dino dino's lower path is very slightly faster, yes, the cut in the cave is apparently possible shroomless, but insanely hard. no crystals on the walls and no red dino in the water appear in multiplayer. i'm surprised you didn't take the free shortcut in front of the bowser statue, anyway, bowser's castle has a crazy skip: it involves falling off when you begin the section outside (after ther rotating fires), but going very tight backwards, the lakitu counts the lap on respawn if done well (while respawning you there, not at the beginning); a simpler way is to get hit by a blue shell just right of the starting line, to hit the OoB above, which respawns you at the outside section. multiplayer keeps only the first pair of thwomps and no fireballs before the spiral, also, thwomps in 64 still spin you out if you were fast when crashing, i'm pretty sure. RR has no raining stars in multi, such a shame, also no pretty statues in the air. and yes, only MK8 is so stupid to let items in cannons and you stay vulnerable, especially with lakitu taking 3 business days to respawn you... was playing with a friend the other day, the minimap made him pop ahead on DK mountain, but he was nowhere to be seen... lakitu makes him appear (since MK8 doesn't show lakitu dragging others either) above me when i got to the other side, so he squished me, while i thought i had DC'd due to how long it took, so i wasn't expecting it, turns out he had just hit a banana when the shock came like 10 secs before and fell in the cannon. it would work as a cannon in MK8 btw, just drop us on the boost panel. last fun fact: the bullet blaster is the lightest vehicle (and nothing to make up for it).

The wooden bridge shortcut (inside the cave) on Dino Dino Jungle is way faster, but it's an off road, you're better off waiting 'til a potential 100cc, 150cc or mirror race if you need to save your shroom or star for it. There's actually another (hidden) shortcut on Dino Dino, the good news you don't need any item for it, bad news, it's super risky... shortly after you leave the stomping dinosaur the beginning of the track, as you enter the early bridge section there's a hidden bridge towards the right with a boost pad on it, but it's a very skinny ledge that's risky to hang on... personally, I don't think it's worth it but if you're able to hang on it saves a lot of time. If you take the regular bridge path you'll see it below you. Risk rewarded I guess. The gap shortcut on Bowser's Castle (where the Bowser statue is breathing fire) is free to do, don't need a shroom or star at all and it's still free just a sharp turn that's all. I can't decide if Wii Rainbow Road is the hardest one of the Mario Kart series or GCN Rainbow Road here... I say Wii Rainbow Road was the toughest for me because it's windy and you're doing it with motion controls as well.... but GCN Rainbow Road here on Double Dash is way up there especially with the slippery mechanics.
