Nice video Dave. I'm a .50 cal BP shooter and a good overall non petroleum lube is Ballistol. I use it all over the metal/wood and it's particulally good as a bore lube and rust preventor. A mix 1 part ballistol to 5 parts water makes an excellent patch lube. I'm using pillow ticking from Walmart for patch material (mic's at .018)

Thanks for the very informative video. Bought a .58 cal Zouave at a gun show. I took it apart, cleaned it and the lock had issues. Brought it to a gun shop, the gunsmith saw the problem. Told me how to repair the lock, the rifle works fine. Love shooting the rifle!

Nice find Dave I found a Knight Bighorn .50 caliber black powder rifle 2 years ago at a flea market for 100 bucks. I got home and looked it up and found out they sold for 400. It was set up for #11 primers and I also ordered a 209 primer adapter kit for it so I have both options now. I also ordered a Lee .50 cal dual cavity mold to make my own bullets for around 30 bucks. All told I have less than 200 bucks into it and supplies and a real good accurate rifle. Gotta love flea markets!!!

I got my Tompson Center Hawken off the sale rack in a sporting goods store back in 1992 for $199. At the time a new one in the box was $330. So, I asked why so cheap? The answer was because everyone who spends full price wants one new out of the box, and in 50 caliber (this one was 45 caliber and had been handled some being on the display rack). It has a long stock, and I have long arms and neck. As soon as I shouldered it, I fell in love with it. I've taken about a dozen deer with it including a nice 8 point buck in 2023. It's still my favorite. I never seem to be able to get enough of those good deals though.

This is definitely one of the better 'amateur' videos out there. A great instructional aid for people getting into BP rifles. I'm not a fan of under sizing the ball. A paper target at fifty yards will show you that you're getting much larger groups doing that. Even the Ying yang places(Dicks) have .50 caliber balls and sabots and of course, casting your own is a hoot. Rock on, good buddy!

I own a Thompson Center .50 caliber Hawken Rfle. I've owned it since 1976. It has a 1-48 twist, so will shoot round ball and conical. For hunting deer, which I have many times. I use the Thompson Center Maxi Ball 370grain, lubed. An over powder wad, and 80 grains of 2f black powder. It pretty much all burns in the barrel, with just a nominal puff of smoke coming out the muzzle. I've taken many deer with this load.

You can also boil your rifles parts. Especially any screws, barrel bands, barrel wedges, pins, lock parts, even the barrel itself. This will help clean any dirt, dried grease,etc.. While converting any sugar rust that might be present into a very basic sort of rust blueing. This will help save any of the rifles original finish without useing a bunch of harsh chemicals or grinding tools.

Dave, nice gun. 2 products to look into are Balistol as a patch lube and Barricade as a boar protectant.
@tsmithkc11 жыл бұрын
If the rust isn't deep and pitted, you might get good results just boiling the part in distilled water. This was done on purpose to create old-fashioned "rust blue" on metal parts. Used to be rainwater they would use, but distilled works nicely.

Dave one suggestion I would like to make that will make your life much easier in cleaning your firelock is the purchase of a mainspring vice. This will allow your to disassemble the entire lock by first clamping the mainspring and relieving tension on the tumbler. By the way, if you clean your weapon with a finish of thin oil you should have no problem even if that oil is petroleum based. Break Free works well too. Happy shooting pard!

Dave, I've gotta ask: What's your favorite hunting method? I have a huge affinity for the bow (particularly the ones made from natural materials), but I was just curious what yours was. Was also wondering if you'd do a primitive video series (like a "Journal of the Hut/Longhouse"- where you'd do things with stone tools & such). Like the Journal of the Yurt where you did all the day-to-day stuff & maybe prepared for the next season. Summer might be an easier season to try all that out.

3:42 regarding removing the rust, it's better to use electrolysis to remove the rust. If you've got a battery charger and a piece of scrap iron, you put them in a bath of water and bicarbonate of soda. The trigger mechanism becomes the cathode and the scrap iron becomes the anode. Left overnight, the rust will migrate from the cathode (trigger) to the anode (scrap iron). Lots of videos about it on youtube.
@w.rustylane56505 жыл бұрын
It would be easier if you removed the touch hole liner. I have nearly the same flintlock rifle by Pedersoli. Mine is the Pedersoli .50 cal Frontier flintlock with a 39 inch barrel. Also, the lock is easily cleaned if you remove the flash pan guard. And no the Frontier did not come with a flash pan guard. I love my rifle as you probably will love your Pedersoli. Since you said it was a Frontier, then we have the same rifles except you paid about 1/4th of what I paid for mine. Wow, what a find for $275.00! My barrel came with a plumb brown finish. I've had to work on my lock when the tumbler would not stay on the half cock position. I will eventually replace the Pedersoli lock with an L&R rpl lock. You will notice that the trigger guard just sits on top of the wood and not inletted as the originals were. I am going to inlet my trigger guard and will have to file a step on the trigger guard where it meets the trigger plate. Not too hard to do. I also replaced my ramrod with a fiberglass one which is not period correct after I broke the original ramrod. I will be ordering a new wooden hickory ramrod from Dixie Gun Works. The ramrod threads are 10-32. My load is 90 grains of 2Fg behind a .490 round ball with a .010 patch. When I run out of 2Fg I'll use 60 grains of 3Fg behind my .490 round ball with a .010 patch. Both loads work really well with my flintlock. I do use 4Fg for my priming powder. Mine shoots low at 25 yards. In order to get it at point of aim, point of impact you will have to file down the front sight as I did. I used to use Bore Butter for my lube but I am changing to Track of the Wolf Mink Tallow as my go to lube. Animal fats work the best with patched round ball. I hope you enjoy that rifle as much as I have enjoyed my flintlock. Just watched your apology and, brother, you're a straight shooter. I am certainly glad you're a Christian and God bless you. No apology needed here.

Nice rifle. As much rust as there was on other things you might want to pull the barrel off of it and make sure it isn't rusting between the stock and the underside of the barrel. Great find though! That one goes in the win column for sure. I actually ran across an old bolt action .22 at a yard sale last year. It took some serious elbow grease to clean it up, but it turned out great and that $30 gun proved to be a real tack driver.
