Brian is spot on. It’s just like school. You can complete all your homework, study hard and do everything to prepare for the test. But you don’t get to take the test at home. It’s just not the same. And if Brian’s voice can’t be heard here then I don’t know who’s can.
@robertduncan84004 жыл бұрын
BTICronox once he does it in competition people will acknowledge it. Until then all the fans and competitors will laugh and mock his “record”. You don’t have to agree with me, but that’s just a fact. And when Brian walks away from competing he will be remembered as a humble legend of the sport, If Thor were to walk away right now he would be remembered as the guy who set a questionable “record” at his home gym with no WSM titles to show for it. Hmmm.. it’s a tough choice for which I’d rather be. But if his “record” is more important than his legacy than he can have it 🤣😂
@robertduncan84004 жыл бұрын
BTICronox you’re right I forgot he got the one title 2018. That’s my bad. I do stand by my legacy comment. If he does the lift in competition then I believe people will give him the respect to go with it. And that’s cool that he’s famous in Germany but don’t you guys still worship David Hasselhoff? Haha just joking with you.
@robertduncan84004 жыл бұрын
BTICronox Yea I don’t dispute the parameters as to how he did the lift. At the end of the day did Thor actually pull the weight off the floor? Yes he did. I think why I fall on the side I’m on is because I grew up my whole life competing in sports. I played hockey for 18 years and fought in MMA for 6 years. And no matter how hard I trained at home or at the gym, none of it mattered unless I showed up and performed on game day. I know weightlifting is a little different as it is a solo effort but I just believe in competition. And if Brian Shaw or Eddie Hall posted something tomorrow of them breaking some record from their home gym I would feel the same way as I do in this situation. I feel like you have to have competitors around you who have a chance to match or even beat the weight you’re going for. Someone who adds that risk vs reward factor if you miss your lift. There is just a different type of pressure in those situations that I don’t believe you can recreate at home. Either way Thor now has the record as far as the books are concerned. I just feel that if he wants the respect from the community like Eddie received then he will need to do it in a live competition as well.
@tristanperkins98284 жыл бұрын
@BTICronox I don't agree that Eddie had better conditions, I think they were both at the top of their game, personally I like Eddie hall more and thought his lift was better simply because I felt more hype, but I don't think thor's lift should be taken away from him and think it should be classed as the world record deadlift, I also think that Eddie and thor are going to try go higher in the future and am rooting for Eddie, simply cause I like him more

Totally agree with Brian and Eddie on this one. Lost all respect for Thor when he acted with such unsportsmanlike like conduct towards Eddie at WSM. It says a lot that Brian, Eddie, Z and all these other strongmen get along so well. Even Oberst and Eddie get along. Sure they have their rivalry but they love and respect each other. Thor just seems to have his own posse and doesn't really try to fit in. They are absolutely correct, had Eddie done his lift under the same circumstance, no one, his FRIENDS included, would have accepted it as the world record. Eddie is a great guy.

@BTICronox no one is questioning how much you love thor. The only question is why it was accepted. As Brian said himself. If eddie did the same thing at his gym with his friends it wouldn't be counted. Thor is a great lifter but is making a mockery making this a strongman record in his own gym. Yeh he did it. No doubt. Should it be counted in a strongman record. Definitely not. Just because thor is in tv shows, he gets a strongman record at his home??? Wtf
@bigvideoenergy4 жыл бұрын
@BTICronox using a referee that wasn't filmed, happens to be apart of his yesmen crew. Happens to live in the same place. Happens to have his dad "officially" weigh it. Everyone is waiting to break records. Why can't he just wait? Stoltman had his training footage up of his lift at 228.4kg but then doesnt get it counted? Fair enough you are a thor fangirl but atleast be non biased like the shaw fans we are.
@djveck02124 жыл бұрын
@@bigvideoenergy i agree with most of what you said, but not with the waiting to break the record part. James Todd yeah, the credibility of the competitors at the top is something the sport can use to distinguish its heritage and traditions. The sport needs growth but it also needs stability or it will inflate and then deflate after some controversy that discredits it. With multiple competitions each with competing sponsorship interests you’ll get that happening if there isn’t a strongman code. The more credibility, the more fans you attract and the higher value you can place on representation. Shaw gets this. Even Oberst gets it. Change is inevitable. Strongmen need a say in how to manage it though. It’s their pecks on the line.

@@dantethunderstone2118 It wasn't one small point he made. It was the biggest point by far. From about 8:40 onwards he clearly makes that his biggest point by far. Brian even goes as far as explaining that his world record axle deadlift at the time was way harder because the guy before him detached his bicep. The somewhat unpredictable nature of a competition rather than being able to go when you are ready is his biggest point by far. Sure it was an event and it was about deadlifting, but did you miss the part where Brian says it was basically set up for Eddie? Did you miss the part where Brian said that he wasn't at that deadlifting competition because of it? Eddie brought his own bar to do the 500kg on, how is that fair? Shouldn't everyone bring their own bar/log/stone/whatever for a record then? Beyond that they apparently gave him time. Competition of not, they created the best possible circumstances for Eddie to be able to break that record rather than it just being a competition where he has to just deal with how it goes, which, again, is very clearly Brian's biggest point as to why it should be done in a competition.

Also, a big part of being a professional athlete is the psychological element of being in a competition and the pressure of the crowd. Edit: a lot of people focusing on “kilos are kilos” etc. But that’s not the point, the point is that outside of a competition, it was not a world record. Yes the WUS is broadcasting it etc. But if usains training session had been broadcast, it still would not have counted as a world record, Furthermore, Eliud Kipchoge broke the two hour marathon time, but this doesn’t stand as a marathon world record as it was outside of competition in favourable circumstances.

Brian is 100% right about the competition factor. That plays a huge part in performance. In my view, Eddie's 500kg deadlift stands as the WR as that was done during a sanctioned event. Respect to Thor for lifting 501kg but records can't be set in your own gym / home, similar to other sports.
@rvanleersum11 ай бұрын
But you ignore the factor that makes the competition criteria important. Brian states the reason is because you don't know how much time you have on the incremental increases etc. Eddie's 500kg lift was done on a separate bar and he was given maximal time to prepare, as he deemed fit, to make his attempt. So, in all honesty, the parameters of an in competition lift weren't met in that instance either. It simply happened at a competition. I personally feel the debate is inane. Even Eddie doesn't dispute that Thor legitimately pulled 501kg. Under the circumstances, it was the best they could do. It's a bit much, to me, to discredit the legitimacy of that 501kg lift on that subjective detail. All the controls were present by Shaw's admission save the aforementioned. Thor's lift was 100% sanctioned by WUS. Again, even Eddie doesn't dispute this despite his claim that WSU wasn't there in person. It was still sanctioned. Saying Thor's isn't good by that criteria mutually discredit's Eddie's.

Mr Sensei fairness has nothing to do with competition. It’s not fair for the team who would have won the NBA finals or the Stanley Cup. It’s not fair that the people who would have competed in this years Olympics couldn’t compete. It’s called an epidemic. Sometimes things are out of our control BUT you can’t just choose to change the standard because of a freak event that has an impact on one season. It’s not fair that Caleb Dressel would have likely swept the Olympics swimming and won’t be able to. Should he just get to set records in his own pool. Should he beat more of Michael Phelps records in his own pool? Should he get medals for this? No. Should “the best” team at the time of seasons being shut down win the NBA Finals or Stanley Cup? NO. The simple answer is NO. Fairness has nothing to do with it. Anyone who argues that it isn’t “fair” has no argument. Sometimes things don’t go your way. This goes for everything in life. Get over it. If strongman is to be a legitimate sport, you need to have legitimate rules, not some bro mentality of do it how you want, when you want because you’re ready and it’s “not fair” that you were ready and the moment was taken away. It’s not fair the Arnold classic Australia was cancelled and people who need these shows for the Olympia cannot compete. It’s not fair that the buffalo bills lost 4 Super Bowls in a row. It’s not fair the saints were robbed on a missed pass interference call. It’s not fair Steve Bartman caught the ball and the Cubs slipped. It’s not fair that great players get no recognition because they lived in the era of Michael Jordan. It’s not fair you didn’t get the job you wanted over another candidate. It’s not fair you weren’t promoted over your co-worker. It’s not fair that the girl you like doesn’t like you back. You can’t always get what you want and strongman should be that way JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER SPORT.

you know I was quite convinced that these at home records were somewhat acceptable because of the nature of the weight being calibrated. but after hearing what Brian is saying, absolutely it opens up Pandora's box. The credibility comes from it being done inside a competition. same with power lifting.

I agree with Brian, records should only be broken in competition. Not in someone's home gym. I give every athlete in strongman competition so much credit for lifting the amount of weight they do. What I took out of Brian's video is that he wants it to be fair. Kudos to him. Great video Brian! :)

The main takeaway here should be that there has to be a STANDARD in any competition. When you bend the rules to accommodate extenuating circumstances you are inevitably going to bend the agreeableness on any feat achieved outside of the standard. All this does is create more complexities and controversy which is NOT needed in ANY sport. Totally agree with shaw here.
