This is why I like Young Justice's version of Batman more. He does have his issues of trying to be a good dad, but it's never to the point of being abusive or terrible. In Young Justice, he demonstrates that everything he does for and with Dick Grayson is to make sure he never becomes like him. From helping him get justice for his parents to making sure he gets training in the disguise of something fun like using basketball to heighten observing skills.

Most likely similar to the comics where Joker kidnaps and "murders" Jason, though I bet the details and the way it happened are different, as there was a sense they were setting up for a possible story-arc where Jason would be a villain. Maybe he was part of the team and he blames them for never being able to find him. Wouldn't surprise me if Ra's Al Ghul resurrected him for the sole purpose of being a double agent for the Light, only for him to escape and plan his revenge on his own.

One other bad thing that Bruce did to him was not telling him about Jason’s death (Dick was off world and didn’t know for weeks) and later getting mad at Dick when talking about him and how Dick didn’t want Jason to be Robin. While that may have been true and Bruce was grieving, that wasn’t entirely fair to Dick, who also grieved Jason’s death. In general, Dick is the closest to Bruce, and that shouldn’t be forgotten, but these two hit a few bumps along the way.

Evelyn Sakura Dick didn’t learn about it until some point in the New Teen Titans (I forget the issue at the moment). He was in space doing Titans business when it happened and later found out because he found some newspapers talking about it. He confronts Bruce about it later. I believe around the time, if not before Tim was going to be Robin (again I forget the issue) and Bruce got mad at Dick for mentioning it and how Dick never wanted Jason to be Robin. He didn’t, but it wasn’t like he could stop him since it was also during the time where they were on rocky ground.

I feel like so many writers are obsessed with making Batman this image of brute force, no care, and no empathy. From my experience of reading Batman through the years, he's always been deeply empathetic and caring, and as a father kind of like a drill sergeant, but never abusive. If we move away from these uber-aggressive ideas about him, we'd all get the Batman we know and love. A man who lost his family, and finds people like him to help them too.

Brian Michael Bendis got this right in his Batman: Universe run. In it, Batman is still a badass but a caring person as well. It's far more interesting to see such complexity. This is a guy who wants others to never have to go through what he did.

The first child always takes the brunt of everything so the youngers don’t have to. This goes for the writers who make Grayson most of all. I don’t think any of them had any experience writing kid characters or even how to write one for Batman. They saw him as a side kick but not an actual kid. Personally I like the Young Justice version of Batman and Dick and the newest (fanmade) comic Wayne Family Adventures. THATS a comic that knows how to write good relationships and mentally healthy Bruce Wayne!

With Jason, it was an attempt to focus his anger toward something better. He was pressured into taking Tim on by Dick, Alfred and Tim himself. Then he had to adopt him later, after his dad died. I think that Jason was the only one where Bruce was wrong. Him becoming Robin just made him worse. The rest were going to do it anyway.

Frank Miller was great...emphasis on *was.* The Dark Knight Returns and Batman Year One are fantastic because they play to Miller's strengths: dark, gritty stories with over the top action and a noir tone. But after like, 2001, he went off the walls *insane.* Like, having Batman fight Al Qaeda, crazy. That and the absolute train wreck that is All-Star Batman. He's a great Batman writer, but only for two kinds of Batman stories: Batman just starting out, and Batman after he's gone absolutely nuts. Anything else is just garbage.

this is what happens when you starve yourself off emotional intimacy by still choose to hang around people. Bruce can wear a mask, play a character for the public, and even relinquish leadership to others but if someone gets close because of his lack of connections emotionally he forcibly connects to them and emotions he has never properly handled flow out of him. Bruce most likely didnt think of Barbara as an actual love interest and instead was consumed by emotions and urges that he actively attempted to avoid for most of his life and it was easy for him to give in because these feelings weren't directed towards someone that he constantly has to keep on his toes around like cat woman, it was someone he could consider 'family' someone he could let his guard down around and while it doesnt make this any better because he was like an idol, symbol of justice, teacher, and surrogate father (creepy) to barbara so her feelings towards Bruce made it easier for this to happen. this all culminates in the idea that the way Batman/Bruce conducts himself is mentally self-destructive and as he is slowly destroying himself he hurts those around him which coincidentally is why i fucking hate the plot-twist of the resent bat-wedding because this marriage would force batman to confront parts of himself he only becomes aware of when he fucks up because he would be in a co-dependent relation ship and catwoman wouldnt take his bullshit when he isnt being the guy worth of "because im batman"

I always like to think that the Batfamily has a loving relationship with each other, but I know that's realistically not possible. I'll just headcanon that, despite his flaws, his kids still love him in their own way, because they know he loves them too, as much as he usually doesn't show that, and does the things he does to protect them. My favorite Batman is the one that tries to be a good parent, but failing at times, only because he wants the best for his family (like Young Justice or Arkhamverse Batman).

His distrustful, controlling, almost totalitarian nature make him extremely difficult to work with. His inability to function in a normal relationship-romantic or otherwise-is just unhealthy. These aren't traits I'd want to see my kids developing. And let's talk for a minute about how he relates to kids. Nevermind the physical danger he subjects them to on a regular basis. He shouldn't encourage any child to go down the same path he's taken. And yet he does it, time & time again. He brings them into his world of dress-up & make-believe, indulges their fantasies & denies them any semblance of a normal life. He's teaching them to hide from their pain, not cope with it. He's not helping them; he's screwing them up further. (Look at Jason Todd if you want to argue.) It also doesn't help that he's never had a stable woman in his life. Yet he keeps trying to raise children without one. A boy needs a mother as well as a father, especially if his father figure feels that dressing up like animals & punching people is the best way to solve your problems. In real life, if you saw a bachelor take a kid into his care & parade him around in a mask, barking orders at him & once again, ENDANGERING HIS LIFE, you'd petition the court to take the kid away. And you'd be right to do so. As it stands, the way Bruce handles kids is in a lot of ways remniscent of Michael Jackson. No, you die-hard Bat-fans, I'm not saying he's molesting the kids (But then I don't think Michael did either)-but I am saying that there are parallels. An emotionally stunted man trying to bring up an emotionally scarred kid by himself is a recipe for disaster. Another thing; I remember someone (I think it was Frank Miller) saying that Batman believes that entropy & chaos are the natural state of man, & order must be imposed by force. Y'know, I seem to recall similar sentiments being spoken by Darth Vader.

Although I do understand you’re number 1 choice (Batman allowing Dick Grayson to become Robin) I would personally have to disagree. Yes it’s a very odd choice for Bruce to allow him to become Robin, but hear me out: When Dick figured out that Bruce was Batman he immediately wanted to join him in his war against crime. Naturally Batman didn’t want this lifestyle for his son, but let’s be honest, Dick would just sneak out of the house and fight street thug’s whenever Batman where to left the mansion. At least being trained by Batman meant that Robin actually had a chance to survive the harsh streets of Gotham. Now I do agree with the point that this decision led to the entire list but the decision of making him Robin I don’t think wasn’t that bad.

In Young Justice Wonder Woman makes the comment that he began training Robin at the tender age of 9. Batman's reply was the that he allowed Robin to train with him so Robin wouldn't become him. I don't really count the Batman Strikes again version because according to that conversation Grayson did not stay a Robin. He had a chance to live a life without being robin and he became a metamutant. Now once Grayson turned himself into that Batman had no choice but to defend himself and Carrie by destroying Grayson.

What I concider the worst. (A sequence of events. I DON'T KNOW CANON VERY WELL, PLS CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG) -Batman fires Robin for being hurt (after being a vigilante for years). Dick takes it as the rejection it is and leaves. -Dick goes to a new city, starts a new life, Batman is a no show. -Batman takes in another kid and doesn't tell him anything. Ouch, is he some kind of stranger? -Said kid dies, still doesn't tell him anything because he is like a stranger. -Blockbuster ruins his life, attacks the circus, blows up his neighbors, Dick is losing it, still Bruce is no show. -Blud is destroyed, Dick actively tries to kill himself, Batman shows up to yell at him that it's his fault for not valuing his own life (when Batman has straight up told him that the lives of the people he saves are more important than his own). I know that Bruce supposedly cares about Dick, it just doesn't fit with any one of these and especially not with all of them together.

Just a side note, the whole "he's lied and omitted information to the batfamily" part is actually kind of why I love Batman vs a lot of other superheroes. Batman's bad choices, lying, and other things show that he truly is just a MAN. He makes mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes cost him. But it's understandable. He may be Batman, but he's not perfect. A lot of other heroes always make the right choice and save the day. Batman makes the wrong choice, and he bears the burden of his choices, fighting through his mistakes and saving the day anyways. It's a lot more relatable, and honestly opens up way more avenues of vulnerability. Also, despite his lying and things, he always has good intentions. He's afraid of seeing them get hurt. He doesn't want to mingle them into his problems. Despite taking on so many apprentices, he still feels like he has to do everything himself. They're moreover backup to him, but he would never want to put them on the front lines unless he absolutely had to. Again, it's what I love about Batman.

Wasn't there a sequence after Court of Owls when Bruce (and I admit Bruce had been through a LOT) goes off on Dick about the Grayson/Owl link, and punches him for no really good reason ? Especially when Richard had just been deeply instrumental in getting Batman through the whole ordeal alive and relatively sane? Then Dick basically says he wishes he could just quit Batman, but that's not possible. The moment struck me as quite sad. Am I remembering correctly? I need to dig out my Owls graphic collection!

From what i remember (well at least from Snyder's Court of Owls scenario), Nightwing is upset because Batman didn't tell him that the talon who was sent to kill him was in fact Dick's great-grand-father. So Nightwing starts yelling at Bruce, asking him why Bruce shut him out and kept that secret, but above all he accused Bruce of caring only for himself, not trusting Dick enough to confess all of that ... Fed up with this bullshit, Batman smacks Nightwing, so hard one of Dick's teeth fell off. However, this tooth is not any tooth, it's one decorated with the Court's seal ... proving that Dick was meant to be the next talon. (Ok I'll admit Bruce kinda overreacted, but he had a pretty rough day though, and Dick questioning his integrity + confronting him with his trust issues certainly made him more pissed)

Batman doesn't need to take time to show his feelings towards others. He is a mortal man who chose to take the job of a super hero. He doesn't have the mental and physical capacity to show affection when he is trying to solve multiple crimes and find cracks in criminal organizations. Death don't wait for you to be ready. It was his training for years. One mistake is grounds for death of you and/or whom you are trying to save. Batman has showed compassion. He just doesn't think he needs to keep showing it because it hasn't changed. The dynamic duo robins keep manifesting their own thoughts and interpretations into what they think Batman thinks of them when really it never changed and is as deep a relationship as they could ever imagine. Their drama stems from the writers creating entertainment. I prefer seeing the robins and bat girls investigating current crimes and beating on criminals. If you want to watch heart felt moments they got reruns of Friends and The Brady Bunch. Bruce Wayne's parents were shot in cold blood on a day off or during a bonding experience with his parents. I doubt he wants to make himself and anyone he is with that vulnerable again.
