I think the white paper below the Diode is reflecting and diffusing the IR-Light so that the Diode can be triggered from basically every direction? Not sure though. Am not really into Electronics knowlege tbh.

I guess the diode is detecting the infra red or heat from the flame. A proper remote receiver has to decode a stream of pulses before it recognises the code, so it is immune to a large blast of steady infra red light. But a very interesting project which can be used to detect a fire!

I find an exacto or box-cutter blade gets it started more easily than my fingernail, just be careful not to scratch the plastic.
