It would have been better if the piece mentioned the context of the U.S. interventions that resulted in dictatorships all over Latin America, from Guatemala in 1954, Brazil in 1964, and dozens more. Chile may have been the most horrific, but it was not the only horror the U.S. engineered for our southern neighbors. This overthrowing of democracies was consistent US foreign policy. An exploration of the role of corporations in driving the installation of all these dictatorships friendly to U.S. interests, including U.S. owned copper companies in Chile’s case, is important too.
