The Return of the Undead is curiously well written (imho) with descriptions creating clear images from the main characters point of view. A very good listen and a very good reading performance that put me right into the story as if I was there (it helped that I listened to it at night with the lights turned off).

Some of these I have never heard of before, THANKS! For instance, imagine battling morphine addiction (I wonder if the guy managed it) -- only to become a vampire! From addiction to drug to addiction to blood. An extraordinarily odd tale, that! And followed by the wonderful story of the cloth-headed tourists - "how strange, these guys hate garlic and don't like crosses, very odd but they no accounting for foreign ways"... Just, lots of FUN!
@josephskiles3 жыл бұрын
Vampirism has been used as a metaphor for drug addiction often actually, it was an extremely popular trend in the movies of the 80's for example. I have always found it facinating that the subject can be used to explore everything from sexuality to diseases to Evan the cycle of child abuse turning victims into monsters themselves that abuse others. Too many people fail to look deeper into the things horror stories have to say about our experiences in life.

@@carolrios9216 I'm glad you found value in my comment. There is a really good movie from the 70's called Lamora ( I think KZbin even has it for free) the explores this angle really well while also borrowing heavily from Lovecraft's shadow over innsmouth . I really do find it amazing how many metaphors it can be used for, the only thing I can think that even comes close are maybe how ghosts or aliens are used to tell various tales though I still think the vampire has even them beat. Anyhow thanks again for your comment!

Wonderful selection of vampire tales. "The Return of the Undead" brought to mind the campy, comedic 80's b-movie horror classics Return of the Living Dead and Return of the Living Dead II. Leed's tale is a standout here along w/Davidson's "Vampire Village". But then, all of these stories "suck". Excellent again HorrorBabble. "Brotherhood of Blood" is another standout. Re: "The Return of the Undead", I awoke way too early this morning w/the realization that the title is a bit of foreshadowing related to the protagonist's (SPOILER:) horrifying, completely buzz-killing realization that his super-happy ending is in fact the beginning of his personal experience as a neophyte blood-sucker and that one addiction has been replaced by another acutely less desirable? Finally, is it too much of a stretch to believe that the protagonist's morphine-seeking behaviors were included not just as a device to set-up certain parts of the story but also as an analogy to the overpowering blood-seeking compulsion shared by all vampires?

I'm not usually a vampire fan, but these tales are unusually well done. These vampires and other characters are delightfully evil and flawed. I can't stand "Twilight" or "Anne Rice" type of vampire stories. Vampires should be totally evil with no redeeming qualities. They should not be high school kids with human friends or good guys only feeding on animal blood with human partners that hunt down all manner of evil beings. These tales hit the mark just right. The narrators are exceptionally good. They add an additional level of "creepy" to already terrifying stories. Thanks for the uploads. 💀💀👺👺👍👍🧛🧛

Agree re: both these HorrorBabble adaptations and Twilight but as I recall, a significant population of the vampires depicted in the Anne Rice novels are quite evil, at times delightfully so, and deeply flawed indeed.

The only Vampire stuff that I love is all these Horrorbabble shorts stories, Bram Stoker's Dracula, which I read at least once a year, and my guilty pleasure, Tru Blood, but those vamps would. kick the shit out of Twilight Vamps or Anne Rice Vamps. I've read the True Blood books and they are good, quick reads, but the show, especially those first 4 seasons, really kicks ass

@@kevinheath7588 Honestly I don't remember if in this story they used miles as a speed or distance, and I guess when talking about geographic distance miles are used. I lived in Yorkshire and Scotland, and as an American, it was jarring to hear and took me out of the story. Since I don't remember, I'll split it with you. Miles? Fine. Dollars is a silly slip.

@@Crossword131 Happy to split the difference with you...thumbs up for miles and down for dollars. I do agree with your general point a story needs an ambiance an atmosphere, and that is in large part created by the terminology used by the author and has to be at least a little accurate for the story to be believable. Sorry I know you know all this, basically just saying I understand your point and it's not a frivolous one :-)
