Very Nice Lewis! And some claim a round ball is only accurate out to about 75 yards.. With the right method and equipment, you busted that myth!

Yeah....but paper would have showed group size

You can make a 200 yard shot on roundball if your barrel is rifled. Patch gets bound in the rifling and makes it spin like a baseball. Only people that claim roundball is only accurate at 75 yards are probably confused with the Brown Bess, or are modern ammunition manufacturers.

I have hunted for years with 90 grain ff g Goex under a patched round Ball . .54 cal Renegade . Thank you for the Video .

Nice shooting. I only shoot round balls out of my Renegade. It takes too much effort to ram the big cylindrical bullets. Last time I had some of the Maxi Hunter Hornadays, I got so frustrated trying to ram them down the barrel that I put ‘em in my lead pot and melted them down to make roundies.

I would like to see your loading process, for example, how do you orient the over powder patch?

I’ve been patching my 500 Automax loads. I using binder paper with a thin coat of Imperial Sizing Wax. Pushing a 450 grain lead cast bullet at 1,850 FPS and dead nuts accurate.

I have some questions . I am interested in buying a black powder rifle . I think I want a flintlock 50 or 54 cal. ( probably 50 cal. for ease of buying round ball ammo when available ) . I found a hawken style percussion rifle in a pawn shop ( has brass furniture ) . The only things on barrell is the warning & made in Spain .. & 50 cal . The gun has signs of rack storage , but , it appears to be un fired . What would be a good price for it ?

This is 11/04/2022. I watched this video almost a year ago.... always enjoy your videos! Today, I was at the range with my T.C. Hawken. The factory barrel was ruined so I replaced it with a Green Mountain, 1:66 twist. I decided to try the 200 yd 20x24 plate. I was pleased to hear a good solid hit on my first shot. The sights are the open sights just like the factory sends out. I was shooting a patched round ball, pillow ticking, spit lube. Smoke 'n thunder!

I have that exact same barrel in a Hawken stock. I was thinking of trying some Lee R.E.A.L 250 grain bullets in the round ball barrel. The Lee bullets did OK in a 1:48 at 50 yards but nothing all that impressive. I would like to hunt deer during our muzzleloader season here in Maine and shots over 100 yards in the maine woods are rare. My gut tells me trying to work up a load in my Green Mountain barrel with those Lee bullets is a waste of time since it shoots awesome at 100 yards with .490 roundball. what do you think? thank you in advance.

What lube are you using on your home made patches?

Are you cleaning your bore between shots? I find I need to brush and swab between shots or else accuracy falls quickly

Why a 1:70 twist ? Why not a 1:66 or even a 1:48 ? Your way better then I am and I know you have good reasons. Just curious 🤔
@idaholewis2653 жыл бұрын
1:70 is what Green Mountain uses for their Roundball Barrels. I have had just as good Luck with my 1:48 Twist Barrels 👍
@patrickjoseph50283 жыл бұрын
These slower twists allow for higher powder charges to be used without causing the ball to strip the rifling...I always use over the powder felt wads to protect the patch from burnout. John Forsythe's book written (apparently from experience) in 1863 explains in detail the use of very slow twists, round balls and high powder charges as a superior hunting setup of the day...I use his advice 1:75 twist, 54 cal, overpowder felt wads and 120-140 grs dependent on the brand of powder...traditional style effective western muley medicine...
@billmelater64703 жыл бұрын
@@patrickjoseph5028 I thought it had more to do with a slower twist rate simply being a better means to stabilize a round ball in flight.

Question : Just how the He .. er I mean how the HECK can You even SEE that target through those sights , much less hit it ?! I'd have to mount the spoter scope to the rifle to stand a small chance !!!!

Anybody know of a tang sight that I could use on a Traditions Kentucky Rifle?
