Interesting. As a Canadian I don't think I have ever heard anyone say "he will be busy" after "lucas hasn't come today". Maybe "he was busy" or "he is busy" but never "he will be busy".

From the east coast of the US... we'd most likely say "He was probably busy" or "he must have been busy." But, perhaps, having British friends, I'm more tuned in to understanding that other structure? I think that the continental style of both languages (English and Spanish) is influenced deeply by the countries in place and how it's spoken... as in, I'm guessing, Mexican Spanish will reflect grammatical structures more in tune with American English than UK English; likewise, structural similarities between Castillian Spanish and UK English? It makes me wonder.

Como hablante nativo del español, creo que la 12 suena muy raro, lucas no ha venido hoy suena como si estuviera en pasado, por eso creo que podria ser: Lucas no ha venido hoy. (El) estaba o estuvo (si es pasado) o esta (presente) ocupado. Sino puede ser tambien: Lucas no vendra hoy. (El) estara ocupado.

Cynthia, I have to remark on the fact that your questions in these small tests are so very good -- of such high quality! They are helpful, useful, and intelligently formed. I can't tell you how often the questions in books and other resources ask the most profoundly unhelpful, or boring, aka unconnected to reality, or downright retarded questions, which is a real show stopper for me. Maybe this is an example of these materials “teaching down” instead of up? So often, I feel as if those questions are actually “rigged” to make the student pay more attention to what "they" want her to answer than to test her actual knowledge. You really seem to drill down into where the "cracks" in our (second) language learning will show up. I mean, it’s just uncanny. I think your own trials with English have given you a great insight to where we will struggle; Gordon has to be thankful that he is also such a good teacher, or he would sit in despair while you stole the show, LOL! I continue to be impressed by all the little nuances in your presentations to those of us who speak English natively. Our lengua materna is a real "humdinger" and you are so good at it, that it’s easy to see how much your attention to detail translates to actually helpful lessons. I am so tickled that I've found you both, teaching here on LightSpeed Spanish -- I would so love to return to Spain (been twice) and take an immersion course with you all, but with all the rot going on these days with carrying proof and papers and such, travel is just a dream for now. BTW, as a person from North America, I did slow down and really parse #8, but I focused quickly in on the first part of the sentence being a possibility that triggered another possibility of a different type [would have] and got that one right. What really made me proud of myself is that I figured it out just the way Gordon described it and you affirmed. So, thankfully, my learning has grown roots deeper than I had thought. Whew... of the three that I missed or simply had doubts about, it really showed me EXACTLY where and how to focus even more sharply. Wow!

Just a quick query, I'm interested in teaching English in Spain, I'm pretty fluent in Spanish but anyway here in France where I teach, I excusively teach in English. I can obviously explain in Spanish but I know myself that my method of not using another language than the one taught helps a lot. I teach all levels in Business Schools, Unis and am a native speaker of both English and French. BTW, excellent test, I found it relatively easy. I'm raving mad but I'm trying to attain a C2 level. I don't mean to toot my own hoot, but the only difficulty I have is using certain advanced sayings, however I do understand them. The issue I also have is my poor spelling but that also comes from the fact that my handwriting is atrocious, I even struggle in English, I have a mild form of dyslexia.

I didn't fully understand the reasoning for "La pregunta esta mal formulada" because when we say "estoy bien", "bien" is an adverb describing our temporary state of being (hence the verb "estar"), but in that example "mal" is an adverb describing "formulada", so part of an adjective clause describing the permanent state of "la pregunta", so I thought it should be "es" instead of "esta".

Suppose we change “la mayoría de las personas” to “una de las personas”. Definitely singular. Or if we write “un grupo de personas” this is also singular as we are only talking about one group of people. Also the rule for these constructions is to look at the noun before “de” (for example when we make plurals from phrases like “un vaso de agua”). So even though it is common usage to look to “las personas” for the plural, it is still wrong. Interesting question!

Hola de nuevo. Entonces, necesitas sacarte un diploma de español, un B1-B2 (no es súper difícil) y supongo que tendrás que convalidar tu título de medicina.

Hmmm number 9- couldn't it also be: ¿por muy lejos que sea, siempre estaremos juntos? However far we could think of being, we always remain together. Muchas gracias.
@LightSpeedSpanishChannel

It could be, since it's subjunctive, but option C makes much more sense. A: However far it may be, we will always be together. C: However far I may be, we will always be together. Cx

Prefieran is the present Subjunctive, therefore, we would need a trigger for it. If it were in Indicative (Prefieren), then, yes, that would be a possibility. I hope that helps, Becky. Cx

"mal formulado" - personally I would say 'that question is unclear' in English or 'that question is badly formed' or even 'that question is poorly posed' (especially in a mathematical/puzzle/quiz setting)... "made" sounds a little strang to me. Also the 'estoy' for jobs kind of shows the importance of cultural factors in language... I had an Italian colleague who moved here to Barcelona who lost his girlfriend because she wanted to continue to work in London in a fancy restaurant there and there were no proper qualified jobs in Spain. This seemed to be because in the UK working in hospitality is a professional and certified job in many places. In Spain and other Mediterranean countries like Italy waiteressing or hospital work in general is mainly casual work hence the 'estoy' element. Also correct me if I am wrong but doesn't 'ser ocupado' have a totally different meaning? I thought it means the same as occupied in English, like when an army occupies an area, or a house has squatters or a person is ocupying a public position.

'Está ocupado': si usas esta frase es que sabes que está ocupado. 'Estará ocupado': si usas esta frase es que piensas que la causa de que no haya venido sea, quizás, porque esté ocupado. :)

I feel like some of the questions are too vague, like "he will be busy" also works as "he's a busy person" when you think about it And like for me, I wouldn't say "Lucas hasn't came yet, he will be busy," not something I would say 7/12, I've done better, idk felt like it could've been more specific but good test on grammar

Tengo una pregunta. Numero 2, "Esta pregunta... mal formulada." El verbo en esa frase se refiere a "formulada" y no a "mal" porque la pregunta no se siente mal. Además la pregunta ya no se puede cambiar más. Entonces yo usaría "es" en este caso. ¿Tiene lógica?
