Federer is for me especially a very good first serve returner. I mean how many time do we see Federer returning absolutely huge serves such as Roddick’s serve, Isner, Karlovic, Raonic. His backhand block return is one of the best defensive shot on the tour not too mention his terrific reflex and anticipation. His second serve returns are solid, not as good than his first serve return, he is very good at attacking the second serve from the forehand side. It’s his backhand return on the second serve that can get a bit iffy. They are days where his backhand return on the second serve is not there. He tries to hit through the backhand more, late in his career with varying results. Often it’s a good indicator of how confident he is on the court when his aggressive backhand returns are effective.

A very sound analysis. Like I say, Fed's interest in "getting the ball back" so the point can properly start is a big part of the reason for his passive second-serve RoS.

@@thesoccergod I think the chip, passive return of serve from the backhand side is a shot that worked more in his prime years where his mouvement was terrific back then, but as the years went on, you could see that the passive chip backhand on the second serve return was getting less and less effective, particularly on break points against his main rivals, and started to hit more top spin backhand return, with sometimes very good success and sometimes not. The aggressive backhand return of serve is for me a shot he should have used a bit more earlier on in his career, overall, as it suits his natural attacking game more.

Without doubt, Federer is the most talented, beautiful, vesatile player ever to play tennis. Variety of shots he plays, is far more than combined of Nadal or Novak. His volley , stop volley, backend, forehand and dropshots are very pleasing to watch. To play for 20 over yrs with very high consistency is simply amazing. And above all, he is very humble, down to earth always easy going with his fans and media. We hardly read or hear ppl say bad things abt him. It is astonoshing to know that he has never retired half way in 1500 plus matches he has played. This shows how much he loves Tennis.. No other player has this effect on public past 50 yrs plus. No wonder he gets so much love, respect and attention from Reporters, players and public.. Even if Novak wins 25 Slams, he can never match talent, skill, charishma, elegance and popularity of Federer. Novak may go down as Goat but Federer is Lion ( king who rules)..👌🏻👌🏻..

Totally agree. He is not as good as Nadal or djokovic on those aspects, but he is still a beast. The main reason why is break point conversion is 3% lower than both of his rivals is because of his attacking game, which is prone to unforced errors. His return qualities are incredible, he can return even the biggest servers such as karlovic,isner or raonic.

Indeed, most people say that djokovic is more complete, but they don’t know the difference between complete and efficient. Djokovic has the most efficient game, being a big threat on all courts, but Federer game is amazing in every skill related to tennis. Even his return or backhand, which are suposively his worst shots, are still amazing and can be very lethal. Djokovic smash and volley are really bad for a player of his status, same goes for Nadal serve and attacking game.

Wonderful video as always Raz! It’s a pity we didn’t see his 140+ mph return against Roddick at the 2007 USO or his multiple return winners against Karlovic at 2012 AO. There’s some other notable ones I remember too: the opening point of his 2010 USO semi against Djokovic where he hit an acute backhand inside-out angle off a 120 mph serve… - The crazy down-the-line chip vs Fognini, Wimby 2012, 115 mph - The time he DEFLECTED a *142 mph* serve against Groth at the 2014 USO - Magical backhand blocks against Isner first serves at USO 2015 in the second set tiebreak - Inside-out forehand return winners against Nadal at the 06 and 07 Wimby finals - *And lastly the match-saving crosscourt backhand he hit down championship point 7-8, 30-40 against Nadal in Wimby 08 while pissed off*

The Fed is tennis incarnate. A never-before-never-again phenomenon. I've always thought his return was underrated...and many intelligent commenters have pointed out those qualities that make the Fed such a good returner. They've also mentioned certain deficiencies, like his somewhat passive second-serve returns, especially on important points like BPs. Despite his ability to hit RoS winners and despite having hit countless such over his career, I think the passivity is attributable to Fed's overall mindset of wanting to get into the point. Once that happens, he can become the more offensive player, but the idea of making a UE by going for a big return is what holds him back. I don't think it's been a great tactic...but, then again, you can't really change someone's temperament. Here's a statistic taken from a bunch that I compiled when examining the minutiae of the Djokovic-Federer H2H. The fact that the Djoker has a fair claim to being the greatest RoS in the Open Era (he may not do as well as Fed against the _really_ big servers but his RoS, on the whole, is sublime) _and_ has a pretty good serve _himself_ is what makes Fed's BP ratio particularly impressive. "In Bof3 matches, the Fed-Djoker H2H is 16-16 (with matches played between 2006-2019). For these 32 matches, the in-match statistics for the Fed are: PD = 1.05; GD = 1.15; BP ratio = 1.05 (he even leads this against possibly the game's greatest returner...confirming my opinion that Fed's return is highly underrated); total points won = 50.6%; games won = 51.5%; sets won = 52.6%. In short, the Fed leads the Djoker in every one of these categories , an astonishing feat." As usual, some unseem gems in this, Raz. Thanks! P.S: I do wish you'd go back to your old intro. I don't remember it exactly any more, but I'm certain it was more...soothing. 🙂

🙏👍 He doesn't have the most titles, it's true... but he's probably the best tennis player the world has ever seen. But the world is only now starting to realize it. Rafa, Djoker, Murray, Edberg, Borg, McEnroe, Alcaraz, are all fantastic incredible super good tennis players, Djoker is deservedly the most successful of them all. But only Federer had this genius, this playfulness. The closest is probably Sampras?! I miss Federer extremely watching tennis.

the physics roger utilizes for most of these returns is so elegant in its simplicity: firm racquet, precise angle, and use the opponent's velocity rather than have to supply it himself. the impressive thing is the physiology it takes to execute these physics. from his elbow, forearm, wrist and grip, he has to be one of the strongest players since laver.

The serve is always an exciting start to a point. It's where the server has the best advantage to put in a speedy hard serve, but yet also exposes the server to a good receiving shot as well. Roddick's super serves for example at high speeds leave him exposed because he's yet to recover his footing position from the exertion of the serve. If like Roger, you have lightning quick reflexes to hit a return in such a way as to take advantage of the momentum of the served ball by roddick, you get that point a few times.

It’s good tactic too serve at Federer’s forehand when you serve mainly to the backhand side. Not only does it fool the player, it also makes the backhand return more exploitable. Some player had pretty good success against roger with this pattern of play. Then again how good is Federer backhand block/return !

Nadal's serve was one of the most difficult for RF to return. They have played so many times and, even with Rog in his prime and in the period when's Nadal's serve wasn't very good, he has not been able to attack Rafa's serve. Well, none of Rafa's shots in general... Up to recent years..
