Okay okay okay okay okay Since my love of all things cephalopod is apparently not a widespread phenomenon, I will now blow the mind of every other 90's and 00's kid from America: The most correct plural of octopus is OCTOPUSES Come on friends do you think I would get up in a video and be like "I LUV OCTOPUSES YO" and then say the incorrect plural NO OF COURSE NOT There are three plurals: Octopuses Octopodes Octopi Octopi is the most well-known from my era, but it's actually the most incorrect and is only an accepted plural now because it's been used so much! It's based off of the incorrect assumption that octopus is a Latin word, and so it was given the Latin plural (-i). Octopus however was Greek word, and so the correct ending would have been octopodes. But this is rare and not commonly used. Octopuses was the first plural to have existed in English and it has been and still is the most commonly used! So technically you could use all three, but as octopi is based off of an incorrect assumption and it's not even the most common ending (even though in my era that's what many people were calling it), I go with octopuses. Even though octopi is really fun to say.

I also had a lack of judgement with the sun. When I was 16, I fell asleep in the sun for about 30 minutes. My friend also napped on the beach. She had a nice tan and I got second degree burns on the back of my legs and my lower back. I had to go to the hospital. My skin blistered, swelled, became yellow, and did many nasty things I will not mention. I had a standing job where I had to walk, but the burns prevented me from bending my knees/not walking like I had peg legs. Lesson to all: use sunscreen, especially if you are pale.
@elizabethstrand948
@elizabethstrand948 6 жыл бұрын
I totally feel for you, I had to sit at a baseball game for at least 2 hours and I knew I should have put on sunscreen cause my skin is pasty pasty white but I didn't cause I thought I was all cool and hardcore...my thighs (cause I was wearing shorts) got sunburnt, after a day they turned completely purple, it was like someone took a baseball bat and just bruised my legs and for my job I had to wear pants cause I work with hot water and my pants just rubbed against my skin and it peeled and it was really bad. My mom said I was really close to getting second degree burns but I was lucky enough. I can't imagine what you must have been through but I know where you're coming from .
@arieldanielle23
@arieldanielle23 6 жыл бұрын
Oh honey I am so sorry! The last time I had a beach trip I made a big thing about how I don't really sunburn (I'm native American and have olive type skin). I fell asleep on my back with my bum exposed to the sun for a couple hours and everyone LAAAUUUGHED because it was obviously sunburned... but then 2 days later the skin was back to normal. No blistering, no peeling, nothing but a good day of soreness. Still, I use a lot of sunscreen and I will ALWAYS share with people. It's just common sense.
@IceMetalPunk
@IceMetalPunk 5 жыл бұрын
Me, too :( It was like 4 or 5 years ago, my family went to the beach, and I was like, "I don't like the way that sunscreen feels all greasy. So I just won't use any. I'm sure I'll be fine; I don't mind a little sunburn." Got home and had such a painful, blistery burn over my shoulders and neck. I had multiple deep layers of skin peeling for weeks. It even left brown sunspots across my shoulders that apparently are permanent... that can't be healthy >_< All because I didn't want to be greasy for a few hours...

Everything also seems to like my head. Like last week I was on the kitchen floor and my fiance opened the drawer above my head and said "watch your head", so I waited... and then the can opener fell onto my head (accident). Too many instances of my head and other things deciding to hang out together without asking me first.. I don't even have any words for why this happens.

@RachelandJun
@RachelandJun 8 жыл бұрын
+Letters from Japan Well it was horizontal in my gum, so they went up and surgically attached a brace to it, which they pulled down with a chain. They put the brace on the wrong side so it got pulled down backwards. They said you can rotate it with braces once it's down, but at my age now and the time it would take, it's not worth it. It'd be better just to put everything else back in place and then get a crown or whatever it is to change the shape if necessary. I'll just see what it looks like after the Invisalign's done! I don't know that I care enough about it to cap it or anything.

I'm the exact same way with hating ceremonies. I don't like being made the center of attention and I don't like people making a big fuss over me. I passed on my High School Graduation, both of my college Graduations (I graduated from 2 colleges), and I got married at a civic center with just a few witnesses. Thankfully, I'm at a stage in my life where there shouldn't be any more upcoming ceremonies so the worst is over :D

I've had second degree burns all over my back and I know how much it hurts. I was out to get something for my dad (didn't take very long) and came home with blisters all over my back (and on my ears). Ever since then I use sunscreen with high SPF and my mum stopped telling me I was being ridiculous about how much of a burning sensation I'd feel from being in the sun without sunscreen. It was SOOO BAD. I could almost feel the pain all over just from hearing you talk about your experience, Rachel.

I feel like Rachel is so relatable, or at least we have a lot in common, besides a few things like I like mushrooms, I'm ok with eating mushy/soupy foods, my favorite animals are cats, and I prefer Cuddlefish to Octopuses...but still pretty darn relatable

Damn you Jun for mentioning agedashi tofu, I want to eat it now. But there's nothing weird about your hobbies! Ojisan's had to start their hobbies when they were young too. Rachel, you bump into everything too? It hurts, right? I always hit door frames and banisters and all sorts of things.

Also a ginger, and I can feel your pain on the 2nd-degree sunburn. The constant re-blistering was TERRIBLE. And YES to your outlook on ceremonies! I had to go through them just to please my parents. Tripped (but didn't fall) going onto the stage for one of them, and heard a chorus of gasps from the audience. After that I was like DONE. No mas.

+Katherine Weber I got a sunburn as bad as Rachel did when I was visiting Turkey. Turns out the Mediterranean coast sun can go straight through cotton shirts. I was burned so badly my body went into shock, nearly ended up in a local hospital. I didn't think I needed to put sunscreen on _under_ clothing. (o_O)

I can't eat things that are too mushy either, but I draw the line at porridge. Also, cephalopods are freaking awesome! My favorite ones are the ones that have really advanced forms of mimicry, like the mimic octopus and the common cuttlefish. Some of the tiny colorful cuttlefish are really cute too!

You are so lucky you didn't have to go to your HS graduation ceremony, my mom forced me. We had a small class, under 100 kids, yet it still took like an eternity to get all the BS out of the way just to get a paper. I also didn't have a wedding ceremony, standing in front of a bunch of people is horrible, why would I ever willingly want a bunch of people to look at me while I stumble over words and be awkward? xD

So sorry about your previous family cats, Rachel. I've learned this is still a big issue all over with many barriers yet to overcome. There are a few things to share if you know of anyone who's lost a pet. This site, MissingPetPartnership.org, and their related blog and KZbin channels, has unique expert lost pet recovery info, including lost pet behaviour and factors that can influence recovery. It gives info specific to the species of animal, the pet's personality, and situation. Good tips if someone wants to hire a pet detective, wants to learn about doing that, excellent links to other sites including some international directories. Many places now have Facebook groups where volunteers are willing to help recover pets. Some are specific to one species. Connect with area rescue groups to find out what the laws are on lost and found pets, where lost and found pets are commonly posted online, and where stray animals might end up at animal control or animal services. Some places require you to make found pet reports while others might say all strays are supposed to be turned over. Some cities still don't post good info or links on their websites about this to help visitors or residents, but cities might change what's on their websites if asked. They could also include links area rescue groups recommend. Things that help lost pets get back home are very helpful because it frees up room in shelters and rescues for animals who are truly homeless, and it can help save lives. Sharing successful reunion stories and a willingness to return pets to owners also generates goodwill and positive feelings towards shelters and groups involved because it's what we'd want if our pets were lost. A big thank you to everyone helping those in need!
