My most memorable experience ordering in McDonald's in a foreign language happened in Paris. My father and I walked in just as rush hour was beginning. In anticipation of that, they had made a whole bunch of milkshakes and had them sitting on the counter behind the cashiers. My father wanted to order a milkshake, but he said he didn't want one that had been sitting there--he wanted a fresh one. I told the cashier that, and she kept pretending that she heard me say "fraise" instead of "fraiche." She kept telling me that they didn't have strawberry milkshakes. I was like, come on, you understood me the first time. I argued with her for a while. Finally, I prevailed, and she went to make a fresh milkshake. Unfortunately for her, she hadn't been trained on how to make a milkshake, and she got it all over her uniform.
@redwithblackstripes2 жыл бұрын
I wasn't there but it wouldn't surprise me if she really didn't understand you wanted a "Fresh" one, its a really rare thing to ask for in French macds, hence why she messed it up as they probably don't even consider it to be an option. Customer culture in France is really different from the US, people just tend to order their food and maybe ask for an extra sauce or napkin but barely ever ask for anything particular or an item to be prepared in a specific way. Its maybe more common in high end restaurants but certainly not in fast foods.

Science corner: the muscles required to correctly display reverse testicular fricatives can *only* be developed between the formative ages of 1 and 67. After 67, generally speaking, the brain no longer has the neurogenic plasticular felatiotomy required to accurately repeat the movement. This explains the old AASL adage: “Learn to communicate before you’re 68 or else you can’t sit with us”.

Did you know that the French "wesh" is actually not a french word? It is dialectal Arabic word that means "What's up", and it originates from the Maghreb region (probably from Algeria). Since a lot of Algerians (and North Africans in general) immigrate and live in France, the modern French language has had a lot of words and expressions taken from those regions' dialects.

I'm Arab I study French, and after I learned a bit of it, I realized most of the languages in the world are *very* similar They share a lot of vocabulary and use the same alphabet, there are a few exceptions of course, but a lot of them do. Except my language. bro we even write from right to left. I feel like a lot of the Arabic dialects would be considered different languages because it kind of works the same way as a lot of the languages of neighbouring countries (like Czech and Slovak) but the difference is we have some sort of a "median" to communicate which is our standard Arabic. Idk how to explain my point but Arabic is *really* different from everything else due to how old it is and it basically has not been updated in years due to religion which made these different dialects emerge because modern people simply do not talk like they used to 2000 years ago
