I have the 500mm PF... Very close in lenght and weight to my old AF-S 300 f/4... very easy to carry when hiking... love it !! For wildlife it's a superb lens. But If I had to shoot airshows, the 200-500 is more versatile. Moreover, the minimum distance at 3m of the 500mm is sometimes a bit long. It happens that birds come closer than that and I have to step back 🤣

I have heard everyone that uses both Canon and Nikon say the Canon eyes tracking is better. But I have also heard that Nikon is getting better with firmware updates. I don't think any Nikon users should get mad about this. The Z9 is a great camera and Nikon has already made improvements. If I didn't think that having just about every control backward from what I am used to on Canon, I would probably pick up a Z9. As it is I will just wait for the R5 MKII. I love the hummingbird images.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Every system has something to offer and no system is perfect. Not many people are going to go out and get all these toys, or should I say extend themselves as far on credit! 🤣 They are both amazing and each does something the other does not. Each time I go out, I have to take a moment and figure the controls for the camera in my hand.... That having to think is something I really like and something I miss about just using a DSLR. I have using my Canon R7 for the last 4 days and realize how little thinking I am doing. The camera does almost everything for me even though I shoot in manual - I was using auto ISO and I watch it. Hey.... as long as we have fun, that is all that matters!! 🙏❤🤗

Great video. I had both lenses but switched to the Z 100-400 + the Z800 PF. I had to let the 500PF go as I really couldn't justify all three of these lenses and decided to standardise on the Z glass. However, IU really do regret getting rid of the 500PF. It gave such creamy bokeh wide open.

Thank you!!! I am planning on selling the Canon R5 and a few older Nikon lenses that I dont use or are just too heavy these days like my 500 F4 so that I can buy the 800 PF when I can find it. I am really happy with both of these lenses and they both work on my D800 - win win!! But... I do want the PF 800.... did I say I want the PF 800?? I keep watching but the only one I have found is a grey model one at a huge markup. Eventually. 🙏🤗❤ One other thin - I contemplated the 100-400 but it is just not enough reach. I know I can crop, but opted for the 500 pf - just a little more like going to eleven and it fits my old cameras!!

@@JonnyPink65 Thanks for your response. I am enjoying your videos. Still trying to find my style with mine - especially as I like photographing and videoing across several genres! I don't know if you saw my video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5evi5udqtCjfdk where I said how long I had waited from my Z800 to arrive - and I was one of the very fortunate "early birds"!!! The only problem I have with the 800, well, two actually, - low light - here in the UK we suffer long periods of grey skies which limit the opportunities; and weight! I am coming up to 74 and find the Z9 with the Z800 quite a load, particularly if I also have to lug around either a tripod or monopod with my gimbal mount and I usually like to have at least one other lens in my back-pack, AND some sort of Vlogging camera - either my iPhone with a gimbal mount or my GoPro!!!! We do suffer for our enjoyment!!😅

@@SwanSycorax Brian - I did see that video and gave it a thumbs up, and left a comment. I must not have hit the comment button and it did not save. Such a beautiful area - thank you for sharing that. The 800 PF looks a little heavy for sure so I understand the gimbal. Probably still lighter than my old 500F4. I will keep watching and waiting. It will give me a chance to pay off the other toys!!! Hey, we only live right now - we have to enjoy every second while we can. The toys are a part of it- cant take them with us!! With larger lenses, I am torn. I really like the stability of my gimbal, but love the freedom of hand held, hate the extra weight, but love the stabile footage.... Until I am able to get an 800, I will use my F mount 500 PF and the 1.4 tele. or just the 500 alone. The Z9 has so much detail and is so much fun to shoot!! 🤗❤

The reach of 500 over 300 si what I would look at. All produce great images and have different specs. What I look for in a lens, and something that is important to me, is the minimum focus distance. I want to be able to shoot critters when they are close to me - for others that is not a big deal. And aperture - in low light early mornings, I would rather have an F4 with reach. HOWEVER.... if I am walking a long way, the F4 really does get heavy and after about 4 or more hours, I cant wait to put it down. That is where the smaller PF lens comes into play. And, it works so well with the 1.4 extender for that extra reach. It will not have the super bokeh that you get with the F4 though but even that is a matter of preference. There is no perfect set up, body or lens combo. All have advantages and disadvantages. When I travel, and if I know I am going to be near to my car, I take a large variety - bodies and lenses. If I am just going to the beach or local but still have a LOT of hiking, I take less and usually one body and a second lens just in case. Only you can determine which set up will be closest to what you want. I spend money stupidly like I have it LOL. If you are in the states, you can rent from the company I use - expensive but you get to try different setup and see what works better for you. If not, hit your local camera store and see if they rent. It is a great option. ALL produce great images - the magic or personality in a photo comes from the passion of the person behind the camera. Right now, I am working on a video shot with entry level gear and just went out having an AMAZING time doing it. 🙏💖🤗 PS - my two favorites of the lenses above - the 500 PF and even the 200-500 if you are shooting the F mount glass. I did not get to shoot the one that has the built in tele when I had my Z9.

Amazing shots John and great comparison video. They’re so close aren’t they. 💥Great video. Doesn’t a 1.4 on that 500 make it a slow lens with the reduction in F stop and doesn’t it slow down autofocus too.?
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
It does reduce the light by one stop but with the increased focal distance you will not notice any drop in bocce. With the new developing tools we have at our finger tips and the better performance at high ISO on the new cameras, again not an issue. Even on my D800, you could not tell. And as far as it slowing down focus.... that is old tech thinking. The newer way the cameras focus, you will NOT notice any difference in focus speed - that 0.00000000001 micro second - no, you will not notice it. 🙏💖🤗

Were you ever able to do an AF speed comparison between a DSLR (like D850) and the Z9? Steve Perry seemed to indicate it was actually better on the Z9, but not sure if that's improved even more with the firmware update?
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
I sold my D850 to get the R5 a long time ago. I did not notice that big a difference between the focus speed using my older D800 and the Z9. I also did not see that big a difference in sharpness. Steve Perry is...... well ..... Nikon. I like his videos, but I don't put a lot of stock in those sponsored by companies when they are pushing the product. - no matter what the product is even if it is Canon. We are all going to push something we like and more so if we are being sent gear. That is why I turn it down on my little channel. Both lenses are super sharp (when it catches focus) with maybe a small edge going to the 500 PF. If you get either, you will not be disappointed. 🙏💖🤗

@@JonnyPink65 Nice response - and yeah it's clear he's Nikon :) I do find his general videos to be pretty down to earth, but they will be biased, even if a little bit. It did show a slowdown on the Z6/Z7 series with the FTZ overall. As it stands I'm likely to jump from Nikon due to my previous comment about their mirrorless just not being small enough for underwater travel. I am a Canon shooter too!! I grew up shooting Nikon and switched when the R5 came out. I bought the Z9 on a whim after renting it...... it has been fun.... but it the biggest regret I have as far as camera purchases go. Both your R6 and R7 outperform the Z9 as far as eye AF and tracking. I did a video on that with examples. I will be selling my Z9 - just not consistent for me. Jared Polin did a video about the Z8 lacking AF with the release announcement since he had it for a while before it came out. I cant get the 800 Z PF to try (I don't think the Z8 will be anymore available than the Z9 was or their long lenses.) So for me, I am selling the Z9 and using that money to get the Canon 800. I rented the EF version and it was mind-blowing. I will buying the RF version though and I think that will be even better. Enjoy your R6 and R7 - the AF is better!!! Dont get caught up in the old tech hype. 🙏🤗💖 PS - I LOVE my old Nikon D800 - my favorite camera of all time with photos every bit as sharp as the Z9 and the single point focus is more consistent. It breaks my heart about Nikon but the tech we are paying for is only slightly catching up to the R5 and still not there. The R7 has better eye AF as well. Great video specs but not when the focus wanders - watch Jared's or my video.

Interesting that I'm hearing conflicting issues with AF. Most people say Nikon has mostly caught up with the competition with firmware 3.1. I'm a topside and underwater photographer and I just ordered the Z8 - so here's hoping!

I hope it goes well for you. If it is like the Z9, it will have trouble in water (rain throw's it off a bit) and snow. I have never shot underwater so I can not say, but I am selling my Z9, extra batteries, FTZ adapter and a few lenses. Going to stick with Canon!!!! Nikon is close to what Canon put out 3 years - and I was a life long Nikon guy until the R5. Look up Jared Polins video on his use with the Z8 - he has the same issues that I did and it just got to be too much for me. I dont like missing easy shots. In my use the AF shows on the eye (what we pay for) but gets the background or shoulder in focus. Great video specs but for me, the focus drift was too much for both stills and video. I hope that it works for you - many are really happy with Nikon!!! When it is on, it is amazing..... but you dont find that out until you get to your computer! I was really hoping when I bought the Z9 but I am truely heartbroken but it is not consistent enough for me. 🤗💖🙏 PS - the longer lasting battery of the Z9 will be better I think!

@@JonnyPink65 I was really hoping with the new firmware this would be sorted - but yeah, what's the point of moving to Nikon mirrorless if you get none of the advantages of a mirrorless AF system. If anything, getting false positives is worse (thinking the system will help but it's causing missed shots). I had a look at the Nauticam (underwater housing, I currenlty shoot a D500 underwater) and the Z8 + underwater housing is bigger than my current one. I'm at capactiy for travelling as is. I'm a nikon fanboy, but I can't justify a Z8 with the AF issues and with Sony being so much smaller. It's a shame as I absolutely love Nikon glass, and I've invested heavily, but I think I'm going to sell up and jump on Sony (I don't like their topside wildlife range, but it is what it is). If sony brings out the A1ii, and it has pre-release/pro-capture, it would be an absolute insta-buy for me. Come on Sony/Nikon/Canon, compete in the pre-release space!! :D
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
@@sinetwo My friend James who also shoots wildlife loves his D500. The Z72 I think it is has AMAZING dynamic range but I not sure how well the AF would work in a housing. The Z8 is about as big I think as the D850 so that may play into it for you. Sony does make some awesome cameras, but so does Canon. If the D500 and the lenses you have with the AMAZING Nikon color are working for you, keep using it - enjoy it. No need to switch unless you really have too - or want to. It is expensive to switch. For wildlife, the other downside I have found with Nikon is that NOTHING is available. Folks waited a year for their Z9s. Their 800 Z PF that has been out for a year is no where to be found here anyway. I would have bought that lens and just accepted the missed shots. Ah well. You can always rent (the rental company I use does not have the Nikon long lenses I want either). The newest and latest hype is not always the greatest. I can get the same quality images with my old D800 and I think the single point AF is better on the older cameras too - even the D850 and D500. If you really want a crop body, both Canon and Sony have some amazing ones. I switched to Canon because of the tech and the color. I tried Sony but found all their raw files devoid of color depth and looked too digital - at least to me. I can usually spot a Sony photo - usually. Good luck with what ever system you use. 🤗💖

@@JonnyPink65 Indeed! i am in love with my D500, I just want the AF tracking of a mirrorless :) One can hope that Nikosonynon all end up with feature parity to some extent. Please give me procapture, and a 300 2.8 that works well on Sony and I'm switching :D Underwater I actually find the D500 to be an absolute beast, and probably wouldn't benefit much from mirrorless (it's not like the AI AF tracking will track specific fish or macro critters). Topside however I am dreaming of the day I get amazing tracking so I can focus more on composition. Just yesterday I stumbled upon some wild rabbits, moving the AF point to recompose *LUCKILY* resulted in some good shots, but usually time is of the essence, and moving your AF point can well be the result of a missed shot (more times than not). Sony *unfortunately* is the only FF mirrorless that has great tracking in a small body - I'd love to go with Canon R5, or similar, but i'll end up in the same conundrum as the Z8 underwater housing size, at which point I might as well go with Z8 :) I'll wait and see what the A1ii looks like - hoping they do a dual release of their A1ii and the 300 2.8 Sony native e-mount lens. Both of which I'm sure, I will not be able to afford.

@@sinetwo You know, no camera does everything perfectly. If you are happy with your D500 for underwater and it is working for you, keep using it - you can not use all the amazing features under water I would think and you already have all the gear for your under water as well. If you want a specific wildlife camera, i would recommend you rent - expensive but if it does not meet your needs, you send it back - no harm, no foul. If you love it for wildlife, buy it and have two systems. The reason you see pros at events with two bodies and lenses is that each does something different (they have short and long lenses so they can get both). For me, in high ISO I would grab the R5 or Z9 - full frame. For reach, I would grab the R7. For portraits and landscapes, I would grab my old D800! I was personally not a fan of the D500 because of the small sensor size but I am in the minority. The eye tracking, if that is what you are looking for, will be best with the Sony and Canon - ANY OF THE MIRRORLESS models are better than the Z9 (in my use) and probably the Z8. Any camera can take photos and that is where the skill and experience of the shooter comes into play. There is not system that is perfect so depending on what you want..... dont fall into the hype. Some of my old F mount lenses dont play nice with the Z9. ALL my old Canon EF lenses work flawlessly with the new R mount bodies I have used..... and M mount bodies as well. Just my %0.02 What every you get - enjoy it and have fun!! 💖🤗

I could feel it lose. When I have a lens on the tripod, I keep it lose to try to keep the image level so I can move the lens anyway I want. I have not dropped that one yet - yet, but I have dropped others. I could feel it!! 🙏❤🤗
