in this video.

Sistik123 ... You missed the whole point of my comment. This video is called "5 Ways to Start Fire using Water;" however, if you want to get technical, it only showed two ways to start a fire using water (as I explained). I can think of a couple of other ways, but they follow the same base design: create a lens using water, or create an exothermic reaction using water... At least one of those ways creates a green flame! :3

CAUTION - Just a handful of sodium and enough water can create a HUGE explosion! I know - a friend of mine use to steal pure sodium from his parents who were chemist/lab workers. We would fill up a sandwich bag with it and put it in a jar and close the top. We would then throw it out into the river and start throwing rocks at it. Once we hit it and broke the jar we would run like mad for cover. In about 15-30 seconds there would be a huge explosion, as loud as a civil war cannon and you could actually feel the blast (I'm not kidding). Judging from the noise level, I would guess that If you had had it in your hand it might of blown it off. I'm surprised that they only offer an average bit of caution here about it - it's extremely dangerous to work with it around water.

Curious: You say use warm water. Will it not work with cold water? If not why?
@natusetiam
@natusetiam 9 жыл бұрын
Cold water is denser, making it harder for the light to make it through. Scientific explenation: The light takes longer to make it through dense substances, giving it enough time to loose it's energy, from both emitting light and warming the substance slightly, depending on how much substance there is.

It's not really using water though, you're using the water like a focusing lens and not the water itself, so it's in fact 4 ways to light a fire with the sun using water. The 5th way is pretty much the only one using water, but again it's more using sodium with water as the starter.

Nice job on the video, but it is funny that you put the fire in between you and the safety equipment.

That Sodium option looks pretty cool for the size/weight:BTU ratio (great for camping kit wtc... But... where does one find the casually mentioned "chunks of sodium" Gotta think if the stuff its that flammable/dangerous tat it would be tough to come by no??

bright sunny winters day yep and that would account for 1 quater of the year and is not the only reason people have fires lol.u only cook at night then i presume or would opt for no fire on a cold day out in the bush.may have been soaking wet and need to dry out quick before night falls. man there are many scenario's as to why u /we NEED a fire whether its day night summer or winter...simply having the knowledge to make it as and when u need it is the key.

Where do you buy the small pieces of sodium. Is that tablet shaped salt?
