A small detail I noticed the other day that just had me lean back in my chair like "woah...." A friend set off a 500KG to deter some bots in a thick forest. The shockwave from the explosion could be seen travel through the trees. Looked so good. Funnily enough on the stealth frontier, the devs didnt program stealth. All they did was program detection senses for the enemies, sight, sound, and smell. They let the players figure out the rest.
@Keyce00139 ай бұрын
This isn't too different from Helldivers 1 mechanics. It was always safer to kill scouts before they could call reinforcements, so it was usually better to "stealth" the missions than let horde of enemies appear on screen to riddle you with hole. The only big exception was with boss fights since you were always in combat once the fight started, but we don't have those yet in HD2.

Speaking of scientific accuracy, a nifty little detail is that the rudimentary FTL technology used by Super Earth prior to stealing the fancy stuff from the Illuminate is called an Alcubierre Drive, which is a real life theoretical "warp" engine designed to compress space in front of a ship while expanding space behind--thereby bypassing the light-speed limit by technically not moving at all. Can confirm the smell. I was covered in bug guts on a terminal to deliver a SSSD card on a solo hard mission. A patrol of 3 brood commanders, 4 hunters, and 5 warriors came up and I laid flat and stayed still behind the terminal, and they walked within a meter of me in front of the terminal from right to left. (everything around the terminal had been flattened from an air strike I called down so it was just the terminal standing) their path put me in their field of view for a long time yet they were never alerted. I did have a recon armor set but even then they can see you about 8 meters away even while laying down with that armor. So while I’m sure they could see me, the smell of their hive mate’s guts and blood on me probably made them think I was a dead regurgitated civilian.

You can destroy a robot jammer by destroing (if one not always here) the fabricator under so you can just infiltrate to grenade, you don't need to call an hell bomb. With a long range weapon (quasar, recoiless or auto-cannon) you can destroy it from really far away by targeting the fabricator.
@smugsuphia78469 ай бұрын
Can confirm. I’ve taken out bot fabricators with the Quasar, although the shot has to be lined up with the vent. Reminds me of how the Rebels need a precise shot in the Death Star’s exhaust port in order to destroy it. Also, any sufficiently large explosion can destroy enemy tactical assets like Stratagem Jammers. Explosions from a Hellbomb or a bot fabricator that’s positioned near enough to the jammer can destroy it.

A couple more details I’ve noticed: This one is probably pretty well known by now, but the bots have a marching song that they’ll sing when they’re not in combat. Usually just the patrols sing it but I’ve heard the bots guarding fabricators sing it too. Sometimes enemies that come up from behind you won’t attack immediately. This seems to happen mostly with certain units like bot commissars or sometimes chargers for some reason. It makes for a good jump scare, though I’m not sure if it’s a bug or a feature. Sometimes scientists will jump on enemy grenades to protect you and/or their fellow scientists. Sometimes they’ll even yell something like “for my family!” it’s really funny

Another cool detail that the game even tells you about as a tip when dropping is that the angle of the orbitals will change based on your location in the map, your ship is on the center so calling an orbital around the center will have an almost 90° angle, meanwhile calling an orbital closer to the edge will cause it to come in at a more diagonal angle because you're further from the ship. 5:10 The lever on the Punisher and Slugger is actually a selector for which mag tube you're using. The shotguns have two separate mag tubes above the barrel, each containing up to 8 shells. So, when you go below half ammo in the mag, you're switching to the mag tube that's still full. It's a similar system to the Kel-Tec KSG. It's slightly unfortunate that there's no animation for your Helldiver actually flipping that switch, and it'd be really cool if we got a version in the future that has two different types of ammo in the two tubes; you could switch between them using the same selection UI that controls the scope, flashlight, and fire mode.
@smugsuphia78469 ай бұрын
One of the training manual tips on the loading screen mentions that the automatons are “hyper reactive,” meaning that their accuracy drops significantly when under fire. Also, the smaller infantry units can send up a red flare, calling in a bot drop. If you manage to take it out before the bot fires its flare, you can prevent enemy dropship reinforcements from coming. Of course, it’s easier said than done, as that window is very narrow, so I’d advise prioritizing those small infantry units if you have the luxury to do so (i.e., there isn’t a buzzsaw about to slice you into ribbon, a turret isn’t about to turn you into past tense, a Hulk isn’t about to smash you, etc.)

The lever indicator on the punisher and slugger is because those things are pretty much a shotgun barrel with a reloading tube on either side. The left tube is used first, then the lever flips over and feeds from the right tube. If you reload from less than 8 rounds in first person you can see that the right tube gets filled up first.

@quentinking43519 ай бұрын
Details I've noticed: The reload on the Recoilless Rifle is based on the real life Carl Gustav recoilless rifles, a very common anti-tank weapon that was invented in Sweden. The Senator secondary weapon is a based on a Colt Single Action Army (SAA), aka the Peacemaker revolver. This gives it a unique reload, as the Peacemaker had a loading gate that only passed one round at a time. So to reload, you open the gate, use an attached ramrod to eject each spent cartridge individually, then have to load each round one at a time. The game represents this with a paused after reloading before individual rounds are loaded. Idk if the unloading is animated, I've never had the calm situation to check it. Also the Helldiver does this at a very, very high speed--not impossible, but definitely into the realm of the best competition shooters. Also your Helldiver will do some gunspinning with the Senator, which is common amongst trickshooters. Modern revolvers usually have swing out cylinders that eject all rounds with a single hit of the ejector, followed by loading everything all at once with a speedloader--which is far faster. Many stupidly large magnum revolvers (like the Magnum Research BFR, which is commonly chambered for rifle rounds, not pistol calibers) still use the SAA gate loading, which is simpler to make and design to take those magnum pressures. I do find some irony in this, as a gentleman named Chuck Walla has a company that makes gun holsters. So I'm pointing out gun trivia to Chuck Walla--no, no, the other one.

Something I noticed just yesterday, if you are in your ship looking through the front window when your friends join, you can actually see your friends' ships warp in when they join you. It was wild when I first noticed.

If you are going to make a 3rd part to this at anytime heres one more related to drop pod based stratagems; you can take out bot factories or bug holes with them. Altho the called down pod gets destroyed in the process 100% of the time against the factory, but with bug holes theres some angles (mostly the top back of the holes) where you can land a pod that both survives and yet destroys the hole. I just found it out by accident with a sentry once and then I dedicated that entire play session to science it out if it worths doing or not. Well for the bugs, if you are in a tight spot and really want that last stalker hole to shut already it might worth one resuply into it, but other than that its not easy to land it right and save the pod to be used after, like using a sentry to both shut a hole and keep guarding the area too. Have to note that bug holes dont just destroy the pod, it literally goes down the hole and you cant even get to pick up the suply packets or support weapons because they are buried. With the bot factories tho, it might be worthwhile to take out by resuply or a support weapon, because that just scatters the packets around, but theres no angle I could find to land a sentry to survive the explosion, which is quite an explosion if you are up close so makes sense.

The stealth is actually really important. One time I was on a solo difficulty 7, and I needed to cross the map at the end of the mission. I was running the perimeter, but due to rock formations, I was cornered by a patrol that included a bile titan and two chargers. What did I do? I threw a 500 kg down an alley, then retreated. I watched as all the bugs charged down the alley looking for what made the sound, and I was able to run along where they came from, avoiding the certain death and escaping with all 3 super samples.

Putting tracers in the bottom of your magazines or loading machine gun belts with solid tracers toward the end is a real world trick that's been around for a while. Spinal Tap is a fake band from a comedy/fake documentary (This is Spinal Tap) and there's a famous scene where one of the band members is showing off his custom amplifier with volume knobs that go 1-11 instead of the usual 1-10. That's definitely where the volume going to 11 comes from. I'm pretty sure the reference to "E 710" is from an ancient joke about someone going into an auto parts store and asking for a "710 cap."

On the topic of smell: I think part of the implementation could be similar to Johnny's ability in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. He can detect the footsteps of survivors and track them down that way, so obviously the paths players take are stored in the match somewhere. And if there's another aspect to it like maybe the smell being transmitted on the air, then that might work similar to the pollution mechanic of Factorio, but perhaps with more consideration to wind direction (or not, who knows)

A clarification for #18: according to testing I saw in a video about laser weapons, planet temperature doesn't affect how long it takes for a weapon to heat up while being used, but DOES affect how long it takes for a weapon to cool down afterwards. So you can fire a sustained laser for just as long on a hot planet as a cold one, but it'll take much longer for that laser to be ready again afterwards.

The location of your ship can actually impact your Strategems. Orbital strategems can be blocked by terrain if its between you and the visible ship in the sky. Other things like Mesas on Fori Prime can also block things like Eagle Airstrikes, since the bombs are released early and strike the target at an angle. Ask me how I know.... (Its personal experience)

Enemy friendly fire has some cool moments. I had a Tank try and shoot at me and instead hit the stratagem jammer right behind me. No need to use the terminal or a hellbomb.

On your point about each Helldiver being a different 'person', have you noticed how every time you enter your Super Destroyer when leaving someone else's, the Helldiver comes out of a cryogenic pod? Their movement is slightly impeded and they are covered in frost, which slowly dissipates. So it is weird to think that 'you' is not really 'you', but just another soldier wearing the same outfit as the last one you killed 🥲 Also, it makes perfect sense from a sci-fi standpoint, where habitable planets are so far away from each other, you can't think that a single person can travel across in their lifetime.

Stalkers can smell you. You cannot hide from their line of sight. Also, yes those ships are other people’s and yes those stratagems and pods launching are in fact other players. That was confirmed earlier on. I guess since it’s live all the time they can do that. Also same goes on the planet if you look up and see other ships and beams.

so if you leave the map you will be branded a "traitor" but what actually happens when you extract as a "traitor" is there a secret dissedent execution cutscene on the ship??

Another one related to samples, the icon of the dropped samples on the map has that same mechanic. The icon can be a bit empty or totally full as well. So you can look for that if you have to decide which one to go for

Spinal Tap is a fictional band, from the film of the same name (kind of a mix of Iron Maiden/Black Sabbath, but there are also some Pink Floyd in there)... But the volume turning up to 11 is definitely a Spinal Tap reference.

Scout Striders bear a far more significant resemblance to the AT-RT's, being a single-person open-style walkers with a chain-mounted cannon. And certain Terminids, at least ones with the smooth heads like the Brood Commanders, seem to have a certain level of resemblance to the Xenomorphs from Alien...

Oh, you can fix the animation bug where you get stuck t-posed due to the SSSD by picking it up and then switching to your primary. You'll auto-drop it and be back to normal animations. If you use the defender, switch to your support weapon instead to drop the package and not get animation-bugged.

The destroyers while the player is on their destroyer are either simulated or just decoration. While I was standing on the bridge in my destroyer, did Valve shut down the servers for the weekly maintenance, and the destroyers in the background kept shooting down at the planet despite me not being connected to any servers.
