I couldn't agree more with #3. Doesn't matter what one's watching on KZbin, whether is an art channel, moto-channel, horse training channel or wood craft channel, it should be taken with a grain of salt. Try it, if you feel that is something to improve your skill, but use your good judgement whether you should follow thru or leave it as it is.

I also love watching cooking youtube but occasionally I'll get thrown like a random guy who does things "experimentally", aka completely ignorantly. Sometimes you can smell the bullshit coming from someone's channel, but of course that doesn't mean it's not entertaining, and in the end, that's how they get their follower base. I definitely feel this for artist youtube too (but when it comes to art, there's not really a whole lot of "wrong" other than You Need To Give Credit Where Credit Is Due), but I guess all in all, you /could/ learn from anyone, just depends on where they are in comparison to where you are. If you learned something "wrong" you still learned /something/.

It does seem that in 2019 we have moved from the business of art toward the art business. The development of skill, talent, and workmanship have taken a secondary level of value. Production and marketing seem to have become the primary functions in art today.

"Most of these [KZbinrs] talking about art don't really know what they're talking about. They're not really in the business of making and promoting art. They are in the business of creating engaging video content." That's an instant sub from me. The most useful videos I've seen about art, are from people who DON'T make KZbin their priority. Because they're out there making art instead. This also means that such videos are rare. And difficult to find. And valuable. I'll be watching your back-catalog in due time.
@KeshArt5 жыл бұрын
I can relate to that 'Art KZbinr' thing. It's hard trying to get good at art and make good quality content at the same time. I've always thought of myself as an artist who does KZbin videos than a 'art KZbinr' even though I'm put in that box often.. On the other note, listening to anyone's advice is the listeners responsibility knowing the upside and the downsides of it. They should take what's useful to them if any and discard the rest. And also, I would definitely debate the definition of 'true artists'. For me, artists are people who go out into the unknown to make the invisible visible. Don't care much for the medium they use to express that with. Anyways, great video and love the oil sketches!

But art isn't something that is defined by one thing. It's a creative expression of that person. If they're being paid to create then that's a profession. @vp38415 жыл бұрын
It's not all about humbleness, but more about time allocation. Becoming a great painter or chef or any other specialist takes enormous amounts of time and energy. Becoming a popular content creator...takes enormous amounts of time and energy. Sadly, most people just don't have enough of that time and drive to become both. So some gravitate towards building their art skills and some towards actively promoting the skills they already have. Sure, personality types are also somewhere in this mix, but all of them only have 24 hours in the day.

While I really enjoyed this video overall, and it's very useful and well presented, I found that 3rd point to (indeed, as you predicted) to be disagreeable, and not because of the essence of the point; you are right advice not always listening to art KZbinrs. No, what I disagreed with was the playing down of others' skills; you said they're not professionals, at least not in the traditional sense of the word. I think that's easily contested; they are. They make money off their art - that makes them professionals. People pay them for their work via commissions in almost all cases - that also makes them professionals. I don't know if you went to art school or something, but I feel calling yourself a professional then telling others in your field that they aren't professionals because they don't do it the same way as you, is a bad idea. I mean, you even suggest that they're not artists. But the thing is, they are. Yes, the way we consume art has changed, but is it a bad thing? I wouldn't say so. Suddenly what used to be a more middle class thing is accessible to everyone in a great way, and now you don't have to have all these special connections often needed to get into galleries and such - you can just take yourself and your skillset and get posting. I see what you're trying to say, and I know your message is intended to be good, but I feel your ending point was a mix of very discouraging and realistic while also being unrealistic...if that makes any sense? ^~^'' I don't mean to hate on the video; I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be keeping much of the advice in mind! Staying curious is probably the thing on this list that I can vouch for most as being incredibly important since I have related experiences that have proven this to be helpful for me- If it weren't for me seeing art I had no idea how to do and being instantly intrigued by it, I wouldn't have found my passions. I started just with cartoon pencil drawings, but because of either wanting to find out how different things were done on a whim or having new things brought to my attention more personally, I've discovered that I absolutely adore digital painting, animation, and glassblowing, and I've reached out to people who can help me try smaller-scale torch glasswork and even culinary art! Basically, never be afraid to try new things even if they seem wildly different. They might not all work out, but it doesn't automatically make you a paper boat on the sea that way- if you can broaden your horizons to find both something you love and something you're good at and make that your focus, you can become more successful than someone who doesn't have those experiences and extra skillsets under their belt. Sorry for the ramble, I just think it's important… and if it convinces anyone to try something new, kudos to you!

Amateur artists shouldn't be discouraged from sharing their artistic journeys on social media or KZbin. I find them fascinating to follow and watch them develop. More importantly, it's very useful to see how they break out in to the 'professional' world. Because, if that world is anything it's vague. There's no singular path to follow to making sales or shows. The biggest obstacle for them is gatekeeping for answers. Too many succesful artists shy from helping their fellows fly higher. They shouldn't be saying 'pay attention to me, and not them, because I'm the professional'.

Good video. Though #1 is every point from every expert out of every talk/advice. It applies to most fields that it feels like i'm watching a top10 best habit buzzfeed video. Of course it's cliche for a reason: It's true and people need reminding. The issue is it's like "smoking is bad for you". Everyone knows it's true, ain't gonna change much. Once a while they get reminded and might not do it for a couple of days, then the brain goes back to old habits. On average it takes about 40 days to really establish an new neuro pathway / new way of thinking I believe? I was hoping you would emphasize this instead of generically repeating the advice again. Most people already heard the "don't compare yourself to others, only to your past self" line. The issue is this is not totally true or false in all situations. You can't help but compare yourself to others. The brain naturally notices the contrast. The real problem is self-judgement. Of course if i'm a new artist i'm gonna compare my work to some one experienced, that happens automatically. But what I do with the difference I notice is what matters. You can be depressed, or be motivated to improve. Don't compare yourself to others is like saying don't think of a pink elephant. The point about staying the course AND be flexible and change in the current landscape where adaptability is super important, is gonna confuse the crap out of a lot of people. When it's really two things a) Don't be jack of all trades, master of none. Stay on course and get really good at something and b) Leverage internet in all the ways you can while understand its potential, fast faced change, and competition. Most viewers ain't coming from traditional gallery artist background. Even then it's not about just staying home make good work and have an agent or gallery magically knock on your door. Marketing is always a big part, it is just way chaotic and different now, and galleries doesn't do or function the way they used to do for most artists anymore. Don't be an artist, be an Art entrepreneur sounds good. But give concrete info on what people need to do. like if one is serious, there is no reason in this day and age you wouldn't have 1) a YT channel 2) instagram 3) personal website 4) facebook 5) deviantart 6) artstation (once you have some pro experience) All of which costs little or nothing. Supply and demand changed a lot too, culturally we are moving toward in door gaming and tv/movie entertainment, which means a lot of concept artist demand that directly relates to digital media. More success as a social influencer doesn't mean they know better or have the best advice to give is totally true tho. Especially on youtube where algorithm is made to keep more eyeball on the site, for longer... That's ALL it does. Which is annoying, but it is what it is.

Your choice of skin colors, the way you mix them its intriguing. And here I thought I could only play with one color (between brown and peach). Your inspiring me so greatly, the way it looks so natural. I feel like I'm just doing Childs play here😭 by watching you, but now I'm more determined to reach the greatest level. The advice of not to envy someone is burning in my mind ( I am currently doing it)... But now I understand why... Thank you! 😋

Wow this video came up on my recommend at the perfect time. I’ve been getting back into my art, specifically painting and sculptural work, and I finished one piece the other day and I was super happy with it, really proud of myself. But then I started working on my next piece and I have definitely caught myself being super negative before I’ve even finished it or given it time for me to really reflect on it. I’m so quick to tell myself that whatever I’m doing is t good enough, this video was really helpful in just getting my thoughts back on track. Thanks!

*ALRIGHT BEAR WITH ME* Love the video, but I could not disagree more with the beginning. I personally believe that everyone has the potential to be an artist, especially since there are so many different forms of art. Art is about self expression, and I feel as though people often forget this and focus primarily on the ability of the individual rather than the meaning behind the piece. I myself have found so many outlets for self expression; I've had experience with cooking, quilting, ceramics, choir, drawing (of course), some band, jewelry making, painting (with numerous mediums), creative writting, theatre, photography, and color guard (which is kind of like dance but with a flag.) You name it, I've probably done it. From these experiences I've learned that there's a little bit of an artist in pretty much everyone, and that all of this "it's hard to be an artist" is quite ridiculous. Find what you feel passionate about & persue it wholeheartedly. That is how you become an artist. Edit: Also some tips for visual artists; seek to increase your power of observation. Take the time to notice the small details, like the curve of a lip or the tilt of an eye. This can help improve the accuracy of your project if you're going for realism. Second, shading is key, some good shading can bring life to a project. Last but not least, if you're working with color be sure to place values in their correct places _then_ start to hone in on the details. While detail is good sometimes we get overwelmed by it & all it takes is one value to be out of place to throw off an entire project.

Hey Alpay! The idea that artists are entrepeneurs really resonate with me. I really belive in that, artists are willing to give their time and effort with no guarantee of financial returns or recognition. The internet opened up the possibilities of working with art and I'm happy that you are experimenting with this type of content. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing this! :)

Very good advice, all of it! 💙 I tried making an art youtube channel, but soon discovered that I don't like to track my progress that way and sacrifice improving my art for making entertaining videos. 🤷🏻♀️ Now it's just a channel with me talking about things that interest me, mostly self-improvement and habit building, and sometimes I hold up a drawing into the camera, and that's the art portion of it now. 😅

This was such a fantastic video to watch. Really loved watching every second of it and to see you putting those oil Colors to life. I'm an artist myself and I've been drawing ever since I was a kid. I had this weird obsession of drawing birds of prey when I was around 8-9 years old. My craziness level was at its peak. Back then,there was no internet access to me and while walking outdoors, I'd continuosly keep looking up towards the sky in search of kites and eagles and hawks and falcons and what not. I'd observe my subject for a long time very properly then try and put it on the paper through my imagination. Buy then I grew up. Social media happened to me and everything changed. I'm 23 and an artist, but I feel that I've lost that old self due to this rat race of social media which keeps giving me social insecurities and all. I don't know why but I just don't consider the artist that I'm the way way I was 10 years back. That imagination skill is long gone. I needed a push badly and I came across this video,and trust me,this has taken me back to my old self. I'll try and introspect into bring the crazy old artist in me back to life once again. This video has lifted me up and gave me a fresh look towards drawing. Thank you very much. :)

I think I went past 'comparing myself to others' and to 'I like that technique, I'm going to try it!' and it's been working out pretty dang well for me. Every day, I see improvements. They may not be huge improvements, but they're visible to ME.
@bombadt-yt98185 жыл бұрын
comparing yourself to others is probably the cancer of my artist career for the past 9 years. it will never let go off me, so I decided instead of keep running away from it. I face it straight on, in time I will get used to it and getting envious of others will be just "another day in the job and moving on". the only thing that still, confuses me the most probably is the notion of "expanding your area" or "exploring new things". if only I know what or how that works, that would be great. very nice video by the way. thank you.

This was really helpful, I got into art in high school, and I really loved it. But after I got married and now have 2 kids pregnant with the 3rd I still have that urge to improve but it’s been hard to get back into it because I’m not going to lie I’ve been watching a lot of KZbin for inspiration but it really just kind of depresses me at times lol when I see how people have improved and have become really good and I’m still trying to figure out how to jump back in. I love painting and charcoal and everything about art. I’m not interested in making it a job I just want to do it for me but in order to that I have to start somewhere. 🤷🏻♀️ really helpful advice definitely a waking up for me thanks a lot ! I hope to be as good as you☺️

the problem is most people who didn't put so many hours as a kid and did not go to art school missed out on opportunity. Once you enter the adult world and start working regular jobs, money/time resources plays a huge factor on our skills and level of stress which affect the art. If money wasn't a factor I would practice and go to the best schools and buy the best supplies. It seems with out a good source of income your left stuck trying to make do with what you got.

nowadays, being oneself is so hard this makes being an artist more difficult. Thanks for the video it gives a nice perspective.
@vp38415 жыл бұрын
Nowadays being oneself is infinitely easier than 30-50 years ago when you had to only do what was selling in the galleries and what the critics promoted, otherwise you couldn't make a living being an artist. Yes, times do change, but they always did, nothing new here.

Thanks for your interesting video. I am not trying to be an artist. I am almost 80 years old and want to have goals I never achieved in my younger years. I always liked to draw but never had time to learn how to do a one-perspective picture and how to lay a shadow and so on and see how I still can improve. Got a lot of inspiration to see you draw and paint.

I have a big problem with comparing myself to others and not finishing projects due to small mistakes. This is true. I agree fully on what you've said! I love your paintings, they are absolutely beautiful and i find it so interesting because I'm not a painter just a paper and pencil type of gal. I also like your accent! (i don't know if your open about where you're from and even if you were i probably wouldn't scout the internet or look.) No less keep it up your art is beautiful.

A true "artist" is someone who expresses himself/herself through a medium or mediums in a way that he/she intends to (money or no money). We need to know instinctively which techniques we need to master in order to express our inner thoughts and ideas to the outside world (this is where human connections happen). There's never "learning techniques for techniques' sake." If you constantly chase after other people's techniques or skills or ideas, you'll fail miserably as an "artist" or an independent being. You need to know what you want to say, and that's what makes you unique.
@novooooo5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You really have gold worth words. I will remember everything you sayd, it will be helpful, I always compared myself to others and how good they are. But now to think about this, I feel ashamed... I lower myself down, I could become an artist, but I let myself down down and down. I will make sure im going to remember all if them, use them myself, help other people... Again, this really helped.

See I think the comparing your art to others and feeling envious can be a positive thing. So I'm working towards hyper realism drawings and whenever I see another artist's work at a level that I want to be, I get envious of them but instead of hating on them or myself I use that to work harder and build on my skill. Seeing it makes me want to whip out my supplies and knuckle down on it. I know not everyone can work on their emotions this way, it took me a while to twist a, typically, negative emotion and making it positive.
@identification1335 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips, I could actually relate to them from my point of view. I love watching 3D art and misty forests with sun's rays peeping through or how the light catches the tree tops. I will just have to keep trying, perhaps take some tutorials.
