500HP, 8,000RPM from a 4L NA V8. DTM’s last ever Mercedes-AMG entry?

------------------------------------
The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) racing series is known for the quality of racing and vehicles with its level of technology arguably being second only to Formula 1. At the Goodwood Festival of Speed Andre was lucky enough to get a closer look at the 500HP, 8,000RPM 4l V8 2018 Mercedes-Benz C63 entry which won its final DTM season in the talented hands of Gary Paffett.
DTM rules specify the chassis/car and engine configuration that teams are allowed to use each season and this sees the naturally aspirated Mercedes-AMG 4L V8 run 2x 28mm restrictors which teams must workaround to get the most power from their unit as possible. A 93 mm bore and 73.6 mm stroke is used with forged aluminium Mahle pistons and steel rods. The power plant produces around 500HP with around 500Nm of torque to match. There are all the other usual bits you’d expect at this level such as a dry-sump system, mechanical fuel pump and a Hewlands 6-speed transmission which helps put power to the ground via a mechanical LSD with standardised gear ratios, ZF clutch and AP Racing brake package.
The electrical side of the car is handled by a range of Bosch products with their MS5.1 ECU controlling the engine and gearbox shifting, DDU driver display keeping the driver informed and giving warnings while required along with the all-important data logging duties and a PBX190 PDM replacing all fuses and relays. The bulk of the harness is controlled and supplied, but from the bulkhead forward manufactures must create their own to suit their engine configuration which is mounted as far back as required to give as close to a 50:50 weight distribution as possible.
The monocoque chassis is similar to that used in F1 and has carbon fibre body panels to match the rough shape of the C63, but that is where any kind of similarities to the road-going version end. Independent suspension is fitted front and rear and running no driver aids means mistakes are not forgiven lightly in this spec of car, however, the DRS equipped aero package and incredible downforce it produces no doubt help keep things shiny side up and under control at speed.
The steering wheel is bespoke and has controls for the paddle-shifted gearbox, line locker, engine map options, brake bias and of course the DRS activation button amongst others. Some aspects of the aero package, specifically the rear wing, are not cockpit adjustable however can quickly be changed during a pit stop to suit the driver's preference.
With Mercedes-AMG leaving DTM to focus on Formula E in the 2019 season this could possibly be their last ever DTM entry and victory after 30 odd years of competition and the potential of a complete DTM/Super GT merger on the cards for the future in order to make the series more attractive to manufacturers who often have their attention and costs split across a wide range of motorsport endeavours.

I miss DTM from 1990-1997 ... where cars were made in fabrics, welded, with interior, then stripped of everything, tuned, and ready to go. It was exciting to see how street legal cars were tuned and racing over the ring. Adam bough Mercedes, Paul had BMW both were watching tv how their own cars were racing. This day DTM cars are made by molds. Mercedes C63 AMG has nothing to do with Mercedes C63 AMG DTM its sad...

What a great look at the inner workings of a DTM racer! It's quite a driver oriented series when you consider the lack of driver aids coupled with the high levels of aero downforce at play. I had no idea they were running a spec transaxle and wiring harness. Funny to hear these are "cost cutting" measures in vehicles comprised of full carbon tubs and exotic bellcrank suspension setups.
@hpa101

Yes the 'cost cutting' is all relative eh! Hate to imagine what the budget would need to be without such measures 😅- Taz.

It would've been a great spec but we have to remember that DTM and Super GT have the backing of huge manufacturers with a massive budget , V8 supercars team don't and as we speak even the current V8s formula is too expensive for the teams now imagine if we had DTM spec cars. Maybe some day when there's over 100 million people here and the country is hugely developed we'll be able to challenge these manufacturers but for now we're far away from it.

I do wonder about ABS. It basically lurches you forward before you even lock a wheel, so it leaves traction margins on the table that a good driver can use. If the inside wheel locks a bit here and there, big deal.
@gordowg1wg145
@gordowg1wg145 4 жыл бұрын
It can be, as the resulting flat spots reduce both cornering and straight line braking - that is why cars in a race series where ABS is banned will usually have a 'lock up' warning light - Aussie Supercars, for example. I would agree, though, that in principle it is better to hold it at the point where there is slight slippage and maximum braking, than having it cycling on-off-on-off- Many years ago, BMW (IIRC) had a unique mechanical proportioning setup which limited braking to the inner calipers by the use of a pendulum operating the valves - I believe it was a way of mechanically getting more brake force to the more heavily loaded tyre as electronic assistance was banned.

I loved the "old DTM" now it is simply spec car Kabuki racing. The cars are still marvels of engineering and fabrication. However, every time he says, This is to make sure there is no advantage to be gained. sucks the soul out of racing. This is why the golden age of whatever form of racing is, it is before the Nannies show up and bring their bags of fairness.

High Performance Academy I think it makes sense. While i still prefer the old insane engines, it makes much more sense for the manufacturers to develop relevant technology in their racecars, therefore the turbo engines are the way to go. And also they are much quicker, so it doesn‘t get boring in any way either :)

I love motorsport from cars, bikes and trucks and have done for 40 years. I have to say aerodynamics on modern race cars has ruined racing from a spectator point of view. Cars should look like the car you can buy, No aero , a clutch and gear stick. Best driver wins ..... not best car wins.

High Performance Academy their are more classes of time attack than the über premium classes you cover. Even so they all started life with a VIN # and had to be built up to what they are today. Stop acting so out of touch. GT4 Class of racing, for example, is very related to the street cars.
@devandrasimanjuntak1646
@devandrasimanjuntak1646 4 жыл бұрын
operamatt GT4s are pretty much production based street cars. But generally when someone talks about GT, they probably meant GT3/GTLM/GTE. I’m not exactly sure they’re production based. The 911 RSR (GTE class) for example, is mid-engined now, which has no road-going equivalent.
@operamatthew
@operamatthew 4 жыл бұрын
GT Specialist I agree. I was more talking about Time attack and GT4 Classes. DTM, Trans AM & NASCAR all have this issue. Styled to look like something they are not.... very deceptive.
