Exact crate motor and SCJ combo I ran in my fiberglass 34 ford roadster altered. I don't remember the cam I used but it was from Isky. I was hunting for 9.90's when I built it but was very surprised with easy 9.20's

I was around the shop near Atlanta that Kasse was working in back in 1992 when he and Allan Root, whom cast the first set of Cobra jet heads, did the testing of those heads on a Ford 460 crate marine motor. They were worth 100 hp on the first runs with all the low performance stuff on the boat motor. After changing cams and intake like you have done that engine went from 360 hp stock to over 700 hp at the end. Those early heads were great by any measure, they provided the Ford guys a viable cylinder head that would be an easy upgrade and not cost too much. The factory Ford heads were a disaster due to the abrupt turn down the exhaust port had to make because all the older cars had shock towers that intruded into the engine compartment and a normal port would not clear. Kasse sought to straighten out this port problem by moving everything around and he did an admirable job. All the later heads, Super Cobra Jet and P 51's were refinements of that first head. Kasse is a perfectionist and a constant thinker. He is always thinking about ways to improve what exists. He did the same with his Boss 9 heads and intakes for the Boss engine. He is a master in his field and a nice person to boot. Your test shows just how good the first head was as power kept improving as you installed more cam. If the head was a restriction then the gains would have tapered off sooner. It was major step forward for the Ford engine builders. This was a great test that you did here.

WOOOOO more big block Ford love! Hopefully everyone will start waking up to how downright affordable raw horsepower is from these giants! Basically the same size & weight as a BBC, but more cubes, and with killer cylinder head options from Kaase, Blue Thunder, Trick Flow(can NEVER go wrong with a set of A460s...), AFR... dollar for dollar, might be hard to beat for NA power, all you need is off the shelf parts, 4.5" cranks can drop right in without any grinding even. And, of course, we know what more NA power means - that much more power with boost or nitrous!
@MrAPCProductions4 жыл бұрын
Ported A460 trickflows will put down almost a full 150cfm more than the SCJ shown. The Eliminator RCV heads 580cfm at .700 and 645 @ 1.0. The Ford A460 iron block or the Eliminator block, 598 rotating assembly and that 292 cam Richard had. Put the A460 on it and get a really good intake, itll make 900 to the tire. With the RCV head there are 632s that make over 1400 on E85.

Jon wrote about the early heads he made and used them on the first engine he did. He bought a new 2008 ( I believe ) Mustang GT and removed the drivetrain. He installed the Boss with the original transmission and used it as a test mule. He would drive it back and forth from his home all the way out to the shop in Winder, about a 2 hour drive. The engine was tested with a couple of different cams and I think it made in the area of mid to high 800's. He had to dial the cam down a bit to make it more streetable but it still made 800 HP. He used to have all the pictures and other details on his web site and might still. It's a great article and goes into detail what they had to do to get the engine to fit well in the car. He finally sold the car to someone that wanted that special car. He would always remark that the car was always headed for a ditch because it had too much power. He makes the current Boss heads able to fit a normal 460 block and use regular head gaskets, not the Cooper rings that the original used. It's easy to make a Boss now, as long as your money holds out. The cylinder heads have tremendous power potential and need a large cubic inch short block to show their real stuff.

Well someone eventually bought it and brought it to my friends shop then bought a 514 crate motor for it because the 460 had an oil pressure problem. Clearly the 460 was installed with the trans attached and possibly on a lift with the k member out from the bottom but we didn't change it that way. The water pump almost touched the rad and it used a pusher fan because it was all that fit. A few access holes in the fire wall and some gentle persuasion and the engines was swapped. Apparently the car only ran 13 seconds and couldn't keep the big tires from spinning. But I'm sure it made an impression anywhere it went so long as it didn't over heat.

@@Parents_of_Twins Between the Cleveland headed Boss 302 & Boss 351, the 385-family(429/460), and the CJ/SCJ, Ford really came on strong right at the end of the muscle car era. I think, as a result, a lot of the most notable Fords(outside of the exceptions like the Thunderbolts & Boss 429s) have been overlooked as GM stuff and especially Mopars have risen in popularity. The reality is that they ALL put out some killer stuff back then though; even those AMC guys! BTW, it seems like Javelins have begun to get a little more attention these days too. With that said, I think today is the REAL golden age for gearheads though - whether brand new cars like the absurd 760HP dual clutch sequential GT500, or even building old school stuff with off the shelf heads & intakes for brands like Pontiac, AMC, Olds, etc., you really can build just about anything without needing to jump through too many hoops.

The heads did not have the rockers when I got them and the dealers could not even tell me what went on them. They sold me 'rail rockers', a huge mistake. And talking about the other guy Engine, what about AMC, what about the a AMC 360 very common and popular engine, these engines came with very good characteristics like larger diameter cylinders, large cylinder head valves 2020" int/ 1.680exh, share the same Rocker arm dimensions as FORD so there is some playing to do with rocker ratios, boring the cylinders out too 4.100" and using Chevy pistons in them, whey came with bigger diameter bolts on the main caps than FORD and CHEVY, they are quite expensive on aftermarket parts because they are less mass produce as FORD and GM but still after fixing there Oiling problems, they are pretty decent engines, I like to see Mechanical roller camshaft test on them, if I remember right GM .904" lifters work on them not 100% sure if height is a problem, there are plenty camshaft options in the market, unfortunately not so much intakes, Edelbrock makes cylinder heads for them but I heard that a good porting job on the OEM's makes good power because they already have large valves. I had a AMC 360, I only had the money to put a RPM intake, a 600Cfm carb with 1" spacer, Comp Cams Steel full roller rockers, a shorty header with a X-pipe to try to help it a bit, Edelbrock camshaft kit with hydraulic lifters and springs, and a MSD ignition system, I cleaned a little the cylinder heads valve ports, obviously the engine woke-up a lot but never knew what was the HP/TQ gain, I believe it was no more than 235HP but it is something I was always curious of how much It really was making.

@richardholdener if you see this, PLEASE do a video on transmissions. i know you do videos on cams and boost and engines. but it'd be nice if you did a video of how these transmissions are able to handle your engines kind of torque.

How about a carb shootout cheap vs expensive 4 bbl all on the same setup , is it worth buying a $800 or a sub $300 or spend money elsewhere and rebuild a junkyard one. say 600-650cfm. In the low budget junkyard 350. and maybe anular boosters vs downleg?
