Multiple ancestors of mine were founding families of NYC, which at the time was a Dutch colony. Our family has an entire row of graves in the Trinity-St. Paul's Cemetery, and many others are buried in Greenwood and other historic cemeteries. I am from the region, but actually grew up in CNY State. As an adult I moved to Manhattan, where I returned to my ancestral roots of building this city. I worked as a high rise project manager for some of NYC's largest architectural firms. I retired to a Sun Belt location, but my heart will always remain in NYC. One of my favorite free things to do in Manhattan was hanging out weekends in Barnes and Nobles on lower Fifth Avenue, or browsing around the stacks in the Strand Bookstore. My favorite attraction in NYC is The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Also a favorite thing to do is to get on the subway, get off at a random stop, go up and out and find the first restaurant and eat there (unless the grade in the window is low or it just doesn't interest you lol) but I've found multiple amazing restaurants that way, places I never would have tried otherwise. Have fun!!!

I can't be 100% sure as this was during my NYC trip way back in 2005, but I had always scratched my head trying to remember how a friend at the time managed to get to a rooftop view without any "swipe security pass" or a key access. I didn't think it was my friend's worksite or his apartment building; I'd say it was the number 01, free feature you mentioned in your video!! Thanks for unlocking my repressed memory 19 years ago!!

I would also add to the list the recently completed East River Esplanade, a pathway and bike trail built on a pier along the shore of the East River from 53rd Street to about 62nd Street. On previous trips to New York over the past few years, I watched as this pathway came to fruition at various stages of its construction. I finally got to experience it firsthand during my most recent visit to the city this past weekend. The esplanade is beautifully landscaped and offers numerous benches to sit and take in the spectacular views out over the river towards Roosevelt Island and Queens and enjoy watching the boats go by.

Hi Barr, would you consider doing an ultimate tourists guide to Brooklyn? I've only been across the east river a couple times to go to things like DUMBO and cross the bridge, so I've barely even gotten my feet wet in Brooklyn. I'll be going to the border of Williamsburg/Bushwick for a concert in a few months, and I'd really like to find something cool to kill a couple hours before I go see the show.

Always enjoy your videos. And walking the Manhattan Bridge can be great. However, your red arrow is pointing at the dedicated bike lane on the north side of the bridge, and not the pedestrian walkway on the south side. Trust me, you do NOT want to be a pedestrian walking in the bike lane as it would almost definitely be dangerous.

Interesting that you mentioned Lincoln Center Summer for the City. I walked by there about a week or 2 ago and they had a DJ on the plaza. But guess what... Only people with headphones in the closed off area could hear the music. I guess they don't want the poor plebs to gather around the plaza which I thought was public. So much for "summer FOR the city"

I'd love for you to do a video on things to do with (little) girls. My family visited me last week and I took them to the AMNH, which my 8 year old dino-obsessed nephew loved, but my 5 year old niece was bored silly and felt like the whole day was about him, so she wanted a girly day that was about her. Her mom and I spent several hours on the internet looking for things to do with girls in NYC, but googling that just returns adult-girl trip stuff. So we sifted through tons of "kid" stuff and were dismayed to find that while there are plenty of things to do that are neutral or appeal to boys, very little is "girly". The American girl museum was about all we came up with, and that can be fairly expensive.
