I’ve had terrible experiences throughout life . Tragedy after tragedy. Losing my mom in my late teens. Losing my older brother shortly after. Losing my close friends while in the marines. Watching my father lose everything and go bankrupt afterwards and through it all was pain. But it made me realize just how much I am capable of. “Terrible experiences poses the riddle of showing whether the person who has them is not terrible.” I realized just how much strength and courage I had, all thanks to painful and terrible experiences. I came out the other side, which again, showed me just how strong I truly was. Had it not been for those experiences, I may have not been this tough, and had this perspective on life. I take everything with a grain of salt now. And am much more calm and collected now. But that came through an enormous amount of persistence and resilience via- pain. I don’t welcome this upon anyone, it’s just a nice tool or fresh reminder that life’s tragedy doesn’t make you a tragedy in it of itself. It provides oppurtunity to grow through it.

I was on exercise in the Australian army at Shoalwater Bay on the central Queensland coast. It was a defensive activity so we had to dig out fighting pits, sleeping bays, communication trenches, put up wire obstacles, go on patrol etc. One hot day a grass fire came through our position. We were told to stay put. The fire passed and we were all overheated and coughing from the smoke. Then it started to rain and filled up our pits, and after sunset it got windy and cold with even more rain. At the end of the Ex there was a fighting withdrawal at night and long fast march of 40km to break contact. We could only laugh.

Negative visualization honestly was one of the biggest components of curing my anxiety. Now, when I say my anxiety is "cured" I don't mean it's gone. Anxiety is natural. I mean it no longer affects my life in the toxic way it did before. I don't ruminate on it or try to push it away. "Don't be scared, be prepared."

@@mcgritty8842 thank you! It's honestly wild to picture myself now vs. myself 10-15 years ago. I used to lie awake for hours at night having panic attacks thinking about situations both real and imagined that made me anxious. Could have been anything from something I said 10 years ago that hurt someone's feelings to the thought that someone could be trying to kill me right now and they could break in any second to get me. Now I just kind of accept it and let it go if it's something I can't control. "I can't control the way someone feels because of my past actions, but I can avoid repeating the same action." "Yeah, there is a miniscule possibility that someone could come in while I'm sleeping to kill me. Nothing I can do about it in that case. Time to sleep."

@user-fc7zc8tm2u that's good to know. He desevers it. I'm currently reading "Ego Is The Enemy." Man what an impact it's had. But im also reading "Lives Of The Stoics." Man what an amazing impact both these books have had. But like him, so many followers of his. I always start my day off with flipping to a random page in Marcus Aurelius's "Medations." It gets me excited to know I get to practice what he talked about in his journal. I love stoicism. I really appreciate Ryan for making it so much easier to understand, with videos like this. 👍

Regarding the reading I wonder if it would be better to read more books or to read few books more times. Stoicism started my interest in philosophy. Seneca said you should also read other philosophers and get more perspectives. He read Epicurus for example. Nowadays there are so much different views, it is incredible. Nietzsche, Kant, Schopenhauer, Dogen, Diogenes, Heraclitus, you name it. Why just stick with Stoic philosophers? Two lines that Ryan uses often aren't even coming from Stoic philosophers. "The obstacle is the way" comes from Hinduism I believe (can't remember exactly). And "amor fati" is from Nietzsche. It's not that I don't like Stoicism, but there is so much more to learn. And one thing I've learned is that even though different philosophies have different ideas, they somehow are mostly not at odds with each other.

Excellent, and a great reminder of what's important and what isn't. Whenever I watch videos like this, I always try to put myself in the shoes of someone with fewer advantages than me: not much money, precariously housed, children to look after, living in a part of the city with too much crime and violence. I'm sure these principles would still work for such a person, but I'm also certain that that person's life would be much harder than mine, and it makes me realise how lucky I am: good parents, nice home growing up, free education, good job, nice house.

The point of the “this is what I trained for” quote isn’t that EVERY moment is what you trained for-lots of moments are going to be good times to do more training, and if training is what you trained for then we are getting into some semantic silliness-it is that when moments arise in which there is a need for action (most action is not necessary) you should not cling to your books and weights to learn one more thing or do one more rep (or your covers for 5 more minutes in bed), but apply what you have and who you are to the task at hand until the task is done. Do you know what happens to performers who only perform and do not continue to practice? They get worse.

@@charliemarkovic4301 Thank you- I am a firm believer on the "Pareto Principle" of the 80-20 rule. Nothing makes us imagine the smell of Italian farmlands in the morning when we awake as the reminder the Pareto gives us between the dichotomy of the workers and owners of the farms and real estate assets=] Some have optimized it to the 90-10 rule. For me it is good to remember the origins of the "Minifundios" and "Latifundios" that Max Weber describes in the anthropology of agriculture of western civilizations. The modern concept of ownership focuses on the rights of a yeoman versus the rights to citizenship and ownership of a modern day "corporation".

“People who love what they do wear themselves down doing it.” I think that’s the greatest struggle for many of us; it’s certainly been my greatest struggle throughout life. I don’t love what I do. I do what I do to pay bills. The things I enjoy in life are things I’ve yet to figure out a way to monetize. Life feels more like an obligation than a gift when you can’t find a way to support yourself doing something that actually fulfills you.

I weed out new people fast. I ask. " what if you find out what you thought was correct isn't? Would you want it know? " There are two answers. 1. Yes. 2. Um, no or (my favorite) that depends.

hey Steve, could you elaborate? Do you mean "known" as in, the person being called out for being incorrect?

@@javiermeza2557 if someone can't handle admitting they WERE past tense they are not capable of handling truth so why waste any time on them

@@javiermeza2557it’s a probing question. If the person wants to know the truth, they are open to ideas. If they don’t want to know, they are closed minded and will refuse to listen. In my experience, people who are closed minded are not fun to be around and can be very pushy with their ideas (whether right or wrong). Sometimes just being open to listening to an idea that contradicts your beliefs can lead to amazing conversations and new ideas
