Turboprop horsepower, turboprop style exhaust pipes, piston power prices, piston power operating costs. Best of all worlds.

interesting they say its a stock ls3, That means Hyper pistons? Hope that is not what you are running. The Airboat world figured this out a long long time ago :) use a forged rotating assembly, also why the 2.11 ratio. pretty much no one runs that on boats. A lot of thrust testing has shown that 2.68 and 2.55 are much better in every way both static and dynamic thrust....ohhh and stock ls3 valve springs do not survive in a high RPM application. They are made to run short bursts at high RPM then back to 2k. also something the boat guys figured out a long time ago

LS engines are the closest thing to bulletproof you will get. The 4k cruise rpm is a little concerning though.

@onethousandtwonortheast8848 They are bulletproof running for years at sub 3k rpm cruise in a car or truck.

@onethousandtwonortheast8848 Not at 4000rpm for hours at a time. Lifespan would be reduced substantially I imagine. Still, I wouldn't expect a catastrophic failure from an LS.

I wish them a lot of Luck! In my short 72 years on this earth I have never seen an auto conversion that has worked! Well maybe the Ford Model A. Old rule of thumb. If you like to fly use an aircraft engine, If you like to tinker use a car engine! And watch your friends flying by as you tinker!

82 years today and I hope we are both wrong, but doubt it. 2000 hours at 4000rpm? When they all pass 1000 hours, we will have some interest. As B.J. Schramm of Helicycle often said, "I have planted more pistons in Idaho than potatoes." The fellow with the Moose Turbine fully understands.

sonex and several other smaller experimentals have been using converted VW bug engines for decades.
@chuckcawthon3370
@chuckcawthon3370 Жыл бұрын
@@laxplayer99 you’re right but the stresses on a vw aren’t even close to the stresses put upon these bigger engines. Airplane engines develop their hp at 2750 rpm typically, considerably less than the 5200 t/o rpm to 4000rpm cruise. I wish them luck but there simply are no viable automobile conversions. They all fade away into oblivion.

Auto conversions always concern me, but it will be interesting to see the LS build flight time. LS has a great reputation for reliability, but at 4000 rpm I’ll need to see more time to consider it. Wonder why only 500 hours in the fleet since he finished development in 2016? But, I’ve been watching his progress for a while so I can’t wait to see where it goes!

As a total newbie, I ask, is this rpm concerning because it’s higher than you think the engine parts can stand up to?
@ethanlegrand33
@ethanlegrand33 Жыл бұрын
@@onethousandtwonortheast8848 usually the concern with auto engines is they aren’t made to operate at high rpm’s constantly. Think about your car. You might operate at high rpm’s when you need to accelerate quickly, but when you’re cruising you’re probably at 1700-2400 rpm’s. These LS engines are typically around the same. But now we’re operating at 4000 rpm in cruise for Flying. That’s the concern for any auto conversion

@@onethousandtwonortheast8848 those engines get rebuilt after that race. So they’re getting rebuilt every 24 hours of use, maybe 30.

Automobile engines have been used in boats for decades. 4000 rpm cruise for extended periods is not unusual. That was old school. I have no doubt the LS engines are even better.
@chippyjohn1
@chippyjohn1 Жыл бұрын
Too much difference in rpm, 5200 power to 4000 cruise. That is the equivalent of a Rotax having a power rating at 7850 and cruise of 5500. Propeller efficiency is not good over wide rpm ranges. If the prop is designed for 4000 cruise, at 5200 a lot of the power consumed will be for drag rather than thrust. Would be nice to see a thrust graph on their website, but they mention nothing of propellers.
