Exactly my thoughts. She was so difficult to beat even at her very last stage (I am sure this one is among her 10 last career matches) and even one of (if not the) best player of the season struggled and had to work her ass off to beat her…

Henin's one handed top spin backhand was truly outstanding. Such a hard shot to execute well and she made it look easy. Hat off to Seles for her performance. Even out out of condition she could compete with anyone. Surely one of the game's most gifted players ever.

Seles had so many of these crushingly close losses after she came back from her attack. Even being obviously so much less fit than Henin here and she STILL had match points against her and stayed with her in the third set, just shows her hitting ability, no one has come close since with both hands on both sides.

Keep in mind Monica Seles was 10 years past her prime, at a stage where she was physically, mentally and emotionally nothing compared to her earlier self, and up against a much younger Henin who would finish the year as World No 1. Monica was simply incredible. She could well have gone on to become the most successful tennis player had she not been stabbed when she was just 19.

agree. this is a high-level match. She is staying with prime Henin and had match point on her. She got tired in the end. So, pre-stabbing seles could beat Henin 03 or Henin 07 no problem. Did not realize Henin was this good in 2003. She moved very good in 2003, might have been her best year.

So agree..Monica played “ok” here and even post stabbing she played the big points better than anyone ..here against Justine she held a match point and I believe served for the match more than once and just played sloppy and mentally bd physically caved just a bit ….her serve also did not look good to me especially the 2nd serve…and she not even close to her best here …..I think us Monica fans love to really comment on just how good she was being only 19 and having 8 slams and she had by 93 figured out how to bear the top five players including Graf … I don’t see any of that changing all the way through to 97-98
@derrickc1353
@derrickc1353 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that a strong case can be made for seles being the GOAT. She never saw her prime before got stabbed and her competition was better than Serena's. Seles had Graf and Navratilova. Serena had mostly her sister with capriati and clijsters. Seles had at least a few more dominant years before Williams sisters or hingis stops her. Her prime years physically would have been 1995-2000.

Or maybe Roger is the female Henin? 😊 Her backhand here reminds me of Roger’s 2017 backhand: extremely offensive. In my opinion, Henin was more consistent about attacking on her backhand than Roger. There were some years where Roger sliced way too much on his backhand.

@@KnowTrentTimoy When Seles returned to competition two years later she had fallen down a lot of places in the rankings. She made a petition so her ranking points at the moment of the stabbing could be maintained because the incident was the responsibility of the tournament organization of that WTA event. The WTA direction board declined to make a decision and organized a voting procedure so the players would decide. Only a couple of players supported Seles while the others voted against. This made her return even more difficult. She was severely traumatized not only by the incident but also by the way she was treated afterwards. She struggle with severe depression, bulimia and overweight probelms since then and she never really recover to her form despite still winning a final grand slam. Before the stabbing at 19, she had already won 8 grand slam titles!

@@bruno_dias I recall some of it now. Thank you for that. It's incredible what Seles accomplished by the age of 19 with EIGHT grand slam titles! I'm certain she would've won another 8 or 12 IF it weren't for the untimely stabbing. I also blame Germany's easy-going legal system that let the mentally deranged Steffi fan go with basically a slap on the wrist.

Seles was such an incredible ballstriker, with great consistency and superb accuracy, but at this stage of her career her fitness and movement were below par. It's amazing to think that Seles was still only 29 here. By today's standards that would be unremarkable but back then it was the twilight of a player's career. It's hard to know how Seles would have got on had she not got injured in 2003. My guess is maybe one more year on tour and eventually winding down physically and mentally.
@quiddy
@quiddy Жыл бұрын
she really was an amazing ball striker. For someone who strings her racquet at 100 lbs, much tighter than any one on the WTA or ATP ( Sampras strung his at 78 lbs and Monica strung her previous 102 sq inch yonex rq-380 at 83 lb) and in order to get any type of plush trampoline feel you’d have to hit the ball squarely dead center.
@brennenrivera4288
@brennenrivera4288 Жыл бұрын
She had actually gotten herself pretty fit in 2003. You could see it in her first tournament of the year (which she won) and in Australia before she hurt her ankle. Then her foot problems started. So I would argue her fitness wasn't her problem in 2003, she had gotten herself the most fit she had been in years and she got rid of a lot of the excess weight. But her ankles and feet were failing her and is what led to her retiring that year.

I remember very well this final, Monica had had so many occasions to win it, she should have never lost it...she seemed tired though getting into this final, not hitting the ball as usual (slower, less power, less pace, not serving strong), but she did what she could and was so close to winning. A long and fierce battle between two amazing champs, Justine managed to hand tight and finally clinched the victory, more realistic on key points. / Monica could have been the goat without her stabbing (she had won 8 GS before her 20th birthday...MAD), the Monica we had post stabbing was no longer the same player, less confident, overweight...but she gave it all in every match and was so good basically that she could still compete at a very high level and was really hard to beat. Love her forever, she's the one who made me love this sport. She was so unique and spectacular.

Amazing how flat Seles hit the ball. But it makes sense as she came up before poly strings became the norm on tour. There is something to be said about poly strings ruining the game a bit, in that the game is now mostly about maximum power and spin from the baseline. Back in the 80s and 90s, there was a penalty to hitting with so much power (balls going long) and so players had to use variety, touch and net play to gain an advantage. It's part of why players like Federer, who straddled the old and modern era, are so special in that they have both modern power and old-school variety. It's been nice to see young guys starting to work on their variety again but you can tell it's not natural to them because they didn't grow up doing it.

Lost much respect for Henin after the incident where she held up her hand to indicate she wasn't ready to receive Serena's serve, but the umpire didn't notice and called Serena's serve for a fault. Henin didn't even so much as own up to it at the time, and has said in interviews she regrets that moment...but she sure didn't regret it at the time. Very bad sportsmanship.

Justine's footwork and groundstroke mechanics -- still superior and more "modern" looking than 99% of the WTA player in 2022. How penetrating her backhand can be, and how early she can take the ball on groundstrokes and return-of-serves, still amaze. More effective a weapon than a lot of the men's single-handers.

I see what you mean as we know Seles can hit harder ( especially the forehand) but it was a great battle and the old Seles came out in tiny bits in this match but not enough to pull off a win against the hottest player in 2003

@@rainyd4293 Well, people often forget that the attack happened when she was only 20 years old and the time she had already won 8 grand slam titles. She inspired generations of players to come and those who played against her often said she was the best match player they had ever seen. I Hamburg '93 hadn't happened, she probably would have won 20 slams or more.

Seles had a loss to all of 15 year old Capriati, Sanchez Vicario, Sabatini, and a 36 year old Navratilova in 92. A loss to all of those I mentioned and another near loss to all but Capriati, who she only played twice that year, too. Henin far better than all those players I just mentioned.

In her whole career Henin never acknowledged an opponents good play in any way and on top of that it was clear she tried to and did cheat at multiple Grand Slams. She is the epitome of an unsportsman like player.
