Sorry guys, when I checked Alien: Isolation on the XBox Game Pass page, it showed a release date of April 8 2020 and I didn’t think to double check. So it turns out that this is actually a game released in 2014, so no wonder it runs so well. Apologies for the mistake...

On my main PC, the windows update downloaded the wrong driver for audio, the audio waa missing and the driver was very new, almost 10 months for updated then the one available on my motherboard site. On my secondary pc, windoes update Windows didn't even search for audio drivers Also for Doom game, I found my GTX 1050Ti runs the game with some dips below 50 but on Ultra settings and the Nightmare shadow. Probably an optimization thing

You have Corsair XMS 2 from the purple heatspreader edition - this is certifiably OC-able to 950+ mhz . This CPU shoud easily hit 3.3 Ghz with ease. Now go and do that and redo the tests :)

I have this exact same setup and it runs beautifully (except cpu instruction compatibility). I did incremental updates between 2007 and 2012 (it currently has 120GB SSD + 2TB HDD, 16GB 1066MHz Memory, Q9550 and a Radeon 7870). I'm always blowned away of how incredibly modern this setup still feels in everyday use! It's not my main computer anymore, but I use it as a living-room PC for media consumption and light-weight multiplayer games like Overcooked, Dirt 3 etc. Out of curiosity I connected it to my main freesync display and tried modern games on it and was BLOWN AWAY! Some games still hit 60fps on 1080p, but others that don't reach that fraerate, Freesync display fixes all the stutters, and usually I found locking the fps to 45 was a wonderful middle ground. MUCH smoother and responsive than 30fps, but still not putting as much strain on the CPU. I will keep this computer for a very long time, because I'm curious how long you can actually play on it decently... the motherboard is 13 years old, and although it started as a core2duo I still feel like the modular nature of PCs shines bright with this one. who would've thought that I could play Doom Eternal on a 13 year old machine? (sure I had to patch the game with a SSE 4.2 fix, but still!)

I had the Q6600 on a DELL XPS420 for 11 years. The power supply had a design life of between 10 and 11 years. It died as designed. Still not bad. Unfortunately, the motherboard went with it, so I retired the rig. Blow out the dust every few months and replace the thermal paste annually...should last awhile longer.

I second this. In the Core 2 Quad days I ran into a few games that ran better with 2 cores than 4 enabled. It comes from how the C2Q uses the FSB to allow the 2 cores of the CPU to talk to the other 2 cores since a C2Q is just 2 Core 2 Duos strapped together. If the FSB is saturated your FPS will tank.

Awesome. I really enjoyed the vid Phil, as always. I have been looking forward to your Friday vid all day, and it didn't disappoint. The Core 2/Quad CPU were a big step up for Intel in performance and used a lot less power (compared to Pentium 4). I still have a e8400, Q6600 and a q9550 lying around and remember them fondly. They are excellent overclockers and that can be fun. But I agree, they have aged and are better suited to older games, barring the odd exception. Thank you so much for the vid Phil, I did really enjoy it👍

Both times I ordered a used Gigabyte Motherboard from Ali Express the Onboard Audio gave out after a couple days. Both were from this Era of Motherboards, one was an Intel 775 with DDR3 RAM & the other was an AM3 AMD with DDR3 RAM. The 775 Board was absolutely filthy, I had to give it a Bath. But despite that issue they work fine, I just got Sound Cards for both to get around that.

Used to have the venerable Q6600 (Quad duo) running in a DELL XPS420. For the last 6 of its 11 years in use, I did a BSEL mod to the CPU to change the FSB clock from 1066 to 1333 MHz. This shifted the core clock from 2.4Ghz to 3.0Ghz under a locked BIOS. A 25% overclock. People with unlocked branded motherboards could go much higher (3.5Ghz easy) with a decent cooler. The DELL was a BTX design, so no possibility to do that upgrade. The mod is very simple. A very small piece of black electrical tape placed over ONE pad that is located just above the right notch on the far right side of that CPU. CPU orientation in defining Right versus Left: Lid face down, socket notches oriented right and left facing the eye, with the notches closer to the CPU's bottom edge. Carefully place the small piece of insulative tape over that single pad with tweezers. Carefully insert the CPU in the socket and voila...3.0Ghz right off of the bat. Best and most stable overclock in my experience, given the OEM limitations imposed in the bios. duckduckgo.com/?q=Q6600+BSEL+mod&t=chromentp&atb=v209-1&ia=images&iax=images&iai=http%3A%2F%2Flivedoor.blogimg.jp%2Fjhjn%2Fimgs%2Fa%2F0%2Fa0147251.JPG

Socket 775 won't surrender soon! Hey, Phil, the day before I upgraded a friend's laptop. From a Pentium T4200 @2.0GHz (and measly 1MB L2 cache) to a Core 2 P9600 @2.67 GHz, 6MB cache, 1066 MHz FSB; also doubled the RAM from 4GB to 8GB (DDR3). This doubled the Cinebench scores!!! The system feels very responsive for everyday ordinary use. Comparing to your Cinebench scores, I have 136 cb/73 single core (R15 score) and 293/160 pts (R20 score). Yours are 273 and 576 respectively but for a quad core, so the results are scaled extremely well.

Phil, if you play with core affinity on older games, you can eventually get much better performance. On some games I can get stable 80-100fps with game running on 2 cores rather than the stuterry mess 20 to 60fps with all 4 cores. This is a well known Windows problem and people use to blaim Ryzen for the stutters, but it actually happens on Intel as well. If anyone is struggle to just play a older title, Crisys on the video is a great exemple, where Windows try to spread the load on 4 cores and we know the game is pretty much single/dual core designed. Atom/Celeron machine can also benefit from this. Go to Task manager/details and select from there, if want to make it persistent use Process Lasso.

Fun, mostly irrelevant fact: The memory and FSB base clock would be synced, but the actual transfers wouldn't because the FSB is quad pumped (ie. Sends data 4 times per clock) while DDR is dual pumped. But that's an easy "good setting" as that allows the CPU plenty of bandwidth for GPUs, storage I/O and the other cards you may or may not have. (Personally, I tend to go for a tad over half - I have a 1600Mhz FSB and 1066Mhz CL5 DDR2 for my C2Q retro rig, although I might muck around with bumping FSB clocks if I decide to go dual GPU on it.)

I did beat Alien Isolation with this setup. SLI GTX460s (yes Crossfire board). The only setting that really matters is the floor reflections. Plenty of guides online. The hardest part is near the end when there's fire, but at the start (in the Med Lab) is also taxing on the system, probably a slight optimisation issue. Long live 775. Very nice video! I built a computer similar to this for my youngest son a couple of days ago, and I think that it performs very well. Your advice in this video will become very handy for me and will make him very happy. The computer has a Core2 Quad Q9550, a Geforce GTX 970, and 12 gigs of RAM. I know that I created a giant bottleneck with the CPU/GPU combo, but I wanted to be able to upgrade the motherboard/CPU if my project failed. I don't agree with your assessment that the games (Fortnite, for instance) run poorly. When I was a kid, I ran Doom on a 386SX, so I'm damaged for life when it comes to detecting poor FPS.

@@philscomputerlab Yes, it is DDR3, which is handy if I want to upgrade to something newer. As stated in other comments, the 775 motherboards are very likable. They are (in my opinion) not quite retro, yet they often have retro features. I get the feeling that this platform will get the same status as the Pentium III Tualatin among retro enthusiasts in 10 to 20 years. Maybe I'm having too warm feelings towards this platform, but I think that there is something that stands out with it.

Good video, keep it up! ..775 today needs clock speed to have a chance, That chipset is not known for great overclocking, You'd probably hit a wall before 360fsb which is not good when you are starting out at 333. I would use a Q6700 over a Q9400 on that motherboard (Q6700 starts at 266fsb) , you'd probably get around 3.4ghz or so. Run your memory as fast as it will go, I don't know if that motherboard has a "memory divider" with the fsb but even if it doesn't I would still run the ram as fast as it will go.

Nice video. Yes.. the LGA775 is "dead" for modern games/e-sport today. Apex Legends was the title that killed it. The platform in 2019 did struggle with Fortnite - unless you have a Quad (45nm with 12mb Cache) clocked at least @3.4 with 1066@cl5 RAM) and the good P45 or X48 chipset. Even then, it still has some (minor) lag spikes in Fortnite (thanks to the updates on that game = forced obsoletion) Today we need the first gen i7 for that. LGA1366 that is. Low input lag, high memory bandwidth Less than 2 months ago, I got a cheap LGA1366 rig with the i7-920(the first C1) with a OEM Packard Bell mainboard (No OC). What surprised me is how this 11+ year old 2.66 GHz warm running beast. thanks to memory bandwidth and hyperthreading, still handles modern games. Coupled with 12 gig Triple-channel and a GTX 680 2GB videocard, it can do Fortnite at 60+ FPS smooth as well as GS:GO at 100+ FPS. Even the more demanding new titles at 30+ FPS. Minimal stuttering... But low settings in demending AAA-titles, thanks to only 2GB VRAM. Get a card with 4GB, and you are on for 1080P medium settings pretty smooth on that old platform. Even better with a 3+ GHz. 6c/12t CPU . The X58 is one superb old platform, that still hangs on in 2020. Not so fast, but is has the low-end torque to get you though the mud. But I guess this is next to go. My guess is, they will implement "require" (even if not nescessary) AVX instuctions on more future games, and that will make this solid platform "obsolete" next.

If you are absolutely strapped for cash and running something even older/ slower then sure. That processor should still be fine when paired with entry to mid level GPUs from 2019 and maybe from 2020. It will perform a same like in this video. Even something like gtx960 is overkill for this CPU. Maybe with OC and with faster memory you can get few FPS more but that's it. In these days when we read that latest new low-end CPU beat few years mainstream gaming one (r3 3xxx vs i7 7700) it will be really too much to expect anything from more than decade old CPU. Hey Phil. Thanks for posting this one. As soon as I saw the motherboard I knew where this was going. I built a retro gaming PC a couple of weeks back with a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and a Radeon HD7850. The intention was, Use the best "Worst" components I had that were supported under Windows XP. I have not been disappointed. All the games I used to play in the late 90's - early to mid 2000's have worked so far that I haven't been able to use in so long. I'm as happy as a pig in sh..... mud. The setup you built tested in this video. Would I recommend it ? Heck yes if that goal means no expectation to run software produced after around 2012. The first old game I tried that I haven't been able to play was Psygnosis's Lander with a Glide wrapper installed. Works flawlessly. Next will be Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed. I can't wait :)

I think this could pair well with something like an R9 390. Saw some going for $65 before all this stuff happened. Of course though it'd depend on what you can get for what price that's reasonable really and for a "balanced" system you'd want something more around a $20-$30 graphics card.
