My parents grew up Dominican Republic, came to the States, and made a good life. Eventually they went back and retired in the Dominican Republic. The Hell and scams they went through are too hurtful to remember or to mention. Twice they literally had their home emptied out everything was taken even the toilet paper the house was empty. Like no one ever moved in, every single thread of anything was taken. Keep in mind that happened twice in 15 years. One day my father went back to the States for vacation that very same night they came in, tied my mother up, put up hoodie on her, and stole everything from the house. Another scam was hiring some construction workers my father paid them he got receipts and everything was fine a month later they took it to court saying they never got the tens of thousands dollars that he paid them. After they built a nice luxurious outdoor area with a roof and bathroom some cops decided that it was now theirs and everyday they came they slept and played Domino's in the outdoor area. The latest, is the chemotherapy doctor that was robbing her blind, that wasn't even giving her the real chemotherapy. Also the fake doctors claiming they can cure her. I keep sending her many thousands of dollars and it goes straight to witch doctors and quacks claiming they can cure her cancer with roots. If it wasn't scammers it was their own friends and relatives constantly harassing for money they literally stole my heritance. After my mother passes away ,she has terminal cancer, I swear I will never step foot on the country or speak one word to any of my family members who stole from her as well. For me, my Dominican heritage is an embarrassment and to all my relatives in the DR, all my family and I were ATM (cash machines). I rememeber seeing a close cousin of mine that I grew up with. I mean as youth we were so close. Two peas in a pod. I saw him and I was so emotional, I recalled all the fond memories full of childhood memories. He invited me over to meet his family and have dinner. I was overjoyed. After dinner the scam for money began and he immediately started begging for thousands of dollars each time I said no he got more and more aggressive. I went to the bathroom and cried. This person who I had such fond memories growing up and couldn't wait to see treated me like a cash machine. I didnt give him a cent!!! AFTER MY MOTHERS FUNERAL I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN THAT DAMN COUNTRY OR EVER TALK TO MY FAMILY WHO TREATED MY FATHER, MOTHER, AND I LIKE NOTHING BUT CASH MACHINES. ROT IN HELL D.R.

I went to DR - Puerto Plata for the second time. First time I did not have any issues. My second trip my taxi driver was involved in an accident, he could not afford to pay the damages and threatened me to pay. In addition he stole all my personal belongings. I went to the Canadian Embassy and the individual working didn’t even speak English! Went to the court house to file a complaint, the judge refused that I should be refunded when I wasn’t driving and already paid the driver when I did not even arrive to my destination. My idea of a holiday away from the place that I call home does not for one minute include this country. I've been to the DR seven times over the last 8 or 9 years and in my experience, you just have to be a smart traveler, just like any where else in the world you go. I never exchange currency, I pay for everything in US dollars and its never a problem. I also make sure I check before hand what the going rate of exchange is before I visit. In all my travels I have felt nothing but welcoming people, who are gracious and hospitable. Now I don't go wondering about on my own, that's only being a smart traveler. I have also made some really good friends in my visits there that I see on my return visits. And don't be afraid to barter prices on everything from cigars to trinkets. If there are scams then you need to educate yourself and just don't be stupid. That's good advice for any traveler. Do your research, take the time to know what you'll run into. My best advice, stay at one of the big reputable resorts and you'll be just fine. It's a fantastic country and don't be afraid to go for a visit. Just be aware that you are a tourist and act accordingly.

@@benajminpadilla6360 I also agree. Mr. Yasaitis is completely wrong. In addition, I would urge people to avoid this country. I have just returned from a stay in Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. They are completely opposite in character. I had very few problems in Punta Cana but at Las Americas I was scammed by the police for DOR 1600! I actually was thinking of relocating here but when the Punta Cana site manager told me DR in his view is the #1 fraud capital. He related several instances of real estate fraud he knew personally as it relates to getting clear title in real estate transactions! If you cannot trust a licensed attorney nor the judiciary, then I throw in the towel.

Mark Yasaitis. I myself being a Dominican who have traved to many countries I consider your advice to be truely educated. That goes true to any place where you visit. In any country even the so called developed countries you got to be careful where you go and the time to walk by. This video is so sad and hope we in the Dominican Republic may improve our tourism business. So thank you for your educated advice. I also hope next time Mr T.visit the DR things may be different. interesting, then it must be corrupt at every level just like here, as then no-one around the scammer seem to care if they ripped off a foreigner, as the observers or amigo's they brag too, are often scammers as well. Hi Clara, thanks for watching! One thing we learn over the years here on the North Coast, is that a large percentage of the locals have turned into natural hustlers, so once they see you as a new-bee Gringo in their town, then they are fast to use a variety of methods to get something from you, whether money, food, drinks or stuff. This mentality I believe is also called "Penny smart, Pound stupid!" - but when you live here, they eventually leave you alone (as you've now turned them down enough times, and they recognize you're an expat). DR is a predator/prey culture. Did you know it's common for the folks in DR to say they have a "pension", cause they have a relative in DR. Every dominican wants to go to the US and send money back their family. First couple of years the family in DR say "thank you so much for the money", then it turns to "where's my money", then it turns to "where is the money you owe me". Seriously, I was once sending money to a relative and one month skipped the monthly gift, because of some car repairs, the next month they call me and tell me that I owe them twice the amount...😂. I told them keep track of how much I owe them and hanged up the phone and never cent another penny.
@GalaxieMarauder3 жыл бұрын
@@JT-xf9sw yea joe that does happen just like you said. Exactly! Or they think the family here has it easy by sending money not knowing of the sacrifices and will waste it. My wife then sent money for her mom to buy medicine. Her cousin took the money and spent it on herself wasting it thinking money was easy to get in the US so it would be nothing to send another remesa. So with that she never sent another dollar that way. She sent the money to the pharmacy and had them deliver the medication to the house.

I like the Dominican Republic but I think there are a few things that need to be fixed : 1) the Currency Exchange at the international airports where literally 1/4 of the dollar goes to the currency exchange office at the airport 2) the Taxi transportation service at the airport going downtown where the total price is fixed and not negotiable 3) the local Hotel you booked on Expedia which happens to be in fact a regular below-average apt building with no day hours security and no porter to help take your bags into your suite which turns out to be a plain furnished studio 4) the average Restaurant or coffee=sandwich place where NO price is listed on the menu. All these issues could be fixed quickly by organizing Business Associations registered with the local government and maintaining some minimal standards of operation .

This is why I made this documentary, as "To be fore-warned, is to be fore-armed!" Thanks for watching! Brgds Mr.T

if you don't want to be scammed then you need to stay away from the tourist areas go to San Diego or some other upscale community like that that's away from tourist areas and you will be left alone plus there are many English speaking people from all over that actually live there... very good restaurants excellent prices e t c

im dominican and you are right, unfurtunatelly the problem starts with lack of laws and shameless politicians. and obviously is something that good citizens cant do anything about it we could end up in jail or as you might know giving money to the police, even for me, they think im a foreigner so you can tell is something I cant avoid until they hear me speaking

Thanks for watching and commenting Abrihan! Yes in any country, when police gets involved in law abuse rather than law enforcement, then our taxes are used to kit folks up in uniforms and arm them only to abuse the very people who made it possible for them to get that job in the 1st place. As they say, if the fish stinks, it stinks at the head (Governments cause most chaos and suffering to us all - they are the bastards!)

Thanks Mr. T. Great info. You gave many advises to prevent to be scammed . But I missed one little thing. At least knowing the basics of Spanish language or better a little more. First thing when I start living in the Philippines was learning the language, even the majority speaks English. A great help and the moment people know, you understand them and also can reply, they're getting more careful. Also here the people are very nice to you, but......you have the "" wrong color "" and that means $$$. Especially in a country which is rather pore. In short, don't put your head above the grass field, showing your "wealth". Saying that all, I also admit it's a great place to be. I'm here for over 4 years and I don't miss EU at all. Well, have a great time there and keep up the good work.

After hearing about all the scams, and if your hurt, no help until money is paid up front, Who in their right mind would want to go anywhere near this place, I know I won't. Especially knowing that the cops are even on the take?? So who do you turn to if you get robbed?, the Police, lol who'll rob you again, no thanks. This just changed my mind for good.

We got robbed by a couple of youths. For some reason they returned the two laptops in the early hours next morning. They were doing a special clamp down on crime so they sent a top cop to take care of us. He caught the perps straight away and told me to say I wanted them sent to POP jail. The parents and some locals begged me not to say yes as they were teenagers. I had to say yes as the cop was someone you don't reason with. We had to get an uncle who had a car to drive us to the jail. We sat next to the robbers. They were thrown into a cell with a lot of nasty looking people. A couple of Haitians turned up wailing and crying. A family turned up and passed a take out through a hole in the wall. I had to buy the cop his lunch across the road. At the end of the day we went to see the Fiscal. He asked us how much money was stolen. He told the uncle that the kids would be released if he signed a promise to pay? Everybody was released and on the way home the cop pulled out my wife's wedding rings and asked my wife if they were hers. We actually got everything back.

I was considering a trip to the DR. After this video and more research on other websites I will not visit the DR. I enjoy blending in with local population but with all the common sense warnings given I wouldn’t enjoy myself and would always be in the defensive concerned about my safety. I don’t have time to filter how who is dishonest and who is good. I’m there to enjoy their culture and the country. I’ll just go back to Panama 🇵🇦 to enjoy myself and not have to bother with unethical people as pointed out in the DR

One thing i will never ever do there is rent a car, ever!! I had a great time here on my first trip, but I was careful of who I got involved with. I managed to make a lot of friends, but I also walked away with my things as well. I can't stress this enough..Lock up and safeguard your valuables at ALL times. Ask yourself if you really need to bring expensive watches, jewelry and other items. If you drink, pace yourself and keep an eye on your drinks. It's easy to have a good time and let your guard down. This is a must see video for anyone going there for the first time.

@mmafan35 жыл бұрын
@@iamjasmine2415 I would highly advise against it and this is not a statement of doubt against your ability to drive one. If you haven't before in the DR it's not you it's the other drivers. The risk is greater than the thrill and convenience. If you need to get around take a taxi. I rode in a car and we were almost hit 4 times. Red lights and stop signs are optional there. Plus the roads around Sosua are not in the best condition. I can't tell you what to do but that's my advice.

As a Dominican, I always go out with very little money I keep it hidden in private places too, and I make sure to stay nearby family (the good family, because some family scam me too). I asked for my neighbors numbers in case of an emergency and I had the same taxi guy for the whole trip, I tipped him well because I felt safer with him. 90% of the people are very lovely, the worst people you will meet are near the tourist areas and the hoods. Do not be flashy and always look poorer than what you are to avoid false interest. Stay safe!

This video is essential viewing for tourist thinking of visiting the DR, but don't let it scare you the DR is a safe place for tourist. If you want to avoid exposure to most of these scams then stay in one of the many all-inclusive-resorts in Punta Cana or the North Coast (Puerto Plata, Sosua, Caberate). If you want to experience the real DR and mingle with the locals then the all-inclusive-resort is not for you. Staying in local small mom-n-pop hotels may put you more at risk (scams) but its the only way to learn about the country and its people you are visiting. Heed the advice from those who came here before you and assume everyone you meet does not have your best interest in mind (this does not mean their bad). If you are single and plan to stay long term, avoid making a Chapiadora or Sanky-panky your significant other.

No matter how much I have told him no. He will eventually ask again. Sounds like there are nothing but scammers and beggars there. He doesn’t listen when I tell him suggestions for how to do things better. He really thinks he can just beg his way into a better life. It’s insane!!! He works long hours daily but he is unwilling to try anything else when he doesn’t have customers to supplement his money accept just begging me

Down here, what you see is what you get! Don't try to educate the adults (unless they are keen to learn). With suppliers of anything, it's about finding the "Diamonds" (Quality People) and then give these rare few your business, as they bothered to mature, learn, be respectful, flexible and honest. Then life suddenly becomes so much more like the paradise you dreamed of. Brgds Mr.T

@@EducatedTraveler well this guy I met online last year and we have had a real chance at a good relationship. We have communicated daily face time and all that. We really did fall in love, but when he would go thru those phases when his business doesn't go well, he will ask for my help. I have sent him a little money a couple times, but it's just my personal policy not to give ppl money like this. I'm a business owner myself, and I've had to learn different ways to improve things with my money on my own, I don't go around asking ppl for money. I love him, and I understand hard times of slow days and when customers or clients no show, but I also know you must find other ways to supplement if self employment is what you choose to do. I just have no sympathy for this, and absolutely can stand begging or attempts at manipulation of my feelings. We broke up last year because I told him I needed more time before I could visit, since my oldest daughter was against it, and my younger kids had a big school trip to Disney I was also going on. He got mad about being put off. It took him months to cool off. In the meantime we both saw others. I won't be manipulated, used, bullied or pushed into anything I don't want to do, like taking a trip before I'm ready, or being made to feel like I should allow him to borrow money. I'm not moved by this stuff. His financial issues are his problem. If he wants me to connect him with someone to get him a work Visa to come to the States to work on his stuff, I can do that, but I'm not supporting him where he is. I don't give men money like that. That is of no benefit to me.

Hi! I assume it's Miss Harris? Books can be written on the similar stories we keep hearing from folks down here. The main thing us foreigners take a long time to finally admit about most of the Dominicans in tourist areas are here is, that to them "YOU ARE THE OPPORTUNITY!!!" You've heard the analogy of the "goose that lays the golden eggs" - Well to them "WE ARE THE GOOSE!" And the day we ADMIT that despite their good looks and amazing charm, if all they truly want to do, is to "slice pieces out of the goose" rather than help you bring in more of the golden eggs, then all we've really found is a another SMOOTH HUSTLER!! To take a hard-core example, among the prostitution in the streets and bars, you see the "pretentious love" fly out the window in a micro second, where i.e. a good looking charming lady has emotionally massaged a man for 5 minutes to 2 hours even caressing him, kissing him and even telling him she loves him, after which she asks him how much you pay me? or she spins him a sob story (lie) about her dire financial situation. When the man doesn't offer her enough or he says I'm not looking for a relationship based on paying out money all the time, then often these girls will dump him in a heart beat, only found to be trying to pull the same stunt off in another bar one hour later with some other lonely dude. Again "WE ARE THE OPPORTUNITY" - to them the game is HUSTLING US for a much as possible, whether that be money, stuff, trips, paying for their studies etc... I suggest you watch my video on finding love in the DR, as the guests whom I interviewed explains it based on painful experiences: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXK2pZV4Ys13a7s Feel free to comment, Brgds Mr.T

It's a Poor contry for a sustancial population and a welthy one for a few couple tho, sometimes the system does not work here for their own Dominicans, not everthing is bad. I hope some Day people turn 180° to change the bad into good and their goberment as well to avoid corruption.

Thanks! If enough good people elect someone fair, honest and tough for the top, only then will the corruption get concurred, until then it will unfortunately stay as it is. Brgds Mr.T

@@renesantana7782 My assumption to your comment is that you are a local ?? Your statement !!don't come if you don't want to !! tells me that you are happy with the way travellers tourists and your own residents live amongst all this scamming and other crime that you as a local are happy with this situation to continue ??? My assumption is that is why there will be no changes made to improve the much required negative comments made by harrassed travellers that tour your country. A new year has started good time to change your own attitude! That is probably a good place to start Cheers

When I go to DR I always bring my gf who is from there. No price gouging and her aunt is a retired general. No harassment from the local police

lol... I guess being portrayed in the media as "the scary black man" serves a valuable purpose sometimes. Because I've been to DR at least half a dozen times (and Brazil, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, etc...) and the sketchy types don't even bother approaching my wife and I in any of those places. So thankfully, we haven't had to deal with any of this nonsense.

Hi Sean and thanks for watching + commenting! Many foreigners don't give the locals the impression "don't mess with me!" and quickly they become the victims of various scams. So if they can pick up tips on what to look out for and how to handle situations, this should hopefully keep the cash in the rightful owners pockets. Happy travels ahead, Brgds Mr.T

KZbinr Beau Rakes doesn't seem to have much problems with scammers either...probably because he looks a bit intimidating too. Those are the only tourists that enjoy themselves there, it seems.

I'm Dominican, from New York, I play them, they don't play me. Be tough always. I'm tough as shit. Nobody plays me, NOBODY, Unfortunatley, gringos get played all the time. It's sad that we treat people like this. All poor countries do this. I plan on retiring there when I get older. Live a great life there and pay no property taxes. NO PROPERTY TAXES!!!!!!!!!

Just got back from D.R. July 2019. Rented ATVs with friends one day in D.R. While waiting for left turn at a corner, a local rider lost control of his motorcycle, fell off and landed next to my ATV. A local witness raced him to the Clinic while other witnesses and bystanders argued, in Spanish, about the accident. Me and my friends rode off to a restaurant, maybe 15 minutes away from the accident scene. An hour later the police showed up at the restaurant and said a few Locals witnessed me hit the man and then rode off. Long story short, after a few hours at the police department, and a call fo the U.S. embassy, I wasn't arrested but the ATV was sieged and they came to my rental home, a day later to further harass me with questions and a copy of my ID. Thankfully we had a few people with us that spoke fluent Spanish and knew the scams the locals are into. This happened in Las Terenas. I'm not sure if that's considered the North Coast but the police were crooked. They wanted me to pay his Clinic bill. Other then that great place to visit. My advise, stay away from the neighborhoods.

Hi Reem, Thanks for watching and for commenting! Yes the cops here are crocked, and that's why we see a lot of law abuse rather than law enforcement. Yet here in DR, they usually only approach Gringo's when they see an opportunity i.e. accident, potential drug use, burglary, commotion etc... and to help eliminate this, they need to be exposed by brave people (only then do fingers get slapped in the police hierarchy). The human rights president here goes on TV quite often, so whenever I have a clip of some abuse, then I send him the clip to expose. In Sosua / Cabarete things have become much better in terms of eliminating the hustling / scamming of tourists and expats by police, as they've learn't we don't tolerate any of their BS, and we can afford and will use lawyers to have them fired if they push their luck. The Haitians don't fight back, so they get picked on and extorted constantly, but some of us are working on changing this too. Brgds Mr.T

Hi Mark, thanks for watching! Well many do chose to go elsewhere, where there's rights for everyone, not just the locals. In DR it's very much about both knowing what the typical scams are, as well as what connections one has to get untangled from trouble as a Gringo here in case it hits you. It's a steep learning curve for most who try to settle here, however if it's just a short vacation and you're booked into a decent hotel with a knowledgeable owner in walking distance to everything, then it's just a matter of learning how to handle the hustlers and vendors, the rest is paradise. Brgds Mr.T

DR "Turismo" needs to wake up and realize that a foreigner who's been slaving away in their job or business back in their country to afford a vacation to DR, they don't want to see another city, but instead want Sun, Sand, Surf and party time. So they will look for a tropical beach town, and it's the DR Governments responsibility to ensure that well behaved Tourists, Expats and potential investors get treated like gold, as only this way will they come back and recommend this destination to others. Simple ABC's but corruption and scams at every level seem to be winning, very sad for a place with so much potential. Being an Island, they should make "Effective Tourism" a very important subject in school, an frequently invite guest speakers in from other countries.

Born and raised in sosua he is right 100% it got better with the time the 80s and 90s . Was even worse. We are a poor country and a lot of people do a lot scams to survive or raise a family resort are the best way to go one day when I become president of the Dr. I would stop the scam for ever and a ever I promise you
