I'm so happy to ditch dressing for other people. Frankly, they never cared what I wore unless it was for, say, an interview. But at 61, I don't care if someone thinks I shouldn't wear rock concert t-shirts, tops that show a bit of cleavage, camo boyfriend cargo pants or skorts. You hit the nail right on the head when you said 'wear what makes you feel good and comfortable.'

I am also 61 and I wish I could care less what others think. I am getting better at it though. My problem is I am still in good shape for my age, but when I get dressed I think about my age. LOL I am getting braver and have been wearing mini skirts and shorter body con dresses. They are short but not the real, real short skirts if you know what I mean. I just don't won't to look like I am trying to dress like a teenager and nor do I want to be a teenager, but I surely am not going to dress frumpy either.

There are so many things I buy and never wear them because I’m afraid friends will think I’m trying to look younger but the truth is I love younger looking clothes..you know I went into a bridal store looking for a formal gown they ask my age and started showing me gowns that were so old looking I couldn’t believe they have gowns by age..that cured me I now wear what I am comfortable in..hats off to you thank you.❤❤

I think we should ditch the rules about wearing not wearing white after Labor Day or before Memorial Day. Some people are still holding onto that “rule” and need to let it go. Great video, thanks for sharing 😊🌸

@@catlady6938 I am from Québec, but it was true 25-50 years ago. No white before mid-May and not after Labor's Day, it was considered out of fashion, September beeing fall. There are no rules now, most of all in Québec.

I knew almost all of these points.... In two of them I heard my late mother speaking... She took pride in always wearing matching shoes and handbags... And disliked mixing black with other dark colours. Thanks for encouraging us to wear what we love and get over too strict dated rules. One very polarizing style rule is that women over 50 should not wear shorts or anything that's above knee-length. I say, if your legs look good and if you feel good in it, wear it!

My younger sister talked me into continuing to wear my short skirts at age 63. I have the legs of a skinny 16-year old, thanks to genetics, so now I do. I never wore a skirt shorter than mid-thigh anyway, and now wear them just a bit longer, but definitely well above the knee. I love them with thigh-high boots and matching tights in winter, too. (I don’t wear shorts as much, as I find them much less comfy than skirts, but I go even shorter, if I want, in them. Mostly I wear mid-thigh to Bermuda length shorts). Being petite, I get enough extra length in most shorts and skirts anyway to be “age appropriate”, in my eyes, that is. I always wore modest clothing, my preference, not a requirement. But that doesn’t mean hiding all the good parts🙂

Another rule is after 50 you should not wear sleeveless tops/dresses. I’m 70 and I wear sleeveless tops. I have since I was a small child and will continue to do so!

I’m 63 and I wear sleeveless, too. I have bad collagen loss, so my arms are flabby and wrinkly, but why shouldn’t I be able to be as cool and comfortable as a younger woman? My Mom, who died last year, always wore 3/4-length sleeves, which I really hate, and told me I should, too. I hate the idea that our bodies have to look perfect to men, where did that come from? Mom was right about everything, except for this. She said she didn’t want to “offend” men, but I say, if they are offended, they can go jump in the nearest lake (but I think it was really just vanity). We don’t have bodies just to “please men’s eyes”, that’s nuts.🙂

I want to ditch the front tuck. Either tuck it in or leave it out. Every time I do a front or off center tuck I feel like it looks sloppy. I understand the concept but it’s not for me.

Good advice, I just tuck all tops in fully, I hate wearing “long tops to cover the tummy” as so frequently recommended for my age, 63. Why should we have to cover up when our tummies get a tiny bit rounder with age? Partially tucked tops look sloppy, I so agree. Men don’t obsess and hide their tummies like we do. Ours are never as round as they seem to us when looking down on them, anyway. It’s so frustrating that most “regular” tops sold are so darn long, it’s completely out of style, but brands just keep cranking them out anyway. I like cropped tops, I’m petite, so they usually just cover my waistband, perfect. If a sliver of skin shows, that’s ok, too.🙂

Fabric is the first consideration for me. I just don’t bother looking at any synthetic-fiber items, or brands that feature them. Searching for the fabrics (and genuine leather for footwear) always narrows a selection down to items I will love and wear. Good list of old rules to ditch, thanks Deirdre❤

I loved the 7th style rule to break. I practice this on a daily basis. If I like it, I wear it. I also adhere to the rule of not worrying if I am over dressed for my day. Love this video. The only rule (for myself) I “sort-of” follow…. Is…. If I reveal a little more at the top, (like deep v-neck or sleeveless) I will go more conservative on the bottom. And vice versa. Classier that way, I feel.

I'm 75 and it has taken me until I was 65, to dress in what I liked rather than follow the fashion rules of my late mother (and she died in 1991) such was her incredible negative influence when it came to clothes. Then there was a Mother-in-law and some so-called friends who all continued to influence the way I dressed. I gained strength as I grew older and by 65, I made choices for myself, (including divesting myself of a couple of loud negative friends), and mostly shopped for mid-range clothing that I liked and look good, but also shopped at Charity shops and big box stores, where you could always find a great bargain at minimal cost but enhanced the wardrobe and the looks I was creating for myself.

So many older ladies seem to end up with a certain palette of colours ( beige mid blue lavender sage green) which seems driven by manufacturing! They have decided for us apparently that orange or fushia is a nono! Totally agree colur is for everyone 👍🏼❤️

I have been letting my natural gray hair grow out and am still wearing the same colors I’ve always worn. I think it depends somewhat on your skin tone more than the hair. All shades of blues, pinks, probably any color you like paired with whites and cream as well as black should work for almost anyone I think. May need to add a little more color to your makeup, esp. lipstick. A good hairstyle also helps. I’d always worn a simple chin length bob cut but had my hair cut into a layered pixie/bob with bangs and have been so happy with it. Plus it made the growing out process much less “painful”.

I've never heard the one about having a super model body. Only 1% of the population have that kind of look & thankfully I've never been influenced by this. I have a chest, hips & shape. I luckily do not look like a 12 yr old boy, nor have the desire. I feel terrible for those who are insecure about that. Nor have I heard the one about being short & wearing long pieces. So weird! I'm 5'4" too, and have always disliked myself in long dresses and wide leg pants. I'm borderline short torso/long legs and balanced, and of course a bit overweight. Haha. I'm learning to appreciate the long flowy sundresses, but still don't love the wide bottoms. I love this advice. I have to force myself to wear black and brown together but i'm getting there. I have noticed that i need to wear brighter colours than i used to or i look washed out. I absolutely agree with everything you said. I am 69 and in the spring and summer I wear hot pinks and bright blues and all sorts of vivid colors. I'm wearing a bright orange top at the moment. It makes me feel cheerful and youthful. In the winter I'm in black more than anything else. I've been told that's a serious no-no at my age. Lots of blush, the right lipstick, some pretty silver jewelry and I feel beautiful. It's not about rules. It's more about the details. I'm into the total package. I think you are too. Such a great video..I agree with all the rule-ditching. These few years, as I reached 50, I began not caring about what others think, especially where fashion is concerned. I do face though a personal styling dilemma: I am overweight, with a large tummy which makes me an apple shape. I like looking well put together, I like seeing classic outfits but on others. I prefer my outfit having a bit of an "edge", a "rock" or quirky sense, but I struggle to find good, quality pieces (good fabric) at plus sizes. Should I limit the quirkiness only to my accessories? I would love to hear your suggestions. Thank you 😊

Wearing dark colors together is an easy one in cold climates. I've worn brown and black together for years. For some reason navy and black just isn't as easy for me. I do remember at some point reading that black and brown was one of Valentino's favorite color combinations - that was all the validation I needed on that one.

I agree it’s not necessary to pay a lot for most clothing items. I buy most of my work out, casual and sleepwear at stores like Costco and Landsend. I recently found a linen shirt on the Costco clearance table for $6.00! I often buy out of season too for the bargains. Right now I’m waiting for the Talbots 80% off sale in August. Last year I found my granddaughter a wonderful jacket there for less than $40.00! It was one of her birthday gifts. I am usually able to find a dress for myself there for $50.00 or under too. I get a lot of compliments on my outfits too even though I spend little.

Agree with wear colours that make u happy. I’ve been in a drab navy t shirt all day and guess what I feel drab so that’s going into the wash and will be donated. Life is too short to feel drab x

I got another one for you. Don't wear white if you're overweight. Hahaha. 😀 I remember when I was 20 and weighed 110 pounds, cringing at wearing white because I looked at myself in the mirror and did not see the skinny model girl that I thought I should be so I spent my entire youth in black. 😞 Now I'm much much older, and weigh 135, and I rock the white because it makes me feel fresh and light and airy.

Great, I love wearing white! I’m not skinny, but I wear white on the top or bottom, or both. At age 63, I’m always telling very young women to enjoy their beautiful, youthful bodies while they’re young. I know I took mine for granted, thought it was awful, and now I wish I had worn more fitted (not tight) cuts then to show my shape a little. But, at that age, we’re so self-critical from the societal conditioning to look and be perfect. I can’t tell you how many men I dated who told me they wanted a “Victoria’s Angel”, but those models have ribs removed, breast implants, and every other trick to change their bodies. There never was a second date with any of these guys, all fantasists who will never find such women.🙂

I am 60 and still love fashion. I follow my own "rules" that is dressing for my body shape, colouring and always being classy and tasteful in my choiced. Age is the very last thing I would consider as I do not want to look like mutton dressed as lamb. Great video and a reminder to be less judgmental on yourself and others as well.

I'm a real believer that white can be worn year round - the textures and fabrics will make the difference in the winter e.g. boucle, silk, tweed, wool.XX

Very good points that you brought up...I mostly wear what I feel like that day and what makes me feel pretty. But I do find it particularly hard to style with bold, bright colors at my age (60). Maybe a video inspiration for you for the future??
