I am 56 years old and have yet to reach menopause, but about 6 years ago I was on my way home from the grocery and I noticed something in the left side of my vision. Then the bright, flashing zigzag moved across my field of vision. Afterwards I had a headache and felt a little queasy. Had an eye appointment coming up so I waited until then to ask about it. I just knew that I had something terribly wrong. Thankfully he said it was nothing serious and I have had at least 4 or 5 a year since then. Doggone menopause! Causes all kinds of crazy crap! Among many different symptoms I had, very watery eyes was one of them. I even had people come up to me and ask me if I was ok cause it literally looked like I was crying. Went to my doctor to find out I had a partially separated retina. While after two years the floaters have minimized they are still there but I’ve blocked out all but one pesky one that’s right in the line of sight. When it detached it sheared off some blood vessels and looked like I was seeing through a thick cloud of flying insects. The internal bleeding happened several times and then I also lost pigment from this in that eye so I have a permanent blurry spot in my vision that looks like a thick smudge on my glasses as well as a clump of permanent black dots. Then it was if a veil appeared over my vision and the squiggly lines. I also have dry eyes and blepharitis! I had cataract surgery last year. It was a very easy surgery, rest assured, takes about 10 minutes! I had them for about 10 years. I have 20/20 vision now. Find a good surgeon that you trust, and you will be fine. It is so routine; you would be shocked. You see right after and can go back to work the next day with a few limitations. I was freaked out about it those 10 years, but it really was totally fine! Is that why I have ocular migraines? They did start within the past 10 years. I guess I feel better knowing it's sort of common. I also have those vision changes. Some days I can see fine with my glasses, others not so much. I've been complaining about dry eyes for years, and had to stop wearing contacts due to it. Luckily my eye doctor did let me know it's common in peri and drops help somewhat. Yes to the ice pick headaches. Not often, but at least now I'm less concerned. And I've had a cataract in my left eye since my mid-40s and my right eye a couple years later. I thought something was seriously wrong with me when I could see a distinct color change when looking at things with one eye or the other before I knew what that was. Kari Anne, your videos are a life saver for me - I no longer feel alone or crazy! And I love your hilarious re-enactments! I definitely have all the menopause things…and I can’t do HRT because I’m a breast cancer patient. My eyes have been a mess with all the stuff you listed. I ended up getting cataract surgery at 52 and can share all the details with you if you want. My eyes were perfect at 51…I barely ever even used reading glasses, but over the course of just one year, I got a rapidly developing cataract in both eyes and could barely see! The doctor said it can sometimes happen as a side effect of some medications but nothing I’m on was on the list. Go figure. Maybe it was the oral minoxidil I started taking for hair loss around that time but they didn’t think it was that either. The surgeries went fine according to the doctor but I’ve been suffering with some stuff ever since that I wasn’t aware could happen. But I have never personally known anyone else experiencing what I experienced. So even though I’m bummed I have some annoying after effects to deal with, I can still see way better than I could with the cataracts so I’m glad I did it.

I'm 59. 6 yrs post menopausal. I have dry eye, flashes of light (PVD), starting of cataracts, far-sightedness, presbyopia, and Fuch's Dystrophy. My eyes are the main reason I decided to start bioidentical hormone replacement therapy earlier this year. I wish I had started it years ago but didn't realize all the benefits of bHRT until I researched it. It helps to reverse brain fog, increases energy, prevents osteoporosis, prevents cardiovascular disease, and helps to prevent Alzheimer's Disease. It helps with the skin, reduce inflammation in the body, preserve muscle mass, decreases risk of mortality, and so many other things. There was a misconception years ago from the WHI Study with regards to increased risk of cancer -- there are no bad side effects with bioidentical HRT. Any side effects were due to synthetic hormones. I'm taking transdermal bioidentical estradiol, bioidentical progesterone (Premetrium), and compounded bioidentical DHEA/Testosterone. I feel so much better than I did last year. I will take it for the rest of my life.

I'm 48, suffering from extreme changes in my sight throughout the month. From time to time have icepick pain. But the worst for more than a year is having dry eyes, and is the horrible feeling of having like shards of glass inside when you're waking up but they just won't open 😣😢

Kari..thank you so much for this video. My eyesight has been really worrying me. I have recently heard of and watched a vlog hosting a neuroscientist Dr Lisa Mosconi. All about the brain and menopause. Very informative and very helpful.

Perfect timing! When I hit late stage peri a couple of years ago, I needed prescription reading glasses and drops for dryness. Now I'm noticing two other changes. One you mentioned in your video. My eyesight seems to change throughout the day! There are times when everything is perfectly crisp and clear. Other times, things seem dull to me. I thought it was just my imagination. I think it has to do with how much I'm straining my eyes. The other symptom that I'm noticing is that it takes me a few minutes to adjust when I walk into a room that is dimly lit. I can't read at all in dim lighting, and I hate going to stores that aren't brightly lit. My doctor told me that this is all normal. It's just part of the process of aging, but it still stinks. My mom just had cataract surgery. She loves it! She's sorry that she didn't do it sooner. Her vision is much improved and she now only wears glasses for reading. Don't worry about the cataracts. It's a very common thing.

Thanks. I’ll try not to worry.

Thank you so much for this video!!! I have been wondering what was going with my eyes whenever I have a sharp pain in it. I was thinking I was stressing out and I needed to relax. Never thought that "the change" had anything to do with it. I do have regular migraines from time to time, but I just recently started having the sharp pains in the eye. Everyday I'm learning something else about this body of mine and the retirement party that my hormones are having at the moment. 😫

I have torn my cornea by just waking up in the morning and opening my eyes. My eye doctor calls it a “map dot fingerprint”, and it is PAINFUL! I have it happen to me at least 4 times over the past 3 years - and yes, the doctor says collagen helps. Also, I’m developing cataracts which is actually making my vision better because of how the light is refracted in my eyes! My eye doctor says studies have shown that vitamin C can help slow the growth, so I’ve added that as a supplement.
@KariAnneWright5 ай бұрын
Yes tearing a patch off my eye was very painful and I honestly thought I was losing my sight in that eye. I was terrified. I’ll look into vitamin c. Thanks for the tip.

Yep, I am starting to have all of those issues except the cataracts. I used to have 20/13 vision in both eyes (pretty much fighter pilot vision), and now I struggle to see the smaller road signs. And my night vision is definitely worse - I used to be able to see quite well in the dark. I get the ocular migraines - mine are very zigzaggy.

I’ve had 5-6 ocular migraine episodes. I got so scared at first. When I was reading I couldn’t see some letters just like you described having a fuzzy spot where I was looking. Then I saw neon color zigzag flashing lines on top of my field of vision when I closed my eyes. I thought it was my blood pressure but my eye doctor explained it was an ocular migraine and had nothing to do with the actual eye.

Hi there, I can relate it to myself for eye jabs or ice pick headaches, as you mentioned. They are not headaches but like a shot in an eye. When I started having them, I started wondering what it is. I thought may be it was due to longer exposure to screen and give my eyes some rest. But now that you tell this, I can understand why they are around. Also I had perfect vision a couple of years before and I suddenly cannot read without specs. Gosh! what a rapid change ...

Has anyone noticed a mild swelling or bulging of eyeball ( with pain of course) when the arual migraine attack hits? My left eyeball has a bulge when that happens along with a hazy spot on the left side of my vision. All reports are normal including a brain MRI

Have you had your eye pressure checked? A bulge would be concerning. I’m sorry you’re dealing with that.

Yes, I was diagnosed with fast growing cataracts about 3 years ago. I'm going in for surgery next week - I am at the place where I'm unable to drive safely after dark. I just turned 62. I was told the other eye qualified for surgery but since I still able to use corrective lenses to get workable vision, to wait for surgery in that eye. I've had migraine since puberty but they changed in menopause. Before they were hours long and it's learned how to mitigate them. Migraines now last days long and I'm still experimenting to find what I can do to handle them. I am on BHRT, and have been for 5-6 years. When I finally got my BHRT dosing right, my migraines became almost non-existent..... thank the good Lord!!!

I have occular migraines sinds I was 14 or so. They doesn't come often. I see zigzags and they last for 15 minutes or so, and I'm extremly tired after that. Very weird. No headaches. I do have dry eyes and did see a eyedocter two months ago. I have now also eyedrops to use. It helps a bit, but I still see spots sometimes, or blurriness.

Oh yes!!! I am forever squinting with my glasses on! Nighttime is even worse. I use collagen daily but still need eyedrops (I also live in az mountains so that doesn’t help) my ocular migraines started about 6 years ago out of nowhere. I thought I was having a stroke bc I had the weird flashing thing and lost some peripheral vision in one eye. Eye dr checked everything and said always get it checked bc he did find one woman was actually having a stroke. The dry skin is making me crazy too! I’m 54 and still technically in peri, my last period was October so I’m hoping it doesn’t restart again, I’ve had months of nothing then flooding to the point of severe anemia and don’t want that again!! So many crazy things, thank you so much for making sure we are aware of as many as you can find or experience! It’s not just hot flashes and moods!! ❤

I’ve had the ice pick headaches as well as itchiness of the eyes. I was also tested for glaucoma 2 years ago. They asked me about other family members having it. I said, No, not that I know of.” Sent me to a specialist and he told me it was just pressure build up in my right eye.

Never had migraines, but in my late 30s I had my first and only ocular migraine. It was terrifying! I thought I was having a stroke and I even called 911. As the headache dissipated, I had the sensation of ceiling fan blades whirring just at the top of my vision before it all went away. I have also had the stabbing eye pain that comes out of nowhere. It occurs right on the inside corner of my eye. I also have vision that changes during the day. I have three different types of glasses: readers, distance and bifocals that were my mom's that help with close up and mid range, meaning the distance to the computer because there are some days that my eyes just can't focus on the computer. It's insane!!
@KariAnneWright5 ай бұрын
I have work glasses for the computer too that are mid range and close up only. They give me a headache sometimes though because I keep looking away and I don’t have distance lenses in them and everything goes blurry.🤷♀️

Been getting bad migraines since I hit puberty now in perimenopause they have got worse, I now get cluster migraines where i can take up to 4-5 migraines a day and can last for a week or two, I now sometimes only get the visual effects in a migraine and no pain that I can handle no probs it is those cluster migraines that take it out of me and I just want to curl up in bed and never leave my bed or stick my head in a freezer just to cool down the head a bit, sick of taking medication for migraines because I have been taking meds most of my life for them. I can only hope when I hit full menopause the migraines stop, fingers crossed.

Yes...all these eye problems for me too. You may want to research castor oil, I finally tried it , it's only been a week, already noticing nice difference!! Very important product must be.. organic, cold pressed, hexane free and also v important it be in amber -Glass- bottle, as plastic leaches into product thus contaminate. ALSO heard can prevent and maybe repair cataracts. 🙏✨ Hope this helps others as much as me. 🌺Thx do much Kari for all you do 💕
