To me the most important aspect to enjoying Warhammer is to play with a good group of people who are good sports about all aspects of the game. If you play with cool people, you will always have fun; if you play with jerks who are only concerned about their win or engage in toxic behavior, you will always have a bad time.

My suggestion is to make absolutely sure you even have a 40K scene to engage with before getting too deep, if that's important to you. I first got into 40K and ass-deep into lore and painting and such during lockdown with the intention of collecting and playing proper games once places opened back up. Living in the middle of nowhere, I only have one viable option of game store over an hour away, but I knew the people played 40K. Once I got there, I discovered my local scene to be far less inviting than expected. When I wasn't ignored outright, conversations were minimal and brief, and asking any kind of beginner questions just got me shuffled off to someone else for a begrudging half-answer. I went back a few times just to watch and it seemed no one was actually having any fun at all - just apathetically rolling dice with a sigh, mumbling out stratagems for their unpainted models, and bemoaning the latest FAQ. I didn't go in expecting Dice Check or Play On camaraderie or whatever, but this was entirely joyless and depressing. So now I'm stuck out here in my Nowheresville cow pasture with a year of fan-brain built up and no one to actually play it with. I've been trying to shift my perspective around to focusing on the arts & crafts aspect more instead of the gameplay, but I can't deny I felt rather foolish.

1. If you want to start a new army. You don't need to buy the whole army. Divide the boxes between 12 months. You will need time to assemble and paint anyways. And the rules will change as you are building so it gives you the ability to change up some of your purchases as you go if need be. 2. A self induced monthly allowance for purchases. If you want bigger things then buy less that month and pool the leftover with the next month. 3. Kill Team to test the hobby part of 40k. Even if the game rules are now different from 40k, it gives you a taste of assembling, converting and painting models without being overwhelming. And gives you a sample of the difficulties in storing and transporting them as well. Just be careful, it's very easy to go down the rabbit hole of 20+ teams and be unable to afford 40k or worse, invest heavily in both, without planning too.
@corbingovers7559

@@corbingovers7559 Unfortunately, 500 pt games tell you very little how an army plays since your list and your opponent's are so skewed. Although if you can afford to shell out that much money at once, a full army on the aftermarket usually provides the biggest discounts (especially if that faction had just been nerfed), then you can just supplement it with a few more boxes over time.

Fully agree. Rules come and go, the looks and lore stay. Yeah i am totally new into hobby with just little over month since i purchased first box (command edition). Later i also purchased around 2000 pts worth of figures (yeah im that guy😂) and i do already have a few tips for new guys like me.. 1. Don't buy only at gamesworkshop, it's always best to google kit you want and at least here in UK there are a few shops with nice discounts like Zatu games for example where you can buy stuff with even 30% discount. 2. it's worth to visit warhammer shops as the staff is nice and friendly (at least in cambridge) and they will teach you how to play! 3. If you buy 2nd hand stuff on ebay or facebook, have a closer look on the quality! I assume some guys dont use sprue cutters and some figures came really chipped or with missing parts. 4. Chose your army carefully as Auspex said in previous videos, get something not just because its "the best" as things change anyway, but something that you will also enjoy painting or reading about. 5. Watch some good painting tutorials 6. Join your local club ( i unfortunatly dont have any here in Ely, cambridgeshire, but maybe we will start one!) 7. and last, Watch Auspex tactics! And don't watch "Discourse miniatures" channel because her every video is just complaining and you don't want that toxicity in your 40k journey 😎

I would recommend setting an achievable target for yourself, and find a friend to take the journey with you. for example, give yourself a target of attending a doubles tournament in a year's time with a friend. 1000 points is a far less daunting than 2000 and you'll have someone to play games with along the way. Otherwise, don't stress about the quality of paint jobs ( no on e really cares) , or buying specific terrain. I played on a sheet of plywood, with polystyrene or card inserts from electronics as buildings, Tin cans as storage tanks (sharp edges filed down of course), Mushroom punnets as bunkers and seed casings from trees as alien flora. I played on this board for years, and still use some of the terrain 15 odd years later, even having a fair few bits of official terrain.

Starting in the middle of 8e, I was told 'pick the models you want'. I chose CSM, built up a collection, and have had a miserable time with the faction. 40k as a whole, love it, hobby is great, I've played other factions on TTS and had a blast. It's okay to be a hobby first player and pick what you want, but I think that it's important for people who want to care about the game, pick a faction that isn't a huge trap. To some extent, you can't really trust GW to balance the game, and you have to play with what exists. If an army just got its codex, and is already showing severe weaknesses, it's not safe to assume that GW will fix the problem. I forsee the 9e Orks book to go the same way the 8e CSM book did, as an example. It's hard to really get a bead on the meta before you start playing, but some of the balance problems are so bad, and last so long, that some army choices could easily lock a gameplay focused player out of the game, especially if it's their first army. Building up to 2k with your first faction is one thing, but realizing that you don't like the playstyle, and seeing the pricetag of re-rolling to another army, is one of the worst feelings I've had in gaming, ever. Armies that have core edition fundimentals down, with a current edition codex, that don't lean too heavily into supplement books, seem to be really solid bets. It can be up to 5 years before a real stinker of a codex gets updated in a meaningful way, and that sucks. If you are a gameplay first new player, make sure the units you want to use are actually good, for the next handful of years.
@punkhippe
@punkhippe 2 жыл бұрын
This is insightful and fair but the reason I tell people to pick up cool shit is we have no idea what's gonna be good by the time you have a full 2000 points painted. Things swing to fast. Who knows what's gonna be good for the next few years. I play orks and ork Boyz are bad now. The boy, the most bedrock army unit is bad now. Yes think about the general style of play you think you want to play before you start too. But idk how you recommend strong units. Luke if you started orks in 9th I'd tell you to buy squig buggies and they are terrible now. If you slowly collect what you like your guaranteed to have stuff you think is cool. Idk it's a problem for new people for sure though.

I have to say...if you want to play knights...please magnetize. Right now with how the kits are sold (with all options in box) it just makes sense because you're going to need ONE dominus class in an army, 2-3 questorus patterns, and fill the rest with armigers. Which arms will you'll be using will change overtime and you really don't want to have to spend 170 more bucks because you put a battle cannon instead of a thermal cannon. Just arms really need magnetization (hull guns are pressure fit, same largely with carapace weapons). But seriously it'll save you lots of money.

My main tips: Buy and paint one box at a time. Improve your painting skills by watching channels like Marcos or Squidmar. Play with a small army before expanding. Start out with a kill team or 500 point patrol. If you don't like the army, resell your well painted army for a profit. Err on the side of style over meta. Meta changes but rule of cool doesn't. If you love your miniatures, you'll want to play with them more even if you lose. Nothing is worse than buying, building and painting a bunch of overpowered units only for them to become nerfed and worthless.

Here's a tip that works for me: if you don't already, start listening to podcasts. Find one you really like. But ONLY listen to it while painting. You'll quickly find time to paint, when it's as much in service of listening to the podcast as it is with painting. Funnily enough, I've never had much luck with listening to 40K battle reports this way. There's a lot of what goes on with a game of 40K that cannot be conveyed unless you're looking at the footage as well as listening, and paying a great deal of attention. Meaning whenever I try, I end up losing track of what's going on in the game. The game just becomes a lot of white noise. A podcast, by contrast, is much easier to follow even if you're also doing some repetitive task, like driving, exercise, or painting minis.

The problem is self-induced: GW's main selling point to investors is that profit margin. The problem being that profit margin is also the reason people are being pushed out of the hobby, which requires prices to go up to make up for the short fall in sales, which drives further people out, and the spiral continues. It's also why they're so pushy about selling starter sets, trying to turn young Timmy into a plastic crack addict so mum and dad's wallets are tapped instead. The real problem for GW is that the middle class is slowly dying, with wage suppression having been a thing since the 70s, which is why they're currently trying to branch out as far as possible into areas they haven't normally been seen in: Sticker albums, and collectors toys, etc... They know the real value is in the IP, and if they want to survive as a company, they'll need to push into mainstream media and become the British equivalent of Star Wars in scope and within popular culture.

My first set of proper 40K minis were some older Dark Angels models from, like, 4th or 5th edition. But you can honestly get even cheaper by going with 2nd or 3rd edition. They're not amazing in detail or posability, and you'll be limited to Firstborn, but you can't beat the prices. Probably the army with the most third party proxy potential is Imperial Guard. As while many armies have alternatives in resin, Guard-alikes can often be found as plastic kits for far less per model. Places like Anvil Industry and Victoria Miniatures are good for getting specific bits or getting custom squads, but they're not much better than GW if you're buying in bulk. Not like plastic models on a sprue. My go-to suggestion for Guard is, of course, _Wargames Atlantic._ They have a whole range of kits specifically built to sub for Guard, including a number of defunct Regiments. But they've also got plenty of Historical minis, ancient and modern, that can be retrofitted into Guardsmen with the right parts (or used as-is, if they already have guns). WA happen to also sell an upgrade sprue of laser rifles and other bits, for precisely this purpose. However, any Historical minis company can serve this same purpose. Warlord Games, Mantic Games, Perry Miniatures, etc. This also applies to proxying for Age of Sigmar, as any pre-modern culture's armed forces could could as Cities of Sigmar. Men with spears or swords or bows work just as well, regardless of geography or era. Back to 40K, the Guard can be pulled from many planets, with their own local culture. It makes way more sense for some to look like Romans, Celts, or Three Kingdoms Chinese than it does for all Guardsmen to look like Cadians. Plus, when you arrive at the gaming table, most folks who aren't poisoned by GW fanaticism will appreciate that your guys look significantly different. If for no other reason than variety and creativity. You get to come up with really divergent backstories for your army, too.

Business have to follow business rules to stay successful. Prices rising? Is it GW being greedy or the inflation that is currently going on affecting how they operate as well as anything that may have slowed them down due to what some people called a pandemic. Rising price of fuel affects shipping costs. People not returning to work, or everyone thinking unskilled labor needs to be paid like they have a skill. All these things affect how they operate. If you have a good group of People learning how to play for the first time I found it helpful to simplify the game a bit by excluding secondaries and just counting primary objective scoring at the start of command phase, along with setting up a simple map, it gives you a good sense of how the game is played before adding some more complex things (actions, scoring secondaries). Then later when you group is ready you could move onto playing more full games.

if you're serious about the hobby the best advice i can give is get a 3d printer. me and a friend saved up some money to split the cost of a really good couple of them and now all we spend money on is cheap plastic/resin for in the printers and any files that are for sale. rules are online so no need to buy any books. cant use those models and pirated rules at official gw places like the gw stores, but ive not had any problems using them at 3rd party retailers and hobby stores with room for tabletop games. and my friend and used the money we didnt spend on gw to make amazing mdf terrain, we both took lessons with computer drawing programs to design it and have it cut out for us. yes we did for real save enough money to start a small local business selling our own designed mdf wargaming terrain and 3d printed minis. and thats honestly just from money we would have otherwise spend on gw xD

BEFORE YOU READ: Just read if you have a bit of time on your hand, its quite a long comment and a little bit of topic... buuuut this community seems so helpfuls and Im interessted in your thoughts (sorry for typos) Hey guys Im somewhat new to the game and just completed my first 500 pts of necrons. I dont rly know ppl in my town who play 40k so I want to build a second 500 pts army so I can play with friends. But I cant decide on my second army, for contention are: Druhkari, Thousand sons and Black Templars. I explain further and am greatful for any input. While painting Necrons I noticed that i rly enjoy to put a lot of work in to a few Models instead of painting 10 necron warriors with lower standards. I also enjoyed edge highlighting and details like the glow effects and stuff. A low modelcount sounds appealing to me for ingame (loved a battlereport i watched where a few custodes tanked everything, absolutly badasses). and to creat my own story of my minis about an uprising archon or a black templar how climbs the ranks or gets chosen to be the Emperor Champion. My pro and cons this far: Druhkari: I love vampire and pirats, so thats a huge plus. I dont rly like Vehicles in warhammer 40k (sorry guard =( ) but the open deck pirat ships of the druhkari are certainly an exception. ( A bit of a Minus is that I dont rly enjoy torture scenes in Movies (like GOT or similare). I rly like the potential combination possibilitys with Harlequins and Ynnari and that there are pretty much 3 armys in one with the druhkari. Gameplaywise: Hitting rly hard with a few badass HQs sounds great and I like a bit of tactic as well but Im not sure if its fun to play a 500 pts game with rly new players vs Necrons or of a more straight forward army would be better (more fun) in such games. I would paint them with bretty much just Edge highlights black armor and a few details so that sounds neat but they can be easily in the 50+ models for a 2000 pts army, so not realy elite. Black Templar: Gothic knights in Black armor sounds great I rly want to turn my BTs into Rose Knights (for some reason I like the contrast with rly dark and grim Knights with rose and pink shoulderpads). They are more elite and I love that you can give every squad a theme and a bit of character by giving them relics. I love the Honor and a bit fanatic theme and the resulting fighting style of charing heads first into battle. I love there uniq units especially the sword brothers. Edge highlight and low modelcount sounds great. There biggest downside is that they are part of codex space marine. I dont rly care to much for the standard and codex complient spacemarines so I dont rly want the Codex, but i know i Needed if I want to play the army (and it drops so often so I would have to buy one every year). And I rly dont like the spacemarine Tanks and other vehicles (except dreadnoughts) I am afraid that I cant rly play my army when a new codex Spacemarine drops and the meta shifts. Thousand Sons: I dont rly care for Chaos toooo much but like tzeenche and to lead a troop of elite sorcerers in Power armor that are somewhat mutatet with a bird theme is realy appealing. To have daemonic rly big models like the deamon prince and magnus sounds great. gameplaywise i never played ith a lot of magic but I think I could enjoy that you can unleash devestating power against your opponent (and with a smale chance against yourself ;) ) . The biggest downside is that im dont rly know If i enjoy painting them because you dont edge highlight a lot, but the hole model is detail (but they are by far the most elite army out of this 3 so thats a plus) and I will enjoy painting magnus 100%. But other then that they can be very similare looking with not a hugh specific model range to back them up (normal chaos models like Hellbrutes and stuff is okay but not realy my jam). A counter argument is that they are pretty similar to necrons in a way that the troops are somewhat mindless automata and are lead by intelegent and powerful masters. and even the aegiptic theme is pretty similare. So I would try to make them a bit less aegiptic with diffrent color schemes. I am a bit less scared for the to be vehicle realiant because a lot of magic and landraiders are pretty good for them right now and I still see a lot of list without any. sooo uiuiui soory that was a lot of text I appreciate if you made it this far and am interessted in your thoughts.

Hey, i still think black templars might be the best option. If you just want to play with a friend, you don't have to know all the rules. Try to find a leaked sm codex and black templars supplement and write down important rules, stratagems, WL traits etc. Drukhari are propably too strong in small size games and if you try to paint perfectly, thousand sons can be a real pain. (I own 2000 points of nearly just rubrics and terminators) I also think black templars vs necrons would be a cool matchup. Hope it helps

A perfectly timed video for me! I've been very keen to get into the game, painting up models and meeting people to play against IRL.TTS has been a wonderful tool for getting to experience armies, it led to me discovering a faction called: Black Templars, who are religious zealot Space Marines who prefer to smack their enemies rather than shooting them! In particular I love the way a Black Templars Primaris Chaplain on Bike looks and plays, the guy zooms around the table singing brutal hymns and whacking things with a glorified religious stick XD I want to start with him and maybe the Black Templars Combat Patrol Box, though I'd love to get the Sword Brethren Squad too, they may be a bit squishy from the 3-4 games ive played them, but they just feel really cool, like Assault Intercessors on steroids!

I think the point about getting things looking good on the table is important. I'm painting 5 armies, my fiancee's chaos daemons, marines and knights, and then my tyranids and necrons. All the chaos gets the most work and is absolutely beautiful. But I don't have time to paint my tyranids and necrons with as much effort. For my tyranids, I made a simple scheme that uses a lot of dry brushing. My Swarmlord maybe took two hours compared to some of the Chaos Marine HQs taking at least 5. But you know what? In-game both armies look about as good!

I am relatively new to Warhammer. For me the biggest issue is absence of guides. All that i can find about painting is just videos about how skilful painter paint that model i search... that's nice, but i m no artist, i cant repeat it. And playing guides all like "you throw a dice, you move, he moves, then you fight" that's all folks. No stratagems, no artifacts, no army composition...other variant is a brief faction exploration, which leaves you in darkness about other aspects. I come to WH because i love it s LORE, especially Imperium. But wast rules that i can explore only buy myself is pretty daunting perspective. That puts new players in auto-loose stance as you just don't now what your opponent could take out from a sleeve. I can avoid big prices with different markets, i can ignore that my faction is not best, but i can't avoid being in darkness...and that actually makes me afraid actual playing.

I really wish I could support the channel and buy from Element Games here in the States! I still haven't managed to find an equivalent retailer for the US... I do need to say that I would advise against magnetizing for new players for CERTAIN kinds of units. In short, if a new hobbyist feels comfortable with the tools then magnetizing big units like Knights and tanks is a great idea, but smaller units might not be as rewarding. My first army was T'au, and while I was mechanically skilled enough to drill and place magnets, the result was a bunch of uninspiring, bare Crisis Suits with a discouragingly large number of fiddly bits that kept rotating around and looking silly. My magnetization time was much better spent on the Riptides and larger models I picked up, where they fit flush and looked great, and didn't move around... but by the time I figured that out, I was already in a hobby burnout from all the work the Crisis Suits took. I discovered that letting the perfect be the enemy of the good not only hurts painting, but also other parts of the modeling hobby. If I could do it again, I'd have built the Crisis Suits and Commander statically, and let the ebb and flow of the Codexes tell their tale. :)

Landraiders, repulsors, storm ravens and the like that have schizophrenic purposes (carrying guys and heavy weapons) and usually a waste of money and points and will just eat every high strength shot on your opponents turn and do fuck all or not much. Bear in mind Rule of Three and generally it’s not a good idea to collect more than two of any given kit for non horde armies. Assault intecessors are pretty cool, but Blood Angels used to have assault marines as troops and now they aren’t. Scouts used to be troops until GeeDub saw everybody having minimum sized squads as troops. “Inexplicably” they’re now in the highly contested elites slot. The future of Firstborn is always going to be in question so limit your firstborn kits. You don’t want to be like the Deathwing or Ravenwing collectors/players who got fucked over until recently. It’s generally best to have your own guys so if say GeeDub decides to push random chaos warbands instead of the Chaos Legions you want (and generally what most chaos players want) you can make a fight of things.

I would also add that there are many ways to play Warhammer 40k, while some enjoy small scale combat patrol games, others may enjoy 10k+ point apocalypse scale games. Likewise, you can play standard matched play which is typically the basis of tournament play, or if you care more about the story of the universe like myself, you can play a more narrative based game, even chaining multiple together into a crusade where your units gain or lose traits based upon what happened to them in the prior game. You also don't have to play a canon army either, you can make your own custom Space Marine Chapter, Chaos Warband, Ork Waagh!, etc. There are a lot of options in 40k.

Find what makes you enjoy the hobby and focus on it. Dont try to do everything if you dont enjoy it. Personally I love kit-bashing so thats my focus right now, I still play the game from time to time but with gw being what it is, I'd not be continuing if it wasnt for the kit-bashing and lore.

My biggest piece of advice is to not buy models faster than you can paint them. I didn't do that and I ended up with a stupid number of models that have been sitting in boxes for ages. I have so many that the thought of painting and basing all of them is intimidating. There are hundreds of them. At one point, I bought two of the big army boxes for Warhammer Fantasy. it was so daunting that I never actually did anything with any of it. It's still in boxes 15+ years later.

Me - want to start an army Also me - buys whole bunch of GSC models Also me me - learns that around 50 models is less than 1000 points and GSC is of the most expensive factions... Feels bad man.

Buying in small increments will be more expensive, though: with the way gw like to raise prices, everything you get later will cost you more than if you got it at your start. But getting overwhelmed by the mountain in front of you and never using the stuff is not really as bad, either: with the way gw raises the prices, you will get back your entire investment when you sell for "80% gw price" a couple years later.

If it's more than the necromunda set, then I don't see it catching on here in Aus, the necromunda set hasn't sold all that well here and the $470 price point is a big part of it at that point you're talking most of a weeks wages on a box of plastic, and you'd need some pretty serious disposable income to make that viable.

my tip to get your armies painted; get a scheme in mind which is not too complicated, usually with contrast for the main colour to make it easier and faster. after that u can always add details etc. but if u try to aim too high and get stuck painting 1 model per week the motivation will drain fast.

At the time of this comment I am only 2 minutes into the video. Honestly for over a decade now I have always cautioned prospective players about the costs. Sorry that's number one for me. Not sure if it will come up in the rest of the video but it was getting too high a long time ago and now it is quite ridiculous. The only reason I was in the hobby so long was because I had minies from the 80's through 2003. LOL okay so the very next 15 seconds price was talked baout.

Then you're not playing 40k are you? This is a channel about 49k why do people waffling on about a different system? Like saying I play monopoly but I am too cheap to buy the real game so I play Ludo instead... Eh?

@@Keplaves I do play 40K and I buy GW models (albeit I try to avoid buying new and never direct from GW). One Page Rules is a better ruleset and using a 3D printer allows me to field a unique looking army. This is a tips video, the first part of which acknowledges that a lot of people are dissatisfied with current 40K and use alternative systems to get a different/better 40K experience. There is also a section of the video specifically talking about 3D printers!

@@Keplaves that's like saying you're not playing basketball if you don't buy and use an NBA branded basketball. Being "cheap" is not the issue either. You know why none of my gaming friends get into 40k? Because they to a man say the models are way overpriced. $60 for three shining spears made of plastic? Absolutely hilarious. There is no value to be found there, 3 models allow you to do fuck all in the game. You can buy a complete board game or video game with multiple factions for the same price. The "tooling and machine upkeep costs a lot" is a laughable excuse. I work in an industry where we fab molds for products with forging temperatures hundreds of degrees higher than plastic; GW is making excuses for charging vulgar amounts because they want to position themselves in the market as an " ultra premium" miniatures brand. My 3D printer cost $179. I can print at .03 micron resolution. I have an ever growing array of model files most of which are at the least equal to GW art quality and in most cases higher. I can digital kitbash to create my own models. I can print a 2000 point army for $50-$75. I'm not tech savvy either when it comes to 3D modeling. GW wants me to pay $38 for a single Space Marine character. LoL get bent GW. They need to either adapt to changing technology like the music industry did or watch their market leave them behind.

@@Keplaves Who cares if they are not playing 40K. If you watched the video Auspex does mention One Page Rules specifically. A channel called Wyloch's Armory uses 40K models with that gaming system and it looks like a lot of fun. I am looking into multiple systems for using my 40K models and am glad I got the models I did before the price hike plus other LGS for getting 40K at a discount because fuck it ^_^
