WS2812B is an intelligent control LED light source which integrates the control circuit and RGB chip into a 5050 component package. It includes a smart digital port data latch and a signal reshaping circuit for amplifying the drive.
The principle. The WS2812 have a small chip inside the module, which handle the incoming data and communicate with the next WS2812B in the serial.

Maybe do a WLED with the ESP8266 that you showed a couple of days ago.

I love these LEDs. The key question for me was "What can I do that has not been done before?" I found a PCB, available on Amazon and AliExpress, that has concentric rings of LEDs, and if you want you can break the rings apart. I found one of these with 241 LEDs, the outermost ring has 60 LEDs on it. 60 LEDs, like 60 minutes or 60 seconds. The next ring in has 48 LEDs, good for marking the quarter hour. Give it a RTC module and you have a clock! I have two of them, one for work, one for my office at home. Since the DS3231 RTC module has a battery backup it even keeps time when it is powered down. There are also strings of waterproofed WS2812b LEDs, good for decorating outdoors, like at Christmas. Just get creative!!!

Just because I'm no expert in electronics, but I would have though this needing a separated power supply. How come the Arduino can handle the current for all this leds? Thanks for the demo will try to get my hand on some of this, they look like a lot of fun to experiment with and use in different projects.

the arduiino is not supplying the current, a 5v supply is supplying the leds and the arduino, the light of the leds is controlled by serial data on the data pin of the first led which passes that serial data to the 2nd, and the 3rd etc, the leds themselves do the switching of the rgb light with their own built in little processor. with this method you can have as many leds as you want provided you have a power supply that can supply the current for them all being on at once. I used 400 12v versions of these leds and 5v for the arduino from a 12v+5v supply, used them on the tree last year

@@lezbriddon Oh I see. So the 5v just go thru the Arduino and it's not like if the 5v were coming from a pin set to output. I guess that's the key here.

You need to power the leds with direct voltage from power adapter 5v at least 2amps

@@mikeonthebox you got it. the 5v and 3.3v pins are not good enough for outputs, but have uses as references for sensors. also if your using one in a vehicle, the 12v from the vehicle will go as high as 14.5 and due to a cars system being noisy, you can easily see spikes upto 19/20v etc on older design vehicles. best to use a 12v->5v buck converter before the arduino/esp. most boards sold dont live long above 12v due to chep regulators being fitted

I guess you don't know the WLED software yet. Look it up. Use an ESP2866 or ESP32 with it and you can control your lights with your smartphone or pc directly with over 100 effects. You can even make it react to sound if you add a microphone board.
