Respectable showing for Sloan who are my number 1. Great band with 13 studio albums at least 8 of which are classics. Great live band. Seen them many times and hung out with them at a show in Seattle. One unfortunate omission is the wonderful singer songwriter Ron Sexsmith. He is a great talent.

Anne Murray sold over 55 million albums in her 40-year career, won four Grammys including the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1979. Like you, most of these artists I never heard of or were one hit wonders. you could add up all the music from 35-40 of the artists on this list and still not do half what Anne accomplished.

I thought of another Canadian act that should have made this list: doo-wop group The Diamonds, who had 15 Billboard Top 40 hits from the 1950s to the early '60s, including "Little Darlin'" and "The Stroll". One of their founding members, Dave Somerville, co-wrote the theme song to the Lee Majors action series The Fall Guy.

Destroyer are utterly fantastic - they have been making music for about 30 years, and they have 3 or 4 albums that I consider 10/10 masterpieces, notably "Kaputt" and "Streethawk" - I guarantee that the sound of their music will not be what you expect based on the band name

@@quebecforce111 Canada’s most popular group in the 1960s. Their song Four Strong Winds was voted in a 2005 poll taken by the CBC as the best Canadian song of all time. They also promoted Canadian new talent. In 1965 they recorded Early Morning Rain by a struggling young folksinger Gordon Lightfoot and in 1967 they recorded Circle Game by an almost unknown Joni Mitchell. I was privileged to see them at the 1967 Mariposa Folk Festival in Orangeville Ontario which also had the first major appearance of a young Joni Mitchell.

In the late 70's my life revolved around going to live gigs regularly. One of these concerts was Journey, a massive band at the time but I went mainly just to see their support act: PAT TRAVERS(With the great Tommy Aldridge on drums), a fantastic Canadian guitarist blew Journey off stage that night. Why isn't this man getting the respect he deserves? Nobody here in KZbin seems to know that he exists and of course Rolling Stone haven't got a clue as usual omitting him from this list. For me, he is in the top 5 Canadians for sure, a guitar genius!

I was going through my CD collection and I found an album by a Canadian artist named Mitchell Hunter called "People Will Believe Anything If You Whisper It" from 2004. It's an excellent heavy pop album with some very serious lyrics. One song I really like is called "alien", but the whole album has a cool and sincere sound to it. The album is on Spotify, but I don't see it on KZbin. I think Mitchell is from Halifax, NS. Good, but I guess obscure. Check it out!

@barrymoore4470
@barrymoore4470 9 ай бұрын
Quite a few names in this list were new to me, partially explained by the fact that I'm from the United States. Yet others are only names to me, like Hank Snow, a legendary contributor to country and Western, but whose actual music I don't believe I've yet encountered (Wilf Carter could have been another contender in this category). Some others, like The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, are classic bands, but not necessarily personal favorites. Some Canadian artists/ groups I especially enjoy and/or esteem, cited in alphabetical order: --Bryan Adams --April Wine --Leonard Cohen --Nelly Furtado --k.d. lang --Gordon Lightfoot --Sarah McLachlan --Joni Mitchell --Anne Murray --Rush --Strange Advance --Shania Twain --Neil Young I regret that I couldn't find room for a Francophone artist in my list. The closest example with whom I'm sufficiently familiar, Celine Dion, has one song I like a lot, "That's the Way It Is", but nary another that I regard as a favorite, and all of these are in English rather than French. Cohen of course was native to Quebec, but, to the best of my knowledge, composed consistently in English.
@barrymoore4470
@barrymoore4470 9 ай бұрын
I realize now after scanning other comments here that Bachman-Turner Overdrive was not included in the 'Rolling Stone' list, but somehow I thought they had been. A classic band, nonetheless, and no doubt unfairly excluded.

I feel that Quebec is so underrepresented in this list ... artists like: Harmonium, Offenbach, les Colocs, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, the Box, Sass Jordan, Too Many Cooks, etc ... Plus, none on the list are French-Canadiens except for Céline Dion and she's only on the list because of her English albums. But from this list, I would go with : 5- Joni Mitchell 4- Tragically Hip 3- Leonard Cohen 2- Rush 1- Neil Young

I've only discovered your "reaction" videos recently' Larry. Really enjoying them. Don't know many of the artists/ bands on the list. Of the ones I know I really like The Band, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and kd Lang. - Saw her live twice in Glasgow, Scotland in the 1990s. Only Rush album I know is "A Farewell to Kings" which I think is great. Not a Brian Adams fan. Really like the 4/5 Gordon Lightfoot songs which I know. The Guess Who is not all that well known in the UK but my wife was sent a Guess Who compilation at Christmas from a friend who lives in Utah and is a huge fan. Can't fault the songs / playing / singing but I found the production a bit dated. I own a cd by a lesser known Canadian singer-songwriter called Wyckham Porteous. - "Looking for Ground" [1995]. Well worth a listen.

Hard to argue against Joni Mitchell but for my preferences I'd put her a bit lower. Personally I like Jann Arden, Bruce Cockburn, 54-40, Grapes of Wrath, The Tea Party, The Payolas, Red Rider and Men Without Hats better than many included on this list. How about Harlequin and your oft mentioned Northern Pikes? If they're going to include Hank Snow why not Paul Anka? Not my style but if we're going to be consistent... weird list, anyways...

Interesting list....I realize it's all very subjective but it's to wrap my head around Snow, Nelly Furtado and Richie Hawting on this list and not Max Webster, Triumph or BTO Personally I think Max Webster ranks in my list of greatest bands of all time.

Feel a little unqualified as I am not Canadian but I would think The Tragically Hip are #1 They represented Canada so well and Gordie was a class act all the way to the end BTO is a major miss off this list My top 5 1 The Tragically Hip 2 Joni 3 Leonard Cohen 4. Rush 5 Neil Young And i would put Feist top 10

April Wine were a fantastic live band. Unlike 5440, April Wine knew how to put on a show. This list's order just proves how little understanding there is of the impact of certain Canadian bands. The low placement of both The Tragically Hip and April Wine is terrible. The amount of sales has nothing to do with influence.

I would have Gordon Lightfoot at Number 1. You have to be pretty good if Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash admire your work and cover your songs.

Starting out Gordon Lightfoot was known for writing songs for the American artists until he came into his own.

Alright, go Canada! The order in RS lists is never to anyone's liking! 😅 Rightfully so. Still, I won't argue with the top 3. Nickelback was at 51 I guess... (not!)
