Its not necessarily what people steal, it's the feeling of violation that's hard to shake. Knowing someone out there came into your home and thought they were entitled to take what you have worked so hard for. I wanted to string those people up and gut them. Eventually that feeling goes away, but you always remember. Another great video. Thank you Morgans!

Melissa, just to tie in with what Pete Davis mentioned. Be careful with the gloves as well. If your gloves are loose, you lose your dexterity and may not "feel" what or where your hands are and might get caught or pinched. My father had his thumb pulled off when his log splitter was retracting while wearing "thick" insulated gloves. A tight fitting glove that is durable is hard to find but can be worth it. I don't wear gloves unless it is extremely cold. I worked in a saw mill when I was 16. I started wearing the brown cotton work gloves. Those didn't last long. I had no dexterity or sense of "feel". Not only did they wear out quickly, but I found my fingers being pinched under boards and being caught on splinters and ending up in places that were more dangerous than if I was bare handed. Hope this helps.

Mike and Melissa in relation to home security and the effect it has if someone has break in. I am a retired Police Officer and have seen the aftermath on persons or families many times. It amounts almost to a personal assault on their body. It was hard to console them especially the females, some of whom found it hard to return to their home. Congratulations picking up on this subject.

I am sure you will love your new alarm, one tip for you with my system if I want to use the Home feature when I leave so the dogs will not set off the motion detector I leave the door open that I’m going out of, set the alarm, go out the door and when I close the door it will activate the alarm or you can pay the higher service at $25 a month and you’ll get an app with that service and you can set the home feature once your outside. We were broken into once he came through the nursery window, I heard them breaking the lock through the baby monitor my wife took the baby into the other room and called the police and I met them at the window with my little friend Smith and his friend Wesson and 357 of their friends.

We have had SimpliSafe for 5 years. Did you get the Panic button? Nice feature to have by the headboard of your bed. If you choose the monitoring you will find another great feature. If any sensor is triggered, the alarm goes off and you get a call to your cell phone. If no answer, they try the second/backup phone on file. If still no answer, they call the local LEO. I've never had a response from them take more than a minute. A friend of mine tripped the alarm and he couldn't enter the passcode within 60 sec. A deputy pulled into the driveway within 5 min. Great system, great service, great protection.

Another interesting video Mike and Melissa. Melissa you picked up the operation of the splitter in no time, well done. I had a thought about the levers, if you painted the knob of each lever a different colour it would be easier to recall which one does what. That looks like a pretty slick alarm system. I was robbed in 1984 when I was renting a house with my mate. We didn't have much money and consequently not much stuff but they took everything we had including the food we had in the cupboards, the worst thing that the mongrels did was defecate on the lounge room floor and spread it around the walls. We then had the awful task to clean it up. Police came but didn't do much other than gave us a case number for our insurance claim. My mates brother said be careful because they might try again after you have replaced your things. About 6 weeks later we came home earlier from work than usual and saw a car in the driveway and saw two guys prying the back bedroom window open, the same way we were first robbed. Our first reaction was to go into the house a beat the living daylight out of them but as there was a phone box outside our house so we rang 000 for the police and was told that we have a few things going on and we will get there as soon as we can, that just made me cranky and without thinking I called back and said don't bother coming I'll just shoot them, well we had three police cars and the area commander there in about 4 minutes. They caught them in the act and arrested them. The police commander gave us a gobful threatening all sorts of charges he wanted to give us and I said you just treated the thiefs like royalty and because I outsmarted your priority system your carrying on like this, he finally settled down and nothing happened to us. Later we did attend the court case and they were setenced to two years prison. Never been robbed since.

Nobody has broken into our home. At our old house (which was more in town), somebody scoped it out (cut a window screen, had a go at our door) but didn’t get in. I've got a Simpli Safe system and it works well. But, a few thoughts based on experience. Batteries - I use rechargeable batteries, I recommend using the best battery you can buy and keep enough extras on hand where you can just swap them out. They do last a while, but when the batteries die a signal goes to the alarm company and they will call you. When the alarm company calls you have to give them your security word--don't forget it, they don't give you any slack. If you don't know, either the police will call or an officer will visit to verify you are allowed to be there. Keep extra double-sided tape, like the ones they include, as some of mine will not stay stuck, will fall off after a time and I have to reapply them. Most of the ones I have trouble with are the aluminum patio doors. For the lower monthly fee you don't get to use their app to customize your system and they don't tell you this before the sale. So you have to call customer support to change anything on you system. They may want the serial number on the device you are having trouble with or want to change it's settings, so if that's the case then have the pertinent numbers before you call. Customer support can be trying. I've been on hold for extended periods of time and have felt rushed, probably due to the high volume of calls. Good luck with your system. I also have a Ring doorbell and they have expanded their product line to the point it looks the same functionally as the Simpli Safe. Ring is a cheaper price for the same product, cheaper for better video logging and home monitoring service and has a lot better customer support. My Simpli Safe doesn't bother me to the point i would get rid of it, but my next system will be a Ring. Hope this helps. Tell Hunter I said, "Hi."

Got broken into when I lived in the UK in the Navy. I walked in the door from watching “Seven” at the theater (if that gives you any idea how long ago that was) and saw muddy footprints through the apartment. Horrible feeling. Complete feeling of vulnerability, violation and invasion of privacy. They stole all my hats (weird), a NTSC camcorder, and a small US voltage stereo. Not a good haul for them as none of it aside from the hats, of course, could be used without voltage adapters. I didn’t have a whole lot worth stealing as an E-3 in the Navy. The police ended up catching them and we got the stereo speakers back. I’d have preferred to have the STP hat I’d gotten on a trip to Texas but at least they were caught. Oddly enough, the police thought for sure they would come back for my guitar and amp- so much so that they had a officer sit in my spare room for a week when I wasn’t home but they never came back.

My woodworking shop was broken into overnight in 2004. We slept right through it but our beagle didn’t. The next morning, the door was open. I looked inside and didn’t see anything amiss. So, I locked it and went to work. That evening, I walked into the shop and saw a pile of extension cords near the door. Further inspection showed that all the power cords had been cut from my equipment. And an old fruit basket full of copper wire odds and ends was missing. My neighbor, he’s a deputy sheriff, filed a report. He is the one who said the cords by the open door were likely a result of beaglus interruptis. He also told me that there were several other reports in the county with the same MO. When they caught them (two brothers), they found my basket. I still have it and use it for the same purpose. The beagle... she was our favorite pet and never got tired of having her ears scratched. We miss her.

You lock into their platform, and get what you get. Same with ADT. We went Honeywell, with independent monitoring company. With any alarm system people must keep two things in mind. 1, Any alarm system is just a detection system it is not a defense system, so once you are made aware of an intrusion, What do you do next if you are at home? 2, Home alarm activations are the lowest priority calls for police and Sherrif department responses when the home owner is not present. Just remember alarm systems do not keep you safe, they just make you aware if an intrusion has occurred and can provide video evidence of the crime being committed. I do not want to be a downer but as important as they are to home security, they are what they, are which is simply a warning and monitoring system. I think everyone should have one but tempered with realistic expectations of what they acutely do for you as a home owner.
@Snarkapotamus5 жыл бұрын
Yep. Most police departments are so used to false alarms that they tend to downplay them when they're received. Especially from the repeat offenders. A case of crying wolf one too many times. And while a gun may make you feel all warm and fuzzy, a couple of trained dogs and fake cameras with a blinking red light will probably be more effective and keeping the miscreants at bay.

In order of priorities of dispatch they will respond to the most life threatening calls first and then get to the home alarm activations and as I stated originally when a homeowner is not at the residence which makes it a potential burglary call. When a home alarm notification from an alarm monitoring company comes into a department it will be placed in order of priority for the officers working that area and will take a back seat to say a 911 call of an armed intruder or home invasion. If you live in a rural area with limited police resources it could be a relatively long time for an officer to arrive to investigate a home alarm activation. Unless the home owner is present and calls 911 or tells the alarm company somebody is in the house when they call the home owner after an activation the officer is probably not going code 3 to the address the second they get the call. In rural areas most criminals know they have at least 15-20+ minutes to smash and grab before the police arrive based on priorities of calls and limited police presence. I was not implying that the police feel it is a low priority just that life threatening calls take priority. Life over property will always establish how a call is prioritized when limited resources are an issue which they most always are. Again alarms are great but take them for what they are, an active MONITORING system, they are not a keep you safe system. Your immediate personal safety responsibility is on you not the alarm or the police. Last point, How does an Alarm actually keep you Safe from personal harm other than making you aware of a break in and monitoring it? It is part of a security plan but it shouldn't be your only security plan. Just my opinion.

What is the range of the sensors? When you finally construct the sawmill building, will a sensor be able to reach the house?

I had my garage broken into not long ago. They took 4 chainsaws, backpack blower, pneumatic nailer, logging chain and tore up my door to get into the garage. It’s a terrible experience. I now have cameras surrounding my house, some visible some hidden. I was watching Buckin’ Billy Ray when you checked in from the tractor. Take care

I think I remember that story, I think you may have mentioned it before. That stinks, especially tools. What you use to work with really ticks me off

As a police officer for 20 years I responded to many homes that had been broken into. A good, monitored alarm system can make all the difference!

How about a dog? Some people a dog is a big deterrent to keep thieves away. What’s your opinion?

Donald Mack I think dogs can be a good deterrent but can be distracted with food and I’ve seen some poisoned and or killed by intruders

Hi Mike and Melissa, We had a German Shepherd that would let you in the house, but would not let you leave. Pity the poor soul who would try to leave without being escorted out. Always had to put him in the fenced compound whenever we had guests.

Now that you have installed the Simply Safe alarm system, after it is armed, what does it do in the middle of the night when someone tries to get in? Does it warn you? Does it call the police? Both? Very curious. The only alarm system we have is 3 dogs. If they get past them, then they have to deal with my 2 best friends. Smith and Wesson. LOL. LOVE your channel. please keep the videos coming!

Must be an older video . Saw mill is coming this week . That was funny . Looks like Melissa is really happy about learning how to run the splitter. I'll bet she'll be looking forward in splitting many rounds to make Wood Stack 2019 a success . I'll have to check out SimpliSafe and see what the deal is . Thanks Melissa and Mike .

A contractor working for me mentioned that at another job site in town, someone had robbed them of two 20' tall palm trees ($$$) The NRA says to never mention that you'd happily plug someone invading your property, because in some rare cases lawyers have used that to indicate premeditation. Best safe out there. Hi to Hunter. Speaking of which, how would he deal with a stranger in the house. Scary to think. Sad how the few troublemakers can ruin it for the rest of us.

Hello lawyers, I'd happily plug someone invading my property. I have more to say but I won't. This country is going down the shithole. Jobs in China, democratic muslim politicians, Democrats, and on. Don't get me started.

An alarm system is a very good deterrent as are cameras. Keep in mind that's just what they are, a deterrent. They are not really "safety" devices in my opinion. I would also caution people about using stuff that goes out over the internet. MAKE SURE that you read all instructions carefully and understand the setup and configuration. I did a study not too long ago and was shocked as far as how many devices including security cameras and alarm systems were easily found on the internet. The shocking and disturbing part was the fact that there were so many devices with the default username and password still enabled. IF I was a criminal or a hacker I could disable the devices, change settings, use them for other "not-so-good" things, etc. I guess my point is that yes a system like you reviewed might be "easy" and "convenient" for the average homeowner to setup and get operational. It also might be less expensive and meet the homeowner's needs. However, when it comes to security I would rather pay a little more and hire a professional to do things a bit more securely and hopefully have a system that might be a bit more reliable, even if it means that they have to drill a few holes and spend some time installing the system. Put it this way. Would I trust my life to safety equipment manufactured by a reputable company such as Stihl or buy the more "convenient" and lesser expensive "Chinese made" "safety" equipment sold by another company?

I live in the house my parents built in 1954. It adjoins 54 acres of mature hardwood forest of a major city park. every home on my street that adjoins the woods has been broken into several times. I keep a loaded M1911 & AR-15 (with mounted bayonet) @ the ready 24/7 My alarm is a four year old 100 pound WHITE German Shepherd. Her name is Sieben (pronounced Zee-bin) German for seven, as she is the 7th dog in my life-time (so far)

How does it communicate with monitoring office? Cell phone? Do you have to install phone number SIM chip? What is cost of communication monthly? Does monitoring folks call police?

We use the Ring Video Doorbell system. Ring works great and stores all video or motion detection. Gets the bad guys before they get close to the house.
