Here is our vlog from our time in LA. As parents, we sometimes worry about bringing Sutan along on our work trips. However, we believe that exposing her to different people and cultures from a young age will broaden her world. Watching her feel and learn with her little 5-year-old heart is incredibly rewarding. Thank you to all kimonoko for always supporting and watching her grow with us!
We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone at Chafinity for welcoming us like family and supporting us during our stay. Please check out their website at chafinity.com/...

I already placed a comment but felt something was left out.. just wanna say ..Moe is so beautiful 😍❤️ her kimono her style, her radiant smile.. 😊 and along the same lines.. California is still beautiful it seems, at the right places after reading all the bad news about the state and tent ⛺ cities and rampant theft etc in Hollywood.. there's still much beauty in California too. Maybe it's where our eyes and mind keeps out focus at 🤓 Going through all kinds of hardshipss and life testing me its always a true breath 💗💗💗 of fresh air and positivity watching a Kimono 👘 Mom episode. They deserve all their success 🙏 and wishing them and Sutan all that is favorable in their lives.....❤❤❤ Greetings from a Dutchie 🇳🇱 Dave

The conversation with Sutan about the difficulty to learn English made me tear up. That was so sweet and empathetic! My parents were the same when I was a kid and I got bullied for not being able to talk to my classmates in English, but look at me now~ Sutan can do it! My parents saw me crying one day cuz I couldn't converse in English. So what they did, every dinner time for a whole year we had "English hour" and my dad kept throwing at me questions that I had to respond to in English. "How was your day?" and I only responded with "Good." After a year I could say "Well, it was okay I guess!" Then the following year it became, "Thanks for asking Tatay (father). I went to school today and it was tiring. We played volleyball in school."

In elementary school a kid from Poland came into our class. My teacher sat him beside me and told me from this day on, Thomas will be sitting next to you, he will be playing with you during breaks and you guys will do homework together. He was either staying at my parent's home or I was staying at his parent's home for homework. Within a year he was able to learn the language. Not just because of me but he was fully involved and integrated. That is how you solve such issue. People from other countries barely speak the language of the country they moved to because they tend to stay with their own kind. Get involved and it does not matter if you don't speak the language at all, you will learn the language eventually.

As much as I understand people wanting to see Sutan, it’s indeed too much for a 5 year old, it’s good they gave her space. And yes, children can play even if they don’t understand each other, being in this position will aid her to learn the language and feel more and more comfortable with english speaking children/people. Letting her know you’re there for her and understand her frustrations will give her strength. Wonderful experience for all of you!

I like Moe's attitude towards Sutan. Both compassionate (not dismissing her frustration about not being able to speak English) and tough love (let her be uncomfortable mingling with the children for play). It may look diffcult now for Sutan, but she will be soooo well-adjusted in the future, confident, and empowered as modelled by Mama, despite the nerve-wracking experience. 😊

Watching this just brought me to tears!! これを見てるとき、泣きそうになった!! I am currently 16-- I was born in Japan but soon after moved to the US for a lot of my elementary school and now I am back in Japan. 今日本のインターで高校生ですけれど、この理由は小学校をアメリカで過ごしたからです。I was definitely more bilingual when I was younger, but as I have grown older, I can understand what people are saying to me in Japanese, but I struggle to fully communicate my thoughts back. 私は、ハーフで、日本語で全部ゆいたいことを普通言えなきってよくくやしくなる気分が渡ります。It can be so so frustrating not being able to have a full conversation with family and friends, and I know that my parents often wonder if they made the right decisions. To that, I just want to say that although it can be really challenging; as I have gotten older I have come to see how special and unique my struggles and experiences are and I know that Sutan will use this experience and probably many more to come and learn those lessons when the time is right for her. そう言っても、こうゆう経験についてすっごく大切なことだってもうともうと私が年取ると輪っかってきてる音です。 (Sorry, my Japanese is not the best but I tried!)

When Sutan was younger, she said these words “Hi guys, welcome to Kimono Mom’s kitchen. I’m Moe and this is Sutan”! And she also said, “You wanna matcha latte, hmm”. Sutan is the cutest girl ever!

I can feel Sutan’s frustration and desire to be good at this “speaking English thing”. I think she knows mama and daddy are good at things and are always proud of them but this English thing is rather difficult for them too. I hope you all have fun with it together! Lots of love ❤❤❤

At the end of the day, kids have their own language😄 Sutan is smart and the good environment also helps a lot. When I was a kid I used to visit my grandparent's house in the countryside. It's a bit hard for me to understand the neighbouring kids dialect, but we have no problem playing together😊

I’m watching this as my new Japanese Daughter in law, 8 year old and 12 year old children are here for first time in USA. And the fear of trying new words, and overcoming is so real. But love and laughter and food is a universal language. And we are laughing lots and playing and eating and swimming and life is so Perfect right now.

Thank you so much for your support Motto! I was also impressed by Sutan's hard work and how Mika and Mason played Japanese songs on the piano for Sutan, tried to communicate with her.🥹There was a subtitle missing in some places, but I fixed it now!

Southern California has many Japanese Americans, and ex-pat Japanese. Therefore, we have a few Japanese specific supermarkets. There are plenty of Asian Americans with heritages from many Asian nations, and for the larger populations they too have supermarkets that cater to their populations and provide for ingredients that are used in their cuisine.

Sutan reminds me of myself when I was 5 years old and also did not know English at the time. My parents only speak Vietnamese so the first years of my life I also only spoke Vietnamese. It wasn’t until going through the U.S. schooling system that I gradually picked up English through exposure. I have faith Sutan will be more familiar with English at the end of the tour. Best wishes! 💕😊

My husband was in the US Army, our 2 kids spent their early years in Germany. I think their experience gave them a broader view of the world and people. They were more open, have a huge vocabulary and more emotionally mature than others their age. My 5 year old grand daughter and Sutan would have a grand time being friends.

I learned French as a kid in school, and I learned Japanese as an adult living in Japan. I've been teaching English here for five years now, and I can easily say every single student who has passed through my classroom has felt the same way Sutan does at one point or another. And so have I, as a kid and an adult! It's frustrating to not be able to express yourself fully. But when we practice every day, and we work on our ability to communicate, not just speak, through gestures, using individual known words to convey ideas, etc. we are able to express ourselves even if we don't know the right words or grammar structures. I'm glad Sutan has two great role models to help her learn to persevere and keep trying, and not be afraid to make mistakes! It's so important to be resilient and open to mistakes when learning another language. And I hope she has the opportunity to learn some English at kindergarten! I visit a kindergarten in my area twice a month, and the students who come from that school are SO excited to speak and learn English in elementary school. It will feel less scary for her, too, if she's learning alongside her peers!
