First Drive in Crusty - Oval VW Beetle Rescue

A paste made from Bar Keepers Friend and water, wiped on to surface rust will bring out the color without scrubbing off any of the paint. It takes several applications, keeping it moist, so the oxalic acid can dissolve the rust with as little scrubbing as possible since it is also abrasive. It really brings out chrome without the fine scratches from abrasives. Your video inspires me to fire up my abominable 1956 Entomology Beetle that has been Pasture-izing since 1997.

My family had 2 Beetles when I was a kid. I took my drivers test in a 68. When I went away to college in 72 a guy in my dorm overhauled his VW motor in his dorm room. Did a good job: put the motor back in the car and it ran like a sewing machine.

I just bought a 70 beetle. Absolute POS. Big fire, supplied by a whole tank of gas and an up front electric fuel pump. Melted the carb into the intake. Fire was put out with gallons of water. Then It sat for 9 years with a gallon of water under the 3 quarts of oil. I pulled the engine, emptied it out, pulled the valve train, and spark plugs and submerged it in my blue tote full of vinegar, and rocks to displace the liquid. A month later it came loose. It’s in the car running now.

@@5150mxVW Yeah, you don’t know till you try it. Remember your engine didn’t have a gallon of water in it either. I think the saving grace of mine was the oil that was in it, was floating on the water bathing the innards. I saw Musti one time bump the starter on the flywheel (more leverage) and break an engine loose also. Wonderful car, wonderful attitude. Thank you sir for all you do.

Nice video! When I saw the tractor with the Beetle engine in your video, it struck me again that the German fire brigade here had an incredible number of Beetle engines in a carrying frame as a power generator or as a fire-fighting water pump. VW's just seem to fall into your lap. Never forget my 25,000 miles behind the wheel of my 64 here in NZ. Towbar replaced the rear bumper. Always check the distributor wire isn't worn thru where it crosses over the points spring. Saves on crash starts!

In the late eighties I cut my dads 69 squarback station wagon into a truck and made it really nice. He won first place at almost every show he took it to, i smoothed all the edges and lines and painted it fire engine red and put all now black interior in it with two 15 inch speakers behind the front seats, i have been trying to find it for years. If you ever see it mag me please. I have pictures of it but can't post here

It's kinda unusual for a Bug engine to not turn just a little bit cause most were so reliable. Maybe it's got a spun baring overlap and that's why it's not wanting to turn. It could still be fixed and used again cause I use to know a guy that would never throw anything away for a Volkswagen Bug cause in his world wasn't anything on the road quite like em. I don't know what pistons he used but I remember him building a few of em that was pretty quick to ride around in and it didn't take much horsepower. 200hp was like 600hp in a bigger car like a Chevelle or Impala from the 60s...I always liked Chevy's and Volkswagens in the 70s lol...
