Onix is actually a masterpiece of design. Its design makes for a very intimidating Pokémon for children who are fighting the very first gym of the series, but its poor stats make it a very easy opponent to defeat. Basically, he is the Pokémon equivalent of fathers letting their children win a fight just to boost their self-confidence

Speed Stat isn't entirely just how fast they move, it's more about how fast you attack. For example vikavolt is fast, but he just might need a long charge up for an attack, hence low stats in speed
@14akamaru
@14akamaru 8 ай бұрын
That's a good theory. I just figured it was based on reaction time, meaning Pokemon that can move fast lore-wise yet have low Speed stats are either slow at processing the command, or are trying to not disobey immediately, causing a pause.

Attack and special attack are some of the least defensible ones, speed is one I think is the easiest to defend because these are combat stats being show not stats for how they move at traveling speed. A lot of super fast things are handicapped by smaller arenas and the like where turning is required more frequently
@TheBT
@TheBT 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, it has always felt more like reflexes than top speed. A featherweight boxer would have a higher 'speed' stat than a sprinter because they would beat them to the punch. The one that I also feel is misrepresented is defence, HP is the stat that determines how much damage something can take and defence is how difficult it is to land a good blow. Whether that be an evasion tank or in a full set of armour. Kartana, very tricky to hit properly but can't take much damage

For speed you left out Dragonite. I feel like it is worth noting that speed doesn’t mean how fast you can move, it’s more how long it takes to “charge up” an attack. That’s why electrode and regieleki are so fast despite being just spheres, one is a primed bomb, and the other is just made of electricity, no “charging up” necessary, just touch ‘em and it’s used Thunderbolt.
@bidoof6458
@bidoof6458 Жыл бұрын
Just want to point out that the examples you gave aren't great. In Pokeathlon, Electrode is one of the fastest pokémon (like, he can roll fast). You've also got Pokémon like Accelgore, where it's clear that they're just able to move quickly (as shown in Pokepark 2), which is why they have such speed.

its not about attack charge its about attack response. A fast pokemon is one that can navigate and respond well to commands efficiently, HENCE electrode and Regieleki, one is litteral lightning and the other is a Sphere is an extreme ease to maneuver and orient itself as needed on a dime. meanwhile a pokemon can fly as fast as a jet plane sure, but that doesn't mean it can stop, orient itself for attack and then start moving again efficiently in a combat scenario.

My head-cannon on the "Speed" Stat, is that it's more accurate to consider it the "Mobility" or "Recovery to Attack Again" Stat. It's not actually about how fast the Pokemon's maximum distance-over-time is, but how well the Pokemon can react to things around it. - Rhyhorn has low speed because if it attacks something, say by tackling it, it takes comparatively forever, say 10~20 seconds, to get back into a position where it can do so again. - Vikavolt can move around quickly, but it's special attacks take time to charge up, and it's physical attacks rely on it opening and then shutting it's pincer's. - Escavalier is in a similar position to Rhyhorn, requiring time to remove it's arm-lances from whatever they get lodged into, and, with a pair of long sticks stuck to itself, it's kind of hard to maneuverer around obstacles, such as enemies (or trees), to get into a position to properly attack your foes. - Varoom has the issues of motor vehicles do, they're great for causing destruction via speed-based impacts, but they need a minute to reposition themselves so that they have a chance to hit you a second time. - Veluza, same issue as with Varoom. Great vertical acceleration, poor turning capabilities. - Wiglett & Dugtrio may live half-underground, but they are able to move around anywhere, change direction on a dime, and could theoretically, in a game with a completely unrelated set of combat mechanics, attack near constantly in combat. This does seem to fit with your explanation, KelKav, it's just more detailed and gives more detailed descriptions.

An explanation that I came up with to explain the oddity of speed compared to dex entry is that it isn't straight speed but instead agility. Rhyhorn can move pretty fast in a straight line, but it can't turn quickly. Glarian Zapdos can run very fast but as seen in the chase with it it doesn't take turns easily and it must slow down to turn. Dedenne on the other hand can easily turn without losing speed.

The Speed stat isn't movement speed, it's attack/action speed and possibly maneuverability. This is reflected in the German translation, in which the Speed stat is called Initiative. High movement speed doesn't help much in combat if you can't quickly start, stop, or change direction.

Wow. Initiative. That reminds of Dungeons and Dragons. Characters get the stat called dexterity. Then at the beginning of each battle, players figure out initiative. That is the order characters go in while taking turns. Each character rolls a twenty sided dice and adds their dexterity. Then the turn order goes from the highest number to lowest number. It is like speed in Pokemon except more elaborate. Dexterity is used for a lot of stuff in Dungeons and Dragons, as do the other stats. However boosting initiative stands out as the most prominent use. It can benefit all players regardless of class. Some classes do have high dexterity though, such as rogue and ranger.

Congrats on 2M, Mikey! My thoughts on Onix are that RBY wanted to stay true to the iconic Pokémon that the gym leaders were associated with (mostly) and couldn't think of a better way to let Brock have his Onix in the first gym than to make it that weak. I'm not excusing their poor decision-making, but it was a thought I had for a possible explanation.

Ninjask having half the defense of Nincada makes a lot of sense when you consider that it's shedding it's outer... skin? exoskeleton? I don't know what the right word is. And then that shed reanimates into Shedinja. it lost its armor to evolve, leaving it in two parts, the squishy inner bug and the hard outer shell of armor.

HP would be the amount of damage a pokémon can take (Wailord and whale blubber or Hariyama and body fat. Easy to cut or bruise, but you've got *a lot* to try and cut through before you do any meaningful damage (infections not included)) Defense would be how much damage the pokémon takes from an attack (Rock and Steel)

I think that the Pokemon Speed Stat is actually referring to it’s reaction time rather than how fast it can move from point A to point B. Because Speed doesn’t effect if you can avoid - *outrun* - an attack, that’s dependent on Evasion. But speed DOES affect turn order, and in PLA, having a higher speed stat also effects how easily you can get off multiple turns in a row. To compare it to TTRPGs, that’s not movement speed, that’s initiative.

I subscribe to the idea that despite Corviknight’s entry mentioning it has predators, and Tinkaton’s talking about it attacking Corviknight, Tinkaton is NOT a predator of Corviknight. Tink’s Scarlet entry describes it as having a “daring disposition,” which would imply it has a habit of doing things that are disadvantageous for it, such as pestering a stronger Pokemon, Corviknight, for no good reason.

The Speed stat doesn't represent or map to movement speed, it's _attack_ speed. It's your quick draw in the cowboy duel, not how fast your horse runs. Higher speed just means that when you and your enemy are both making attacks with the same amount of setup/telegraphing at the same time, yours connects first.

To the Speed-Stat. I never thought of it meaning the "literal" speed they could reach. In my native language, the speed stat is called "initiative" which fits more in the sense of not meaning the literal travel speed but instead the ability to attack first.

Huntail and Gorebyss seem to have high defense stats due to living deep underwater, where their skin and bones can withstand the extreme pressure. Also, Nincada's and Ninjask's weird defense stats seem to be references to the life cycle of the cicada in real life. Cicada's spend like 90% of their lives as nymphs that live underground and have harder exoskeletons to protect them from predators. As adults, they only live for a few weeks (compared to years as nymphs). Ninjask's frailness seems to reference how brief an adult cicada's lifespan is, while Nincada's endurance does so for the relatively long time spent as a nymph. And then Shedinja is the leftover shell that looks alive but isn't, hence the Ghost typing and 1 HP.

For the record, Tinkaton's hammer is made from Pawniard/Bisharp, NOT Corviknight. It's a "common knowledge" thing even Tinkaton's own dex entry (if people actually read it) states it's a DARING (risky) move for it to toss stones at Corviknight. Nevermind that on-top of having poorer stats than the bird's defenses, Tinkaton also does not learn any super effective moves against it!

I've always thought of speed in Pokémon to be closer to overall dexterity and reaction time, which would be more helpful in a battle than just running real fast. Some of these Pokémon have absolutely insane top speeds, but they can't necessarily achieve those feats of speed within what would be the equivalent time of a single turn in a Pokémon battle.

For Celesteela's low speed compared to how it's described in its Dex entry, I think of it like this: if a rocket ship gained sentience, it wouldn't be able to move in any direction required for battling very quickly except straight up (in which case it is, you know, a rocket ship)(and before anyone says "well what about when it uses Fly?" a rocket doesn't take off instantaneously once ignition starts)) As a matter of fact, that second bit probably also applies to other Pokemon with low speed stats compared to their Dex entries (ae: Galarian Zapdos being able to run 180 mph but has a base speed of 100. Accelerating to that speed in a battle scenario (for anything that isn't a space virus) would be very hard for something of that size. This is why I like to think of Pokemon's speed stats as Dexterity stats (as in Dungeons & Dragons Dexterity)

The speed stuff makes some sense to me. Rather than looking at it in terms of how fast they can run or fly, it may be more about reaction time. They can move faster than they can react or they can react faster than they can move. My family plays a table top RPG called Champions (it's a superhero game). In Champions, the speed of a character is multiplied out of combat making it so your character can fly at hundreds of miles per hour, but fights at a little over normal human speeds. That's how I see pokemon speeds; combat speed and out of combat speed.

I've always thought of Pokemon's speed stat its speed at a bursting action, rather than its sprint or running speed. This is what is needed at a battle scenario and their ability of running fast isn't as helpful in a head to head battle, not even in evasion which relies on reaction time more than just physical speed alone. Running speed is only helpful to animals in a hunter and prey dynamic, in combat that is less the case. So although pokemon are said to run or travel in fast speeds, their wind up time to execute those speeds might take longer which effects their speed stat in battle.
@arctistarfox
@arctistarfox Жыл бұрын
I have a theory about the speed stat; I think the speed stat relates to how fast a Pokémon can react to orders and enact that action rather than how fast they move. The speed stat determines which Pokémon moves first, thus I think it has to do with reaction time than physical speed.
