Let's put it this way. If you speak Croatian, you can understand Serbian, Montenegrin, and Bosnian completely, 100%. If you speak Serbian, you can understand Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin completely, 100%. If you speak Bosnian, you can understand Croatian, Serbian, and Montenegrin completely, 100%. If you speak Montenegrin, you can understand Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian completely, 100%. You will be understood in Macedonia almost completely (that was my experience at least). You will be understood in Slovenia and Bulgaria probably around 50-70% (that was my experience at least). You will be understood in Slovakia enough to communicate on a basic level. (that was my experience at least). If you are from any of the countries I mentioned, please tell me your opinion.

I'm always grateful for people to share their language free on youtube, and your presentation is very sweet, but I do so wish they would understand that simply saying a long, long, long list or words with translation is not anything resembling a lesson and is practically useless for learning. What is useful is presenting a few words at a time and then memory drills--saying the word in English and giving time to remember and then saying it before giving the answer. If there is no regular testing of memory, there is no learning, simple as that.

i'm italian and i know russian almost mother tongue and there are plenty of words from other slavic languages i can undestand but usually i can't understand most things that are being said.. i've never listened to serbian specifically but when i did some time ago i was fascinated by how much i can understand without knowing the language at all, it's a bit like italian and spanish (and i've never put any effort into learning spanish) but i'm kinda used to that, it's quite interesting that it's the same thing with russian and serbian. i can say that for certain serbian words/phrases you need a bit of logic, some serbian words use (kind of) russian words that aren't often used in that context but it all makes sense, other sound almost the same or like a sort of dialect.. and some are completely different. i can certainly understand serbian way easier than ukrainian.
@teacherboko
@teacherboko Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think that's kind of interesting for Serbian native speakers as well. There are also other languages like Slovenian, Bulgarian, Czech, Slovakian, and maybe Polish that could be somewhat understood. (not counting Macedonian because it is too similar, almost the same) Or you could understand how their versions of some words came to be, which is fun.

I am having a hard time understanding how "da li" is correctly used. Can you explain this?
@teacherboko
@teacherboko 2 жыл бұрын
We start questions with 'Da li' - it seems like you can use it for any question, any tense or just with adjectives: Are you hungry? = Da li si gladan? Were you hungry? = Da li si bio gladan? Do you study? = Are you styding? = Da li učiš? Did they eat? = Da li su jeli? Will you come later? = Da li ćeš doći kasnije? Would you do that? = Da li bi to uradio? Can you do it or not? = Da li možeš to da uradiš ili ne?

What's the difference between potrebno and trebati?
@teacherboko
@teacherboko 9 ай бұрын
No difference when it's positioned before nouns: I need a car. = Treba mi auto. = Potreban mi je auto. There's a very small difference when it's before verbs: You need to arrive before 10 am. = Potrebno je da dođete pre 10 ujutru. You should arrive before 10 am. = Treba da dođete pre 10 ujutru.

Do you Serbians ever use the Cyrillic alphabet or just the latin one? and is it useful to learn the Cyrillic if most of the Serbian language is in latin??
@teacherboko
@teacherboko 7 ай бұрын
We definitely use it. Government documents must be in Cyrillic, schools use it, etc. It's definitely useful for everyday life as well. Street signs are usually in Cyrillic. Probably newspapers. As far as TV, menus in restaurants and other texts go, it's literally fifty-fifty, we don't favor one over another, so you literally never know, because we use both and we don't care. Ergo, it is useful to learn Cyrillic. When it comes to the internet, movies, social media, phones, emails, books, magazines - everything you use in a modern day society - chances are it's going to be in Latin.

Right, even though Russian and Serbian are somewhat similar, it's kind of hard to pronounce. I have no idea about Italian though. We have taken some words from them because they had control over the Yugoslavian Adriatic territories in the 20th century (today's Croatia).
